RVing At Empty Winter Campgrounds | Kai Iwi Lakes, New Zealand
I move to a Department of Conservation campground which sounded amazing on the Campermate App, but also sounded busy and a little confusion on how to book a site. It's called the Kai Iwi Lakes and is north of Dargaville, New Zealand.
Turning up, it was empty. So quiet! Turns out there is usually a custodian staying at the Pinehills Campground, which also has showers. But if no one's there, you can park your RV anywhere and pay later. There were a few powered sites, but since I have a good solar power set-up, I went for the cheaper non-powered site. The custodian recommended parking the caravan at the top of a hill, which is somewhere I wouldn't have considered going, as I'd worry I'd get stuck in the mud or that it wasn't level enough, but apparently this is the most popular spot for RVs. I learn later that it's also close to the playground and public toilet, so if I went again, I'd go right to the end where it's more private.
The Kai Iwi Lakes are 3 lakes and to walk around the main one takes about 2 hours. You can also walk to the beach from the other campground and that takes 30min.... next time :)
In summer there can be up to 1300 people staying, but there were only the 3 of us while I was there. A definite advantage to winter caravanning.

When looking for things to do, activities and attractions in Dargaville region and the Kauri Coast region, this is one of the Must do activities.
Just south of Dargaville is one of Northland's best kept secrets ....Pouto Sand safari's.
A hair raising adventure with 'Jock' a charismatic joker with a sense of humour and a wealth of information on the area as he takes you for a hoon on his beach buggy along Pouto peninsula up and over huge mounded sand dunes with shifting sands, where the scenery changes regularly as the wind reshapes the dunes, see petrified kauri and relics from the past and stories along the way eventually arriving at New Zealand's oldest three storey lighthouse built in 1884.
Jock will tell you the history of the area and of its eerie past, it's offshore area is called the graveyard, because of the many ships that were wrecked on the sand bar as the sailing ships tried to enter the Kaipara harbour to pick up timber from the regions Kauri forests.
This region offers so much to see and do
