Marylebone Walking Tour - London History
One of my favourite walks in London is through Marylebone High Street. Join me for this lovely walking tour full of London History and story-telling.
Marylebone used to be called the Manor of Tyburn, after the Tyburn river which flowed nearby.
Henry Viii had bought this whole manor of Tyburn and fenced off Regents Park as a deer Park.
King James I then sold off the southern part which ended up in the hands of the Cavendish family who married into the Earl of Oxford’s family.
Marylebone Road was then developed in 1756 to take pressure off Oxford street.
Because of the connotations of Tyburn tree where they used to hang people, they built a new church dedicated to St Mary.
St Mary Burne meant St Mary's church by the burne or river.
The new St Mary Church was built in 1810 and based on The Pantheon
Elizabeth Barret, the poet met Robert Browning a famous writer and fell in love and were married in secret in that church because her dad disapproved and disinherited her.
Nelson worshipped here and also Lord Byron was baptised here
Henry Higgins and Paul McCartney both lived in Wimpole Street.
Manchester Square is home to EMI House where the Please Please Me photo was taken and also the Wallace Collection which used to be Hertford House.
Then walk up Marylebone Lane, which was one of the original streets which was a country lane following the river Tyburn alongside.
It now runs underground.
In Wigmore Street is Debenham and Freebody which was a drapers in 18th century but couldn’t compete with Oxford Street.
Wigmore Hall originally had a Bechstein shop next-door and this was the Bechstein hall with best acoustics in London.
Beckstein had to leave because of the Trading with the Enemy act so it became Wigmore Hall where you can see concerts.
The Langham Hotel was built in the mid 19th century and had the first hydraulic life in the world.
*In 1889 the publisher Stoddart was looking for literary talent and came to London and invited Wilde and Doyle for dinner. It led to the writing of Dorian Grey and Sign of Four.

Walking around Glasgow - Argyle Street and Buchanan Street
An early morning walk along Argyle Street and Buchanan Street.
Starting outside Argyle Street station, we pass by Debenhams department store (formerly Lewis'), then past the junction with Queen Street, passing by the Argyle Arcade. At the junction with St Enoch Square, we turn right and head up Buchanan Street passing many of the Fraser's department store and many other well known high street stores.
Crossing over St Vincent Place, we pass the Apple store and Clydesdale Bank head office and then over West George Street, passing the Church of Scotland's Tron Church. Walking up the hill the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre and Royal Concert Hall are very prominent. We end at the junction with Sauchiehall Street.

Westfield London is a large shopping centre in Shepherd's Bush, London, England.
The centre opened to the public on 30th October 2008 and boasts a retail floor area of 150,000m² (1.615m ft²) [1]. Consequently, it is the third largest shopping centre in the UK behind MetroCentre and Bluewater and overtook Centrale in Croydon as the largest shopping centre in London. History of Oxford Street, London
A History of London video giving you a historic tour of Oxford Street (once known as Tyburn Road or Tyburnia). In this video we'll learn a little about Tyburn River, Tyburn Brook on Brook Street, the Tyburn Tree, the Tyburn gallows that can be found near Marble Arch, and we'll find out how the area changed its name from Tyburn Road to Oxford Road and eventually Oxford Street, thanks to the Harley family and the 1st Earl of Oxford. Places to see in ( Manchester - UK ) Market Street
Market Street is one of the principal retail streets in Manchester, England. It runs from its junction with Piccadilly and Mosley Street, close to Piccadilly Gardens, in the east to where it meets St. Mary's Gate at the crossroads with Exchange Street and New Cathedral Street in the west. St Mary's Gate then continues to where it meets Deansgate (A56). Other major streets crossed are High Street, Corporation Street (on the north side), Cross Street and Fountain Street (on the south side).
Market Street in Manchester, once known as Market Stead Lane, lies along the former route of the A6 road which goes from Luton, Bedfordshire, to Carlisle, Cumbria. The A6 arrives at Manchester city centre as London Road and formerly went north-west along Piccadilly, Market Street, St. Mary's Gate and Blackfriars Street and then over the River Irwell to Blackfriars Street, Salford. But since the pedestrianisation of Market Street the A6 disappears at the junction of Piccadilly and Oldham Street to reemerge in Salford as Chapel Street.
The entirety of modern Market Street is a pedestrian zone with motor vehicle access limited to the emergency services, maintenance workers and deliveries to the adjacent shops. The south-eastern end of the street also contains a Metrolink tram stop.
Starting in the east at Piccadilly/Mosley Street, the street shares its space equally between pedestrian walkways and two Metrolink tram lines. Standing on opposite sides of the tram lines loom the imposing edifices of two large department stores belonging to Debenhams (formerly Ryland's and Paulden's) to the north and Primark (formerly Lewis's department store, 1877-2001) to the south. Moving west, the street crosses Fountain Street and High Street where the tram lines turn away towards the north.
With the removal of the tram lines, Market Street becomes an entirely pedestrian zone bustling with shoppers. Dominating the entire north side of this section is the Manchester Arndale Centre, an indoor shopping complex. A large variety of shops of various sizes line the south side of the street.
Throughout the pedestrian zone there can often be found a large number of street traders and entertainers. Such entertainers have in the past included traditional buskers, bagpipes players and even string quartets.
Reaching the end of the Arndale Centre, the street crosses Corporation Street and Cross Street, ceasing to be a pedestrian zone and continues on to end where it meets St. Mary's Gate at the crossroads with Exchange Street and New Cathedral Street. This western section of Market Street is lined with the Marks & Spencer department store on its north side and another series of smaller shops to the south.

Stevenage is a town and borough in Hertfordshire, England. Stevenage is situated to the east of junctions 7 and 8 of the A1, and is between Letchworth Garden City to the north, and Welwyn Garden City to the south.
Stevenage is roughly 32.9 miles (50 km) north of central London. Two films were set in and around Stevenage, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush and Boston Kickout. Spy Game was partly filmed in Stevenage but set in Washington, D.C.. The 1959 film Serious Charge was also filmed in Stevenage.
A small community arts centre is located in the Roaring Meg Retail Park. The Boxfield and Foyer Gallery is situated in the Gordon Craig Theatre, which forms part of the large central Leisure Centre. Stevenage Museum is located under the St. Andrew and St. George's church on St George’s Way.
A distinctive feature of Stevenage is its urban landscape. It has many roundabouts, few traffic lights, a network of completely segregated cycleways, and some of the tallest street lights in Britain. Stevenage is served by the A1(M) motorway. The old Great North Road passes through the centre of the town, and the High Street in the Old Town has several pubs that were coaching inns on this road; it is mostly now classified as the B197. Stevenage is also served by the A602, connecting the town to Hitchin, Watton-at-Stone, Hertford and Ware.
Buses within and to outside the town are provided by several operators, the main within the town being Arriva The Shires. Other operators include Centrebus, Uno, and Cozy Travel. The town is served by Stevenage railway station on the East Coast Main Line, and has regular commuter services to London and Cambridge, as well as connections to the North and Scotland.
