Sri Lanka | Travel to Ella, Unawatuna, Mirissa & Dikwella
Traveling Sri Lanka was an absolute pleasure! Flying the drone in such beautiful landscape is unreal! We’ve visited different places, like Ella, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Kandy & Dikwella. Sri Lanka offers lots of diversity. Surfing at the southern coastline. Strolling over stunning beaches. Hiking in the inland highlands. Doing safari tours while seeing elephants and other wildlife. And taking one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Add to this the friendliness of the Sri Lankan people and the extremely cheap prices of transportation and you’ll conclude that Sri Lanka is a perfect place for traveling.
My friend and I landed in Colombo, the commercial capital city of Sri Lanka. Then we traveled down south by train to Hikkaduwa. The train drives directly next to the ocean which gives a beautiful sight while being on the move. After finding out that the surf in Hikkaduwa was not that great, we moved to Unawatuna a little bit more East. Unawatuna is a perfect spot if you like surfing and are beginner, it has some good en consistent waves coming in. The place also has some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches.
After enjoying some days of surfing and beaching in Unawatuna we continued our way to Mirissa further East. Although this is quite a nice place with some beautiful spots, we found it a little bit too touristy and decided to stay only one night in Mirissa and travel further East to Dikwella. This place is a little bit less touristy but has some very beautiful beaches too. We chilled a lot and also tried out our newly bought drone, the DJI Mavic Pro, which was a lot of fun. Sri Lanka is obviously a perfect place to fly a drone. Capturing those stunning spots from a different angle is just magnificent.
We then continued our journey to one of the many national parks that Sri Lanka has. Udawalawe national park is known about the elephant safari tours. It’s always a great experience to see such big and wild elephants up close. Udawalawe furthermore has not that much to offer so after a day of elephant spotting we took the local bus further up north and traveled to Ella.
Ella is just a wonderful place. This place in the highlands of Sri Lanka has some great hiking to offer. We walked up Little Adam’s Peak and played around with the drone on top of the hills, which was super fun! The famous Nine Arches Bridge is also situated in Ella. This iconic bridge has nine huge arches (obviously) and lays between two railway stations making sure that trains can go back and forth. Besides Little Adam’s Peak, you can also climb on the top of Ella Rock which is a little bit harder than Little Adam’s Peak, but definitely worthwhile.
For many Ella is also the destination from or point of departure to Kandy. The train ride between Ella and Kandy is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, passing by many tea farms and just breathtaking nature. After Kandy we traveled back down south to Unawatuna to do some more surfing before we unfortunately had to leave Sri Lanka. But we’re both sure that we will come back to this awesome county!

I have ranked the best beaches in the south of Sri Lanka to be 5.Tangalle 4.Bentota 3.Hikkaduwa 2.Unawatuna and 1.Marissa.
Like I say in the video although l am counting down to my favourite beach, my least favourite & favourite is only marginally apart.
I also mention Dalawella beach, jungle beach, whale watching & turtle rescues centre. Each of these beaches have something unique about them that make them all worth visiting.

Dickwella Sri Lanka Vlog | Temple + Perfect Beach (NOT Hiriketiya!)
When you're staying around Tangalle Beach, Matara, or anywhere in that general area on Sri Lanka's south coast, a perfect day will combine the beach, a bit of culture, and a killer sunset session. I was recently staying at the chilled, posh private villa Meda Gedara just on the outskirts of Dickwella and they have a guy who is from Dickwella itself and took me on an Insider's Tour! I explored hell with a devil king at Wewurukannala Vihara Buddhist temple, also known as Dickwella Temple. I had planned to spend a few hours at the famous Hiriketiya beach but that was like hell as you'll see, spilling over with tourists. And I ended up on the remote and fabulous Batheegama beach at a little spot with swings, situated in a way that the sunset is perfectly framed between the sea and palm trees.

INSIDER TIPS
1. At Dickwella Temple you'll learn the punishment for loads of crimes and gain a real history of the temple and the religion if you spent time with a lovely and informative guide. Mine made my visit to the temple memorable. The cost to enter is 200 Rupees and I gave the tour guide 200 for his time as well.
.2 Unless you want to learn to surf, ditch Hiriketiya Beach all together and head out to one of the gorgeous unspoilt beaches. Drinks weren't expensive but they weren't cheap either but the experience and the rugged beauty make it the right choice for an afternoon to remember.

I landed up in Sri Lanka pretty spontaneous and I fell in love immediately. Extremely beautiful beaches, nice people, wonderful nature and good food are only the few highlights of this small country.
