Best Places to Visit in Uruguay
Bordered by Argentina and Brazil, the tiny country of Uruguay is often overlooked by those heading to its bigger neighbors. Uruguay is a country you cannot afford to skip from your Latin America itinerary. It has so much to offer, whether it’s surfing beaches, good wine, stunning scenery, delicious steaks and of course marijuana.
Cross its borders and the reward will be endless delights, from glamorous coastline to ranch-peppered interiors where wild lands, gaucho culture, and local folklore lives on. It was one of the first on the continent to allow gay marriages, legalise abortions in 2012 and established a welfare state in 1903.
And of course, the marijuana which it’s so famous for since December 2013, Uruguay legalised the cultivation, sale, and consumption of marijuana for recreational use.

Uruguay is emerging as one of South America’s favorite destinations. Its capital Montevideo has a warm, temperate climate, pleasant sea breezes and miles of boulevards.
From Montevideo’s Telecommunications Tower you can see the hill that gave the city its name.
Another tower, the Palacio Salvo looms high above the Plaza Independencia in the City Center. Under this square is the mausoleum for the country’s revolutionary hero José Artigas.
Nearby Plaza Matriz is the city’s oldest square and home to the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral, the focal point of Uruguay’s Old Town.
Soccer is big here and in 1930 Uruguay hosted and won the first-ever FIFA World Cup in the Estadio Centenario.
Another proud local tradition is “parrilla and the best way to try it is to buy cuts of meat in the Mercado del Puerto, and have those cooked for you on the spot.
The 19-mile long promenade, La Rambla leads to the city’s favorite playground: De Los Pocitos Beach.
To the west along the river is the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Colonia del Sacramento, with its landmark lighthouse, sleepy Plaza de Armas, historic Portón de Campo and atmospheric Street of Sighs.
To the east of Montevideo, if you follow the coast, is Piriápolis. This beach resort offers great views from its hilltop San Antonio Temple.
The next highlight on this road trip is the lighthouse of La Paloma on the Cabo de Santa María peninsula.
On your way to the lighthouse of Punta del Este, don’t miss eccentric Casapueblo, a wonderful hotel and art gallery designed by local artist Carlos Páez Vilaró in Punta Ballena.
Uruguay may be small, but its big heart and relaxing vibe create a lifetime of memories.

A small best of showing some neat clips we shot in Paraguay with our DJI Mavic Pro.
We mainly filmed in Dr. Juan Eulogio Estigarribia, at the Nativa Nautic Club in Juan Emilio O'Leary and at the Salto Suizo near the German Colonia Independencia.
We really wish we would have bought the drone earlier (we actually bought it towards the end of our stay in Paraguay) and that we would have visited more places with it.
It was our first time in Paraguay but definitely not the last time. We will come back - with more experience in flying and shooting videos with drones, more knowledge in film making and more time to see awesome places like the Chaco.

Travel Paraguay - San Bernardino to Altos 2
Driving up the hill from San Bernardino to Altos. Lake Ypacarai is in our rear view mirror. Alot of expats in Paraguay buy property in this area because it overlooks the lake.. Five years ago it was almost an empty hillside, now there are homes everywhere. Next time I will post the trip downhill towards San Bernardino.

San Bernardino
La ciudad fue fundada el 24 de agosto de 1881, después de la Guerra de la Triple Alianza, por inmigrantes alemanes, entre ellos el suizo alemán Santiago Schaerer, primer administrador de la colonia, siendo rebautizada como General Bernardino Caballero, en ese entonces presidente del Paraguay.
Es el Año 1880 y el presidente Don Cándido Bareiro recibe una carta de un Señor Santiago Otto Schaerer en la que se le pedía datos sobre las ventajas que el Paraguay ofrecía a los colonos.
Es Señor residía en un pueblito cerca de Hamburgo y manifestaba que varios amigos suyos deseaban emigrar a América y tal vez, Paraguay.
El Gobierno Paraguayo le respondió al Sr. Santiago Otto Schaerer, que cada familia compuesta de 2 o 3 personas, recibirían: un terreno, una yunta de bueyes, semillas necesarias para el cultivo, pasaje desde Buenos Aires hasta Asunción y 6 meses de manutención.
Transcurrieron varios meses y el Presidente Bareiro murió. Poco después de su muerte, nuestro amigo Santiago Otto Schaerer, vuelve a contactar con el Gobierno Paraguayo, avisando que 5 familias con un total de 17 personas estaban en camino.
El entonces Presidente Don Bernardino Caballero, mantuvo el compromiso contraído por Don Cándido, pero surgió un problema.Todo lo que se había previsto, eran propiedades muy cara y el Gobierno no aceptó adquirirlas.
Fue así que se llegó a lo que actualmente se conoce como la Ciudad Veraniega se San Bernardino.
