ALBANIA TRAVEL TIPS
Visiting Albania isn't usually at the top of peoples' bucket list, but it should be. Generally overlooked by tourists who would rather visit the nearby Greek islands, Albania is a non-crowded, laid-back, off-the-beaten-path destination that far exceeded our expectations. After spending a day in Albania's capital, Tirana, we took off on a 6-hour road trip toward the southern beach town of Sarandë, which gave us a little taste of the pristine valleys, rugged mountains, beautiful beaches, and overall charm the country has to offer. Along the way, we made a few stops, exploring the small medieval towns of Durres, Dhermi, Llogara, Fier, Vlore, and Gjirokastër. Then, at the end of our trip we just hopped on a 30-minute ferry to Corfu to spend another week in Greece.
Some highlights from our trip included our visits to the Blue Eye Syri Kalter natural springs and the UNESCO world heritage site in the old town of Gjirokastër, and chatting with locals we met along the way who easily lived up to Albania's reputation as having some of the friendliest people in the world (I mean, Mother Theresa is Albanian). Having had only a few days in the country, we left knowing we still have a ton to explore, and we are hoping to make it back soon to experience the famous reggae parties held on the tiny islands off of Sarandë each summer.

ALBANIA: EXPLORING BUTRINT, ONE OF EUROPE'S most important ANCIENT SITES
SUBSCRIBE: - Inhabited since prehistoric times, Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. Following a period of prosperity under Byzantine administration, then a brief occupation by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area. The present archaeological site is a repository of ruins representing each period in the city’s development.

Apollonia - Fier Albania
The archaeological site of Apollonia is located in central-western part of Albania, about 10 km west of Fier. Apollonia was founded in 558 BC by settlers from Corfu and Corinth.
The ancient site of Apollonia was an important port along the route between Rome and Byzantium. Emperor Octavian Augustus studied philosophy there, and later Aristotle mentioned the town in his book. According to the estimations, during its glorious period, about 60,000 inhabitants lived in the town, which was surrounded by a 4 km long wall.
Among the most interesting monuments of the site are the Bouleterion (city council), the library, the triumphal arch, the temple of Artemis and the Odeon.
In the 3rd -4th centuries A.D. Apollonia suffered serious destruction from several earthquakes and the town went into a rapid decline. The ruins of Appolonia serve as an open Archaeological Museum, now.
Next to The archaeological site the Monastery and Church of Saint Mary can be found. The monastery complex was built in the 13th century and one of the best examples of Byzantine architecture in Albania. The monastery houses the Apollonia Museum but at the time of writing the building is under renovation.

From the park begins the main pedestrian street, called Piazza, full of cafes and locals promenading in the evening hours.
Shkoder is the significant Islamic and Catholic center.
The most important sacred temples are:
The Ebu Beker Mosque, historically crucial in the scholarly learning.
The Orthodox Cathedral, a modern church dedicated to the Nativity of Christ.
The Franciscan Church, possessing several precious paintings.
And the Shkoder Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first patron of the city.
Also worth a visit, situated at a traditional Shkodran House, the Historical Museum.
Close by is the Loro Borici Stadium, the second largest stadium in the country, named after Albania’s greatest football player.
The main attraction of the city is the Rozafa Fortress, one of the biggest and most famous castles in Albania.
The fort has a fascinating history and amazing views from the highest point.
