30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
This morning we drive into Nelson in New Zealand for a day of city touring. After doing a bit of shopping for our supplies at Torpedo7, we borrow some bikes from the Tasman Bay Backpackers and start exploring Nelson City.
First, we check out Trafalgar Square and the Jens Hansen – The Ringmaker jewellers where The One Ring from the Lord of the Rings was made. We get some movie insights by visiting Jen Hansen in Nelson. Then just across the road is The Bead Gallery, a cool and quirky bead shop in Nelson.
We cycle through Queen’s Gardens in Nelson City full of water features, bridges and gardens on our way to the Botanical Reserve. The Botanical Reserve has a number of bush walks including one that goes to the Centre of New Zealand.
The Centre of New Zealand has some awesome views of Nelson City and the surrounding hills. Then it’s back on our bikes and return to the Tasman Bay Backpackers.
So what do you think of Nelson City? Would you stay in Nelson City as part of your New Zealand trip?

Heaphy Track - New Zealand Great Walks Track - New Zealand's Information Network
This guide has been compiled by the New Zealand Information Network to introduce you to these crown jewels of our tramping track network. New Zealand's most popular tramping/trekking tracks and a river journey are collectively known as the Great Walks.
Enter a West Coast ecological wonderland called Kahurangi National Park by following one of New Zealand's best-loved tracks.
The 82 km Heaphy Track is renowned for the beauty and diversity of its landscapes. The 4 to 6 day tramp begins in the historic gold mining valley of the Aorere River. It then climbs steadily through beech forest and alpine herb fields, and crosses the vast red tussock grasslands of the Gouland Downs. At intervals, classic Kahurangi sculptured limestone outcrops appear. Beech trees laced with hanging mosses and lichens enclose dense fern grottos, to create a magical 'enchanted forest' scene. Finally as the track descends to the dramatic West Coast, pounding surf can be viewed through lush sub-tropical groves of nikau palms - an incredible contrast in both vegetation and topography.
Trampers normally choose to travel east to west, starting out from the Brown Hut at Aorere. This is 28 km from Collingwood in Golden Bay and 135 km from Nelson. Along the track there are 7 huts and 7 campsites for which you need to purchase a Great Walk pass. The Heaphy Hut is set above the river with views to the Tasman Sea. From this hut the final day is 5 hours walk down the coastline to the Kohaihai River, 16 km north of Karamea. Transport operators provide a shuttle service to the track start from Collingwood, Takaka, Motueka and Nelson. A Karamea taxi service and bus shuttle meets trampers at the track end.
The Heaphy Track is particularly fascinating if you have an interest in the natural world. The Kahurangi region has half of New Zealand's native plant species, including 80% of all alpine plants. Orchids grow on the forest floor. The Gouland Downs rocks are the oldest in New Zealand at 500 million years. Perry Saddle hut is possibly the best place to see kiwi in their native habitat.
This is truly a Great Walk in every sense. It provides a kaleidoscope of interest for the nature lover and is a truly magical experience.

Welcome To Nelson New Zealand
Welcome to Nelson, New Zealand from a boaters view point. Entering the stunning harbor from Tasman Bay you are greeted by NZ fur seals, gannets, seagulls and little blue penguins. The harbor hosts many yacht clubs that teach the kids how to sail, sea swimming events and of course fishing. As you proceed up the harbor you pass Port Nelson which is the biggest port in Australasia for fishing vessels as well as the hub for cargo ships up to 240 meters in length. Further north in the harbour you enter into the large marina area for both commercial and pleasure craft. Vessels up to 20 meters in length can be accommodated with ease but it pays to book in as it gets very busy over the summer months. The small boat ramp is a hive of activities as Nelson host more boats per capita than almost anywhere else in New Zealand. The commercial area around the marina is full of engineering firms that can fix or build almost anything you can think of with experts in most fields. There are small chandlery shops dotted amongst the water front restaurants that have stunning seafood dishes. The drive along Rocks Road waterfront is stunning where you will see yachting, paddle boarders, boating, kayaks on the water with land based activities including walking , running, fishing from the roadside to name a few. As you travel more South you come across Tahunanui Beach, one of the best swimming beaches in New Zealand. Nelson has some fantastic cycling tracks and more getting added each year. Add to all the above world class wineries, international renown glass blowing, ring making and Trout fishing you have just a little taste of what this stunning area has to offer. Watch the video and come for a visit, we would luv to have you here to share some of the best of Gods own country.
