Touring Meteora, Greece Travel Video Transcript:
Well hello from Greece! Sam and I are currently visiting Meteora which means suspended in the sky. This is a place that is really well known for its monasteries built atop these rocks. And the landscape is usually out of this world but as you can see we are dealing with a bit of fog and rain today. So it is going to be a bit tricky. Um, we were planning to do a bit of hiking actually but I think that is not going to work out so we're going to settle for some monasteries and caves instead. So let's get ready and go.
Since the weather wasn't really cooperating we ended up hopping in a van and driving out to some different look out points around Meteora. Everywhere we turned we were greeted with sweeping views of the towns below, impressive monasteries seeming to defy gravity, and imposing rock towers that looked out of this world. The rain did eventually clear up and that's when we went back to our original plan for a hike around Meteora.
Okay guys, so we are finally hitting the trails. It's going to be a 10 kilometer hike. So far we've already been seeing ruined monasteries and the landscapes are amazing. So let's continue. We have to catch up with our group.
Behind me are some massive boulders which are really popular for rock climbing. We're not really into that so we're just doing a hike today. But if you're into rock climbing you've got to try it over here.
The hike was a really easy one and perfect for most fitness levels. Our guide lead us down dirt trails and we learned that there is a network of over 35 kilometers of foot paths in this area. Along the way he pointed out strange rock formations, various mushrooms growing in the forest, and the best part was hearing the tales behind each of the ruins we visited.
This is the place where you can taste the echo. Listen! Echo! Woo!
It's raining outside, we've got an abandoned monastery in the background and we're going to do our best echoes.
So we've been visiting a lot of different ruined or abandoned monasteries and this is one of them. Now there is a pretty interesting story behind this one. Apparently, monks used to live here and one day they were out who knows doing some gardening or whatever when a group of people came over and they just took over their home. They started squatting and they took control of the monastery for over 80 years. So the poor monks had to find somewhere else to live. Now today this one has been renovated but you can't actually visit it. So we're just admiring it from a distance. Pretty spectacular I'd say.
The rain clouds have returned and it is pouring right now. That is the end of our 10 kilometer hike.
Okay, so it is still raining but we are going to go visit the biggest monastery here in Meteora. It's called the Grand Meteoron. Low and behold. It's just over there. We've got our umbrellas. Let's go visit it.
Any tips on visiting here? Yes! I actually do have a tip. So prior to coming to Meteora I would have thought okay let's hop on a bus, we'll reach the monastery. Visit the monastery and that will be it. But if you do it that way you're missing out on so much more because the landscapes here are incredible. So I would recommend doing a hike. Kind of like what we did this morning because then you really get to admire the monastery, see them from a distance. You get to visit caves and also visit the abandoned ruins of former monasteries that are kind of hidden and you wouldn't normally be able to spot if you were on the main road. So something to consider. You can get a bit of exercise and really enjoy the landscapes.
It wasn't until our final morning in Meteora that the rain clouds finally cleared and we had blue skies over the valley. Though I have to say, we still loved it even in the rain, and that's the sign of a good visit!

Thessaloniki, Greek Macedonia, Greece - Greece's cultural capital
Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of Greek Macedonia, the administrative region of Central Macedonia and the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia and Thrace. Much of its center was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. Evidence of its Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout, and is a hub for international trade and culture.
Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for the rest of southeastern Europe; its commercial port is also of great importance for Greece and the southeastern European hinterland. The city is renowned for its festivals, events and vibrant cultural life in general, and is considered to be Greece's cultural capital. Events such as the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival are held annually, while the city also hosts the largest bi-annual meeting of the Greek diaspora. Thessaloniki was the 2014 European Youth Capital.
The city of Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon. An important metropolis by the Roman period, Thessaloniki was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire. It was conquered by the Ottomans in 1430, and passed from the Ottoman Empire to modern Greece on 8 November 1912.
Thessaloniki is home to numerous notable Byzantine monuments, including the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as several Roman, Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish structures. The city's main university, Aristotle University, is the largest in Greece and the Balkans.
Thessaloniki is a popular tourist destination in Greece. Among street photographers, the center of Thessaloniki is also considered the most popular destination for street photography in Greece.

