The Brebu Architectural Complex
The medieval architectural complex of Brebu is one of the most important historical monuments in Prahova county, Romania. The complex consists of a princely manor house, bell tower, church and surrounding wall and dates from the second half the 17th century. Construction was begun during the reign of Voivode Matei Basarab (starting in 1650) and was finished by Constantin Brâncoveanu (from 1689).
The Brebu architectural complex is preserved in its original form, being one of the few Romanian medieval monuments that is significantly preserved. The monastery's chapel is similar to that of the Dealu Monastery, and has dimensions of 30 x 10 metres, constructed in a triconic formation, with a tower extending from the nave and a pair of smaller towers from the pre-nave. The walls of the church have a thickness of two metres, and are constructed from burnt bricks and stone. The exterior decoration is characteristic of Wallachian architecture at that time, being fairly devoid of ornaments. Some of the decorative elements resemble those of the late gothic period in Moldavia. The interior decoration dates from 1843, and was restored by Sava Henţia in 1901-1902.
The belfry is a massive 27-meter high construction made of brick, with four storeys. The Brebu bell tower one of the most impressive monuments of the 17th century in Wallachia. The historical complex of Brebu resembles the Brâncovenesc palaces, which had not only household facilities, but also military facilities. The surrounding wall provided with battlements served both for defense purposes and as a watching bridge.
Inside the Princely House, the Museum of History and Archaeology of Prahova county has organized an exhibition of feudal history and art. The exhibits include items that tell about the development of agriculture, crafts, and trade in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the economic flourishing of Wallachia during this period. Two of the exhibition halls are dedicated to the development of culture and printing, which took a particular upswing during the reigns of the two Voivodes, who were important supporters of book-printing activities.
