Judaculla Rock

Cullowhee is a census-designated place in Jackson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,228 as of the 2010 census. The community is the home of Western Carolina University, part of the UNC System. The Jackson County Airport is located just outside the CDP limits. The name of the town was long thought to mean Valley of the Lillies, but is actually derived from part of the Cherokee phrase joolth-cullah-wee, which translates as Judacullah's Place. Judacullah, a giant warrior and hunter who the Cherokee believe lived in the area, is an important figure in their religion and culture.

1. Judaculla Rock Cullowhee
Judaculla Rock is a curvilinear-shaped outcrop of soapstone with quarry scars and petroglyphs. It is located on a 0.85-acre rectangular-shaped property, owned by Jackson County, approximately 60 meters east of Caney Fork Creek, a major branch of the northwestward-trending Tuckasegee River, in the mountains of western North Carolina. The petroglyph boulder occurs within an artificially created bowl-shaped depression. Today this is covered with mowed grass and bordered on the west by a thicket of river cane . Slightly upslope and east of the boulder are a few smaller outcroppings of soapstone bedrock, at least two of which show definite scars left by quarrying for soapstone bowl manufacture.

High Falls Near Lake Glenville During a Scheduled Recreational Water Release

High Falls waterfall is on a schedule. Most of the time, the water is diverted around the falls by Glenville Dam to the powerhouse far downstream, making it not much more than a trickle. Several days a year, water released into West Fork of the Tuckasegee River - primarily for whitewater recreation, but the trail to the falls is open to all. Cashiers, North Carolina has its own Sliding Rock, just like Brevard. Cashiers Sliding Rock is a natural waterslide, created by the Chattooga River gliding over a 10-foot high rock face with a few large potholes. Cashiers Sliding Rock is a great place to bring the kids to play in the pool at the bottom of the sliding rock or take the exciting slide into the pool. Dad can bring his fishing pole and fish for some wild brown trout further downstream. This is forest service property, and no lifeguards are provided. If you pay attention and evaluate the area upon arrival, it should be a very safe experience. Directions: From the intersection of U.S.64 and 107 in Cashiers, North Carolina (the Crossroads), travel south on 107 for 1.7 miles to Whiteside Cove Road and turn right. Travel 2.7 miles where you will cross a small bridge and see a small parking area just past this bridge and to the right. There are a couple of trails that lead from two parking areas. You'll hear the rushing water once you get out of your car.