MACEDONIA - Travel Guide | Around The World
The Republic of Macedonia, (Macedonian: Република Македониjа, Republika Makedonija) is a landlocked country in the Balkans. It is ordered by Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east, and Greece to the south.
While easily accessible from all points abroad, and boasting all the amenities of the Western world, the Republic of Macedonia remains one of Europe’s last undiscovered countries: a natural paradise of mountains, lakes and rivers, where life moves to a different rhythm, amidst the sprawling grandeur of rich historical ruins and idyllic villages that have remained practically unchanged for centuries. The majority population is ethnic Macedonian and Orthodox but there is also a significant Albanian Muslim minority. Therefore, one can expect a wonderful mix of architectural and ethnic heritage. The country represents the Balkans in the truest sense, consisting of a fascinating mix of Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences.
Macedonia is a country with many ethnic minorities. There is still some ethnic tension between Albanians (who form the majority in the northwest) and Macedonians, so this is a subject best avoided. It almost came to civil war a few years ago.
Macedonia is covered by mountainous territory marked by deep basins and valleys filled with fruity goodness. There are three large lakes, Ohrid lake, Prespa lake and Dojran lake, each divided by a frontier line, and the country bisected by the Vardar River.
Cities :
Skopje, the nation's capital. It is home to many historic landmarks and architectural monuments, and a great deal of cultural places of interest.
Ohrid, a lakeside resort and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered the jewel in Macedonia's crown.
Bitola, the second largest city. It is Macedonia's most European town. It has it all: an ancient city, Ottoman monuments, a lovely shopping promenade, great nightlife, and more.
Kruševo, a museum-city nestled high up in the mountains of southwestern Macedonia. It is one the most historically significant destinations in the country as it was the site of a revolt against the Ottoman Empire. The town is also home to great skiing.
Prilep, tobacco fields, medieval monasteries, and strange rocks.
Struga, small town on Lake Ohrid. It receives a fraction of the amount of tourists that nearby Ohrid gets, making Struga much more calm and peaceful.
Štip, a peaceful city in eastern Macedonia. The town has existed for thousands of years, which is evidenced by its many archaeological sites.
Kumanovo, the third largest city. The area boasts many churches, pre-modern settlements, and more.
Tetovo, majority of the population is ethnic Albanians. Home to the Painted Mosque and Monastery of Lešok.
Radoviš, a small city in southeastern Macedonia, famous for the new Holy Trinity Orthodox Church.
Strumica, a vibrant city in the warm, sunny southeast. Progressive Strumica is home to great shopping, nearby hiking, waterfalls and hot springs, and the legendary Strumica Carnival.
Other destinations :
Galičica National Park
Mavrovo National Park
Pelister National Park
Republic of Macedonia has two international airports, the main airport in the capital Skopje International Airport Skopje (SKP) and another in Ohrid St.Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD). There are around 150 flights in a week from different European cities to Skopje. Macedonian Government awarded one Turkish Airport Operator Company (TAV) a contract to construct a brand new Terminal building in Skopje Airport. Construction was completed in October 2011.
Macedonia is a small country but there are a lot of things to see in it. Its capital Skopje is the biggest city and upcoming European city, with the Vardar river running right trough it. It has a multitude of sights worth seeing: Kale fortress is kind of a city symbol. Right under it lays the beautiful Old Bazaar with many cafeterias and restaurants. Its main sights are St. Spas Church, Kurshumli An and many more. Over the famous Stone Bridge you can get to the main square Macedonia where you can see the 22-meter statue of the ancient Macedonian leader Alexander the Great, as well as the biggest shopping center in the city ГТЦ. Other interesting sights are the Memorial House of Mother Teresa and the Millennium Cross on the top of mountain Vodno, which is a 66-meter cross and it is the biggest cross ever built. It is reachable by the newly opened cablecar and by foot. It is possible to walk up and take the cablecar back down, paying the fare upon arrival.

World's Best Archaeology site Kokino | Macedonia
Kokino (Macedonian: Кокино) is a Bronze Age archaeological site in the Republic of Macedonia, approximately 30 km from the town of Kumanovo, and about 6 km from the Serbian border, in the Staro Nagoričane municipality. It is situated between about 1010 and 1030 m above sea level on the Tatićev Kamen (Татиќев камен) summit and covers an area of about 90 by 50 meters, overlooking the eponymous hamlet of Kokino.
It was discovered by archeologist Jovica Stankovski, director of the national museum in Kumanovo, in 2001. In 2002, Stankovski together with Gorje Cenev (who is the head of a planetarium at a Youth Cultural Center in Skopje) published the claim that the site contains a megalithic observatory and sacred site (мегалитска опсерваторија и светилиште).
The oldest archaeological finds date from about the 19th century BC, corresponding to the early European Bronze Age. It shows signs of occupation for the period from the 19th to the 7th centuries BC. Finds from the Middle Bronze Age (c. 16th to 14th centuries BC) are the most numerous (mainly ceramic vessels, stone-mills and a few molds). An agglomeration from the Iron Age was discovered in 2009.
The Kokino megalithic observatory should be distinguished from the wider Kokino archaeological site. While the observatory consists of two platforms of a combined area of about 5000 square meters, the site covers about 30 hectares. From this area, an abundant amount of fragments of ceramic vessels, dated to between the 19th and the 11th centuries BC. Also found was a mould for casting bronze axes, and a pendant. The remains of vessels filled with offerings were found deposited in cracks in the rocks, which gave rise to the interpretation of the site as a holy mountain.
The claimed archaeo-astronomical site itself consists of two platforms with an elevation difference of 19 m. The claim of the site representing an astronomical observatory was made by Stankovski and by Gjore Cenev in 2002. According to this interpretation, the site includes special stone markers used to track the movement of the Sun and Moon on the eastern horizon. The observatory used the method of stationary observation, marking positions of the Sun at the winter and summer solstice, as well as the equinox. Four stone seats or thrones are placed in a row on the lower platform. According to Cenev, A stone block with a marking on the upper platform marks the direction of sunrise on summer solstice when viewed from one of the seats.
Kokino was mentioned in a poster made by NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum in 2005.
The Cultural Heritage Protection Office of Macedonia's Ministry of Culture declared the site a property under temporary protection on 13 November 2008 (Decision nr. 08-1935/6). In 2009, Minister of Culture Elizabeta Kancheska-Milevska declared Kokino one of the priorities of the Ministry of Culture’s 2009 programme. In 2009, the Republic of Macedonia also suggested the site be inscribed on the World Heritage Site.
