Landscape and Travel Photography in France - Loire Valley châteaux and basilica
As a stock travel and landscape photographer I'm often out discovering new places.
On Thursday 2nd February 2017 my photography took me to the being of the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site at Sully-sur-Loire which is famous for its beautiful chateau.
But the weather closes in before the end of the day forcing me inside the amazing basilica at Clery Saint André, resting place of King Louis XI.
You'll see some of the gear that I use in this vlog as well as some of the thinking behind the composition of the images taken throughout the day.

Saint Omer Is A French Connection Full Of History And Spectacular Food
Saint Omer is a French connection full of history and spectacular food
I am standing on top of a huge concrete dome. Out there somewhere, far beyond the rolling green fields of northern France, lies England.
And beneath my feet, beneath this 72 metres wide, five-and-a-half metres thick, 55,000 tonne armoured slab, is Hitler’s secret V2 rocket base.
La Coupole was built in 1944 with one objective... to pound Britain into submission with wave after wave of jet-propelled explosive rockets.
It could have changed the course of the war and the history of Europe.
But the British blew up the entrance to the launch site, the Allies landed on D-Day, and the war ended before Hitler’s manic plan could be put into action.
Today it is a fascinating historical and scientific museum and one of France’s biggest tourist attractions.
Discover what life was like under the German occupation, walk the chillingly cold 20 metre high tunnels where the V2 rockets were prepared for launch, then visit the planetarium for a 3D experience of how man’s dream of flying came true and how we went on to conquer space... ironically using the same technology and scientists who developed the killer V2s.
More than 17 million Brits visit France every year, but so many turn right at Calais for the Brittany beaches or motor on south with barely a sideways glance at Saint-Omer.
Yet this land of waterways, forests, history, art and, of course, great food and drink has so much to offer.
And there are so many links with Britain from ancient times to today.
Saint Omer
We are staying just outside the town of Saint-Omer – a 35-minute drive south of Calais – at Chateau Tilques where our friend Stephane Joly is manager.

SUMMARY
=======
Louis XI (3 July 1423 – 30 August 1483), called Louis the Prudent (French: le Prudent), was King of France from 1461 to 1483, the sixth from the House of Valois. He succeeded his father Charles VII.
Louis entered into open rebellion against his father in a short-lived revolt known as the Praguerie in 1440. The king forgave his rebellious vassals, including Louis, to whom he entrusted the management of the Dauphiné, then a province in southeastern France. Louis's ceaseless intrigues, however, led his father to banish him from court. From the Dauphiné, Louis led his own political establishment and married Charlotte of Savoy, daughter of Louis, Duke of Savoy, against the will of his father. Charles VII sent an army to compel his son to his will, but Louis fled to Burgundy, where he was hosted by Philip the Good, the Duke of Burgundy, Charles' greatest enemy.
When Charles VII died in 1461, Louis left the Burgundian court to take possession of his kingdom. His taste for intrigue and his intense diplomatic activity earned him the nicknames the Cunning (Middle French: le rusé) and the Universal Spider (Middle French: l'universelle aragne), as his enemies accused him of spinning webs of plots and conspiracies.
In 1472, the subsequent Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, took up arms against his rival Louis. However, Louis was able to isolate Charles from his English allies by signing the Treaty of Picquigny (1475) with Edward IV of England. The treaty formally ended the Hundred Years' War. With the death of Charles the Bold at the Battle of Nancy in 1477, the dynasty of the dukes of Burgundy died out. Louis took advantage of the situation to seize numerous Burgundian territories, including Burgundy proper and Picardy.
Without direct foreign threats, Louis was able to eliminate his rebellious vassals, expand royal power, and strengthen the economic development of his country. He died in 1483 and was succeeded by his son Charles VIII.

SUMMARY
=======
André Marie Chénier (30 October 1762 – 25 July 1794) was a French poet of Greek and Franco-Levantine origin, associated with the events of the French Revolution of which he was a victim. His sensual, emotive poetry marks him as one of the precursors of the Romantic movement. His career was brought to an abrupt end when he was guillotined for supposed crimes against the state, just three days before the end of the Reign of Terror. Chénier's life has been the subject of Umberto Giordano's opera Andrea Chénier and other works of art.

SUMMARY
=======
The Virginia Tech Shooting was a school shooting that occurred on April 16, 2007 at West Ambler Johnston Hall and Norris Hall at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, in Blacksburg, Virginia. Seung-Hui Cho, an undergraduate student at the university and a U.S. resident of South Korean origin, shot 49 people on campus with two semi-automatic pistols, killing 32 and wounding 17. Several other victims were injured jumping from windows to escape Cho. As police stormed Norris Hall to find and arrest Cho, he shot himself in the head with a pistol, and died instantly.:92:78The massacre is the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. At the time it was the deadliest mass shooting committed by a lone gunman in U.S. history, though it has since been surpassed by two shootings (one at an Orlando nightclub and the other at an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas).The attacks received international media coverage and drew widespread criticism of U.S. gun culture. It sparked intense debate about gun violence, gun laws, gaps in the U.S. system for treating mental health issues, the perpetrator's state of mind, the responsibility of college administrations, privacy laws, journalism ethics, and other issues. Television news organizations that aired portions of the killer's multimedia manifesto were criticized by victims' families, Virginia law enforcement officials, and the American Psychiatric Association.Cho had previously been diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder. During much of his middle school and high school years, he received therapy and special education support. After graduating from high school, Cho enrolled at Virginia Tech. Because of federal privacy laws, Virginia Tech was unaware of Cho's previous diagnosis or the accommodations he had been granted at school. In 2005, Cho was accused of stalking two female students. After an investigation, a Virginia special justice declared Cho mentally ill and ordered him to attend treatment; however, because he was not institutionalized, he was still allowed to purchase guns. The shooting prompted the state of Virginia to close legal loopholes that had previously allowed individuals adjudicated as mentally unsound to purchase handguns without detection by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). It also led to passage of the only major federal gun control measure in the U.S. since 1994. The law strengthening the NICS was signed by President George W. Bush on January 5, 2008.The Virginia Tech Review Panel, a state-appointed body assigned to review the incident, criticized Virginia Tech administrators for failing to take action that might have reduced the number of casualties. The panel's report also reviewed gun laws and pointed out gaps in mental health care as well as privacy laws that left Cho's deteriorating condition in college untreated.:78:2
