Cape May Attractions | Sunset Beach, Cape May Light House | World War I fleet SS Atlantus
#CapeMay #NJAttractions #SSAtlantus
Last winter(Feb 2018), We visited Atlantic City and Cape May and this was my very first visit to Cape May. I was excited even though I know winter is not right time to visit Cape May.
17th Feb 2018 - We took NJTransit bus from Atlantic City and reached around 8.30 PM. It was raining and We ordered brick oven Pizza from local shop.
Next morning was started with beutiful sunrise from hotel's(Colton Court Motor Inn) balcony at beach avenue and I couldn't resist myself from
flying my drone out there. after having drone and photo session in the morning, We went to local restaurant for breakfast (Ocean View Family
Restaurant).
As it was an offseason - the price of hotels were down (1 beach view room with 2 Queen beds - $135 for 2 days)
As we didn't drive - we took Uber to explore the attractions near by and our next destination was Cape May Light House which has rich history.
The Cape May Lighthouse is a lighthouse located in the U.S. state of New Jersey at the tip of Cape May.It was built in 1859 under the supervision of U.S. Army engineer William F. Raynolds, was automated in 1946, and continues operation to this day. There are 199 steps to the top of the
Lighthouse. The view from the top extends to Cape May City and Wildwood to the north, Cape May Point to the south, and, on a clear day, Cape
Henlopen, Delaware, to the west. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 12, 1973.
After spending couple of hours we headed to sunset beach which is famous for best beach for Sunset in New Jersey.
Sunset Beach is a beach located near Cape May Point, in Lower Township along the Delaware Bay.
It is a tourist attraction, in part due to its proximity to the SS Atlantus (locally known as the Concrete Ship) and the Cape May Lighthouse.
Other attractions include Cape May diamonds, clear quartz crystals that can be easily found along the beach's length, and summer fireworks.
The S. S. Atlantus is probably the most famous concrete ship. She was the second concrete ship constructed in the World War I Emergency Fleet.
The war had ended a month earlier, but the Atlantus was used to transport American troops back home from Europe and also to transport coal in New England.
In 1926, the Atlantus was purchased by Colonel Jesse Rosenfeld to be used as ferry dock in Cape May.
In March 1926, the groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the construction of the ferry dock. On June 8th, a storm hit and the ship broke free of her moorings and ran aground 150 feet off the coast of Sunset Beach.
Since then the Atlantus has become a tourist attraction seen by millions.
Later in the afternoon - we went to Wildwood to see the boardwalk and experience the rides. Unfortunately shops, eateries, rides, water parks were
closed. We came back to our hotel in the evening and roam around Washington mall stores before heading for dinner.
The day full of activities were ended with collecting souvenir from local stores.

Day Odyssey Series: Ride to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania
Hop in and buckle up-we're tripping out again!
On this one we head on out to a place many didn't know existed-Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon! And, in keeping with our off-the-beaten-path tradition we get there without interstates (OOPS-we used part of one!). I posted a little vid on this place a ways back-but have a look at this!
The first part of our route was featured in our Centralia ride of May 2014, so I go sparingly here. From Harrisburg/Camp Hill north-it's all new roads to our Odyssey Series! Got some great mountain views too-up and back!
The Canyon is contained within Leonard Harrison State Park, which offers hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. An interpretive center and gift shop are also featured (both in this vid). The Canyon itself was carved out by Pine Creek which flows along its floor.
And, in keeping with my railfan heritage, we'll see some railroad spots such as the former Conrail yard at Camp Hill (now NS infested), the station at Northumberland (subject of a previous posting) and the onetime Wellsboro Station (for the first time). A rail line also once ran through the Canyon.
We had rain during some parts of our ride, but it made for interesting lighting effects, especially on the return trip! We also pass the place we once saw two suns (vid posted) but only one this time. Sorry!
As usual-the ride back eventually became a night odyssey. But we took some great roads for the first time ever, even on return! My apologies for the somewhat lesser quality of the night scenes; I didn't think to check camera settings! But stick around for the cool closing sequence!
Filmed August 3 2014. A splendid time is guaranteed for all...
