A day trip to the magnificent Glacier of Aletsch. Situated in the Swiss Alps above 3800m.
Get to Fiesch by train or car. There, take the cable car, either to Eggishorn (2 stops) or just the 1st stop to Fiescheralp, from where you can hike to the top (Eggishorn). Eggishorn is 2927 meters above sea level.
That's what we did! It takes around 2- 2.5 hours to hike up there, but it's worth it, the view is breath taking!

The video switches between Bellwald and Fiesch. The images of the village are all Bellwald, most of the skiing is in Fiesch. Both are great!

The stunning Swiss Alps at sunset near Hasliberg in the heart of Switzerland. Cinematic footage of the majestic Eiger glacier, towering at 3,970 m in the Bernese Alps, , overlooking Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, or the Wetterhorn at 3,692 m, a peak in the Swiss Alps towering above the village of Grindelwald. Formerly known as Hasle Jungfrau, or the Mittelhorn at 3,704 m, being the highest of the Wetterhorner massif. On the opposite side you can enjoy views of the Ritzlihorn, itself over 3,000 m (3,282 m), overlooking Handegg. It lies on the range east of the Gauli Glacier and north of the Bächlistock. The footage was shot in Hasliberg, near a progressive school called: Ecole d'Humanité, founded in 1934, originally located in Germany and called: Odenwaldschule, until the founder fled to Switzerland to build the new school after the National Socialists came to power. It is considered one of the most progressive school in Switzerland and Europe , being nested in the heart of nature and having students and teachers from all over the World. the area is also the setting for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's death of Sherlock Holmes (Waterfall).
Also visible the The Jungfrau at 4,158 metres (13,642 ft), one of the main summits of the Bernese Alps, located between the northern canton of Bern and the southern canton of Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch. Together with the Eiger and Mönch, the Jungfrau forms a massive wall overlooking the Bernese Oberland and the Swiss Plateau, one of the most distinctive sights of the Swiss Alps.
The summit was first reached on August 3, 1811 by the Meyer brothers of Aarau and two chamois hunters from Valais. The ascent followed a long expedition over the glaciers and high passes of the Bernese Alps. It was not until 1865 that a more direct route on the northern side was opened.
The construction of the Jungfrau railway in the early 20th century, which connects Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, the saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau, made the area one of the most-visited places in the Alps. Along with the Aletsch Glacier to the south, the Jungfrau is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.

Eine Brücke in die weite Welt
Gerade mal 280 Meter trennen den kleinen Weiler Mühlebach im Obergoms von der Hauptstrasse und dem Bahnhof im Nachbarsort. 280 Meter Luftlinie, die lange unüberwindbar waren und einen 30 minütigen Umweg erforderlich machten. Bis mit Unterstützung der Berghilfe vor zwei Jahren eine Hängebrücke zwischen Mühlebach und Fürgangen gebaut wurde. Die „Hängebrigga“ ist heute für viele Mühlebacher sozusagen das Tor zur Welt – und sie hat gleichzeitig neues Leben in das kleine Walliser Dorf gebracht. Dank der zahlreicheren Besucher sind neue Angebote entstanden, wie etwa das Bed and Breakfast von Familie Kummer.

The Great Aletsch Glacier is a vision of primaeval beauty. High up on the Moosfluh, Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn viewpoints is the best place to admire the scale and unique magic of the Great Aletsch Glacier. This huge river of ice that stretches over 23 km from its formation in the Jungfrau region (at 4000 m) down to the Massa Gorge, around 2500 m below, fascinates and inspires every visitor.

How glaciers shape the landscape
The Great Aletsch Glacier has shaped the landscape of the Aletsch Arena over thousands of years. During the last ice age (around 18,000 years ago), ice still covered the mountain ridges between the Bettmerhorn and the Riederhorn; only the peaks rose above the ice. How do we know? The landscape tells us: the area that was then covered by ice is smooth and rounded, but the shapes of the Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn are sharp and jagged.
We can also trace how the Great Aletsch Glacier has grown and receded in the landscape of the Aletsch Forest. Around 11,000 years ago, the terminus of the glacier was in the Rhône Valley and the glacier's edge reached almost as far as Riederfurka. The immense lateral moraine that was formed in the process is clearly visible from the moraine trail. The maximum extension of the Great Aletsch Glacier to date was around 1860. At that time, it was around 3 km longer than it is today and the edge of the glacier was a good 200 m higher, near the Aletsch Forest. This area still stands out against the surrounding countryside as a light strip of land with fairly young vegetation.
Did you know:
When two glaciers merge, the lateral moraines join and form a medial moraine. As three large firn fields meet at Concordia, the Great Aletsch Glacier has in fact two medial moraines. These appear as dark lines running along the length of the glacier. Looking in the direction of flow, the glacier's right-hand medial moraine is the Kranzberg medial moraine and the left-hand medial moraine is the Trugberg medial moraine.
The effects of climate change
Global warming is also affecting the Aletsch Arena's ice sea to a concerning extent. Measurements by the Pro Natura Center Aletsch show that the Great Aletsch Glacier is experiencing dramatic ablation, shrinking by up to 50 metres in length each year and retreating significantly at the edges.

