2017 Iowa State Fair Parade
Iowa Public Television will provide LIVE coverage of the 2017 Iowa State Fair Parade. The parade begins Wednesday, August 9 at 6:15 p.m. in downtown Des Moines with IPTV’s coverage from 7:30-9 p.m.
The 2017 Iowa State Fair parade will also be live streamed on Iptv.org and Facebook. Join the conversation on social media using #IPTVFair2017.
The parade for the 2017 Iowa State Fair will feature more than 140 different floats, animals, vehicles and performing units. Leroy and Pat Perkins of Wayne County will serve as this year’s parade marshals. The Iowa State Fair Parade is the state's largest parade and sets the stage for the Iowa State Fair, open this year from August 10-20. IPTV’s live coverage marks first time the Iowa State Fair Parade will be broadcast statewide in 15 years.
The LIVE coverage of the parade kicks off IPTV’s Fair 2017 coverage. Extensive coverage of the Iowa State Fair will air nightly August 14-19 at 9 and 10:30 p.m. Bill Riley will return as host of this year’s coverage, which is full of feature contest results, unique stories, food, animals, music and more. IPTV will also broadcast coverage of the finals of the State Fair Talent Championship on Sunday, August 20, at 8 p.m.

1918 Tornado Aftermath, Boone, Arcadia, Iowa
On May 21st, 1918 a significant tornado outbreak occurred with at least 19 touching down in Iowa, including a particularly violent tornado that leveled farms on a path from near Denison through Carroll County to around Stanhope. As it passed through southeastern Webster County this storm nearly destroyed the small towns of Harcourt and Dayton and severely injured a number of children when their school wagon was struck. Another tornado touched down intermittently from near Berkley in Boone County to Wellsburg in Grundy County, killing 10 people and injuring nearly 100. A third storm struck areas around Newton and Kellogg killing several people and injuring dozens of others. In total approximately 19 people were killed and over 150 injured across Iowa.
Amana Colonies I Des Moines I IOWA I Music Robert Levy
The Amana Colonies are seven villages on 26,000 acres (11,000 ha) located in Iowa County in east-central Iowa, United States: Amana (or Main Amana), East Amana, High Amana, Middle Amana, South Amana, West Amana, and Homestead. The villages were built and settled by German Pietists, who were persecuted in their homeland by the German state government and the Lutheran Church. Calling themselves the True Inspiration Congregations (German: Wahre Inspiration's Gemeinden),[3] they first settled in New York near Buffalo in what is now the town of West Seneca. However, seeking more isolated surroundings, they moved to Iowa (near present-day Iowa City) in 1856. They lived a communal life until 1932.
For eighty years, the Amana Colony maintained an almost completely self-sufficient local economy, importing very little from the industrializing American economy. The Amanians were able to achieve this independence and lifestyle by adhering to the specialized crafting and farming occupations that they had brought with them from Europe. Craftsmen passed their skills and techniques on from one generation to the next. They used hand, horse, wind, and water power, and made their own furniture, clothes, and other goods. The community voted to form a for-profit organization during the Great Depression, the Amana Society, which included the Amana Corporation.
Today, the Seven Villages of Amana are a tourist attraction known for its restaurants and craft shops. The colony was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
