The Blockhaus d'Éperlecques is a Second World War bunker, now part of a museum, near Saint-Omer in the northern Pas-de-Calais département of France, and only some 14.4 kilometers north-northwest from the more developed La Coupole V-2 launch facility, in the same general area. The bunker, built by Nazi Germany under the codename Kraftwerk Nord West between March 1943 and July 1944, was originally intended to be a launching facility for the V-2 ballistic missile. It was designed to accommodate over 100 missiles at a time and to launch up to 36 daily. The facility would have incorporated a liquid oxygen factory and a bomb-proof train station to allow missiles and supplies to be delivered from production facilities in Germany. It was built by the forces of Nazi Germany between 1943 and 1944 to serve as a launch base for V-2 rockets directed against London and southern England, and is the earliest known precursor to modern underground missile silos still in existence. The cliffs of the cape are the closest point of France to England – 34 km from their English counterparts at Dover. Smothered in sea pinks and thrift, the cliffs are a perfect vantage point to see hundreds of ships, from oil tankers to little fishing trawlers, plying the waters below. On a clear day, the emblematic white cliffs of Dover on the English shore can be seen.

Last month we travelled to France on a road trip for a few days. We stayed in Le Touquet (my favourite place in Northern France) and visited Amiens, Abbeville and Montreuil-sur-mer. We didn't need to travel far from Calais for a quintessentially French holiday!

I feel quite lucky to live in the south east of England, which means travelling to France is quite easy and only an hour or so away! France is also a country I love to travel in, so I hope that comes through in my video.

Battery Oldenburg Calais

Large gun emplacements, just behind the old refugee camp near Calais. This was built in the early 1940`s to support the upcoming ` Operation Sea lion` The invasion of great Britain. And was part of the `Hellfire Corner` area. Very easily accessible if you decide to pay a visit.

La Coupole: Oorlogsmuseum en omgeving

In Pas-de-Calais, op 5 km van de stad Saint-Omer, staat LA COUPOLE: een gigantische ondergrondse bunker die de nazi's in 1943-1944 bouwden om er de V2-raketten op te slaan, klaar te maken en te lanceren. De V2 was het geheime wapen waarmee Hitler Londen wou vernietigen en het verloop van de oorlog wilde veranderen, en ook het eerste tuig dat de stratosfeer heeft bereikt.

Vandaag is LA COUPOLE omgebouwd tot Historisch Herdenkingscentrum. In een indrukwekkend kader kunt u er kennismaken met de belangen van een totale oorlog en de etappes van de verovering van de ruimte, paradoxaal genoeg het gevolg van de V2-technologie.

Daarnaast ontwikkelt het Centrum het thema van de Duitse bezetting van Nord-Pas-de-Calais van 1940 tot 1945, een van de zwaarst beproefde regio's tijdens de donkere jaren.

Talrijke audiovisuele documentaires behandelen de belangrijkste thema's van de Europese collectieve herinnering. U ontdekt ze op uw eigen ritme, dankzij de infrarood-hoofdtelefoon voor audiobegeleiding*.

Geen enkele van deze «speciale constructies» is ooit operationeel geworden. Na maandenlange bombardementen door de Geallieerden worden ze in de zomer van 1944 verlaten, slechts enkele weken voordat ze theoretisch in gebruik zouden worden genomen.

Ondanks de tonnen bommen waarmee ze worden bestookt (5000 ton in Siracourt, 4000 in Mimoyecques, meer dan 3000 in Éperlecques en LA COUPOLE), zijn de massieve betonstructuren van deze installaties (de beschermmuren zijn 5 meter dik) intact gebleven en kunnen ze nog steeds worden bezichtigd.

Toen op 6-6-1944 Franse en Britse Commando's de bunker aanvielen, werden ze terug geslagen door Duits machinegeweer vuur en handgranaten, die van het dak af gegooid werden, dat duurde enkele dagen. Op 9-6-1944 kreeg genie ltn Bob Orrell met 3man opdracht om de bunker te inspecteren en zij bliezen toen de deur eruit en na 4 uur gaven de 2 Duitse Officieren en 50 manschappen zich over. De bunker is in zijn originele staat gebleven en gerestaureerd .

Mini Urbex#2 Le bunker oasis

Visite d'un immense bunker qui fut reconverti en stand de tir puis abandonné dans les années 2000. Situé en plein centre ville il est pourtant très discret et n'a reçu que peu de visite. On y trouve une végétation luxuriante et l'ambiance est superbe. Attention, ce bunker est très abimé et présente des risques d’effondrement. Si vous connaissez sa position ne la dévoilez pas dans les commentaires sous peine de suppression.
