Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon. It was formed by a subduction zone on the Pacific coast and rests in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located about 50 miles east-southeast of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence. Abandoned WWII Radar Station - Cape Meares Oregon

WWII Radar Station - Cape Meares Oregon

Today I went searching for the old Cape Meares Radar Station. The facility was in operation between 1942 - 1944. The official station ID was B-25 and used the SCR-270 type radar. It was one of 65 radar sites of this type up and down the Pacific coast of the United States to protect it from enemy ships and airplanes during WWII.

The site was difficult to get to as there are no real trails to speak of and I had to pretty much just crawl my way up the hill side to the site. Therefore I would not recommend this adventure to anybody who is not in top shape and cant scurry up a hillside in 2'-4' thick underbrush.

If you park on the West side of Cape Meares Loop at the Short Beach access, then walk North on Cape Meares Loop about 150 feet to a larger than normal transformer on a telephone pole. Go north about another 10-15 yards while standing on the West side of the Cape Meares Loop and look east up into the hillside, you should be able to spot the double chimney of the Radar Station. From there, you are on your own!

Rocky Butte is an extinct volcanic cinder cone butte in Portland, Oregon, United States

ONEONTA GORGE | River Walkway to Raging Waterfall of Oregon

The Oneonta Gorge is a scenic gorge located in the Columbia River Gorge area east of Portland, Oregon. With 4 surrounding waterfalls, the Lower Oneonta Falls (most spectacular of the falls) has been preserved as a natural habitat, so there is no trail or footpath. The only way to see it is by walking a mile upstream in knee/chest-high water on very rocky terrain and over a massive log-jam at the base on the creek.

We were also lucky enough to be at the waterfall during the 2017 total solar eclipse that began it's United States trail of totality in Oregon. It went from day to night, leaving us in total darkness for a few minutes at the base of the waterfall. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.