Velocity
The ice formed in the catchment area of the glacier moves downhill like a viscous mass, providing a constant supply of ice to the snout. The distance covered by the ice over time in the process is the glacier's velocity. The velocity of the Great Aletsch Glacier is 200 m per year at Concordia, and 80 – 90 m per year at the level of the Aletsch Forest.

If this mass of ice were melted, it could supply every single person on the Earth with a litre of water every day for 4.5 years.

Jungfraujoch is a notable saddle in the Bernese Alps, connecting the two four-thousander peaks Jungfrau and Mönch, at an elevation of 3,466 metres (11,371 ft) above sea level. It is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, situated on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch.
Since 1912, the Jungfraujoch has been accessible to tourists by the Jungfrau line, a railway from Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg, running partly underground through a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch. The Jungfraujoch railway station, at an elevation of 3,454 metres (11,332 ft) is the highest in Europe. It lies east of the saddle, below the Sphinx station, and is connected to the Top of Europe building, which includes several panoramic restaurants and a post office. Several tunnels lead outside, where secured hiking trails on the crevassed glacier can be followed, in particular to the Mönchsjoch Hut.
The Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world, provides an additional viewing platform at a height of 3,572 metres (11,719 ft). It can be reached by an elevator from the Jungfraujoch. The observatory houses one of the Global Atmosphere Watch's atmospheric research stations. The Jungfraujoch radio relay station, which is not accessible to the public, is installed west of the Jungfraujoch, on the Jungfrau ridge. It is Europe's highest radio relay station.
First ascent
=========
There is a tradition in the Bernese Oberland, supported by some documentary evidence, that a pass existed between Grindelwald and Fiesch in Valais in the late medieval period, later lost to the advancing glaciers.
With the early development of tourism in Switzerland and the exploration of the High Alps in the 19th century, there were once again attempts to traverse the great ridge that encloses the head of the Aletsch Glacier, and connecting the Eggishorn with Grindelwald and Wengernalp. Four such routes were found, with the Jungfraujoch and the Eigerjoch being among the most difficult passes in the Alps.
The first passage of Jungfraujoch succeeded in July 1862, by a party of six English climbers and six Swiss guides: Leslie Stephen, F. J. Hardy, H. B. George, Living, Moore, and Morgan, with Christian Almer, Christian and Peter Michel, Ulrich Kauffmann, P. Baumann, and C. Bohren as guides. The time of ascent from Wengernalp was nine hours.
The party turned back on the first day at a bergschrund, returning on the following day with a ladder 25 ft (7.6 m) in length, carried by Peter Rubi, a porter from Grindelwald. The way lay at first by the rocky buttress of the Mönch, separating the Eiger and Guggi glaciers. From the buttress the route descended a short distance in order to reach the Guggi Glacier, which could be ascended to a plateau. This halting place was reached in about three hours.
Above the bergschrund was a second and smaller plateau which was situated immediately under the long slopes of broken neve that lay below the saddle. The final and very arduous stage in the ascent was a single patch of dark rocks jutted out from the snow in the ridge connecting the Jungfrau with the Mönch. After more than an hour of climbing, a great wall of ice, whose projecting cornice of snow was fringed by long icicles, had to be avoided bearing left in the direction of the Mönch, along the base of the wall by a slippery pathway of ice formed from the dripping from the icicles above. At a point where the pathway thinned out nearly to a point, and was cut across by a transverse crevasse, the wall became low enough to be scaled by the ladder. This was the last serious obstacle: a moderate slope of névé, unbroken by crevasses, then led up to the summit of the saddle.
After reaching the first patch of rocks, a short way below the saddle on the south side, the party divided: George and Moore, with C. Almer and U. Kaufmann went down to the Eggishorn, while the remainder of the party returned to Grindelwald by the Mönchsjoch.
