2. Lake KournasKournas Lake Kournas is a lake on the island of Crete, Greece, near the village of Kournas. It is in the Apokoronas municipality of Chania regional unit close to the border with Rethymno regional unit, 47 km from the town of Chania. Kournas is a fairly large village perched on a hill overlooking the lake. Crete's only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas, is relatively large, with a perimeter of 3.5 km. Although almost all touristic leaflets say that it is possible to walk around the lake, that is not true. At least not at the end of the rain season . There is a nature preserve on the Southwest of the lake. But there is a rustic road from the North of the lake to the Hills on the West of the lake too. The lake used to be called 'Korisia' after ancient 'Korion', a city thought to be in the area with a tem... From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
6. Samaria Gorge National ParkSfakia The Samariá Gorge is a National Park of Greece since 1962 on the island of Crete – a major tourist attraction of the island – and a World's Biosphere Reserve. The gorge is in southwest Crete in the regional unit of Chania. It was created by a small river running between the White Mountains and Mt. Volakias. There are a number of other gorges in the White Mountains. While some say that the gorge is 18 km long, this distance refers to the distance between the settlement of Omalos on the northern side of the plateau and the village of Agia Roumeli. In fact, the gorge is 16 km long, starting at an altitude of 1,250 m at the northern entrance, and ending at the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli. The walk through Samaria National Park is 13 km long, but one has to walk another three ... From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Ithaca by C.P.Cavafy (with Sean Connery & Vangelis)
C.P.Cavafy's poem 'Ithaca', recited by Sir Sean Connery and with music specially composed by Vangelis.
ITHACA [1910, 1911]
As you set out for Ithaca
hope that your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don't be afraid of them:
you'll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare sensasion
touches your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope that your journey is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors you're seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind-
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and learn again from those who know.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you're destined for.
But don't hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so that you're old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you've gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would have not set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaca won't have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you'll have understood by then what these Ithacas mean.

MediMoments 2009: Athens, Greece Acropolis museum 2
Jean and I went on a mini-adventure to this museum while the others went shopping at the Plaka. Our tour bus driver dropped us off near the museum and pointed in a direction of the museum. Athenians like to tell visitors that if you dig a hole anywhere in their city you find archaeological treasures. hat has certainly been true in the case of the construction of the New Acropolis Museum. Some believe that the site chosen, a densely built up area beside the Acropolis hill between the Plaka and Makrigianni districts, is where the city of Athens began.
No sooner had excavations begun than important finds began to surface. An ancient Christian village, a Roman site and a village contemporary with the Archaic finds from the Acropolis. To accommodate the archaeology of the site, the museum is supported by pilings (visible in the video), driven into the ground where they will do the least harm to walls, wells, chambers and streets that date back about 4,000 years. Approaching the main entrance of the New Acropolis Museum, visitors can look down into this well to see some of the ancient village. In the 1 hour we had before we needed to get back to our group, we quickly got to the museum, took pictures at the excavation entrance, no lines to get into the museum, walked through all 3 levels, to the coffee house inside where there was a great view of the Acropolis and took more pictures, shopped at the museum bookstore, then took the metro/subway (station right at the museum) to the plaka (the next stop) . Awesome 1 hr adventure for a total of 2 Euros. Thanks Jean for trusting me to get us back to the Plaka on the Metro, since it was the 1st time I went on the subway on my own.
