Eager to explore Poznan, our first stop of the day was the Old Market Square, which is a sight to behold. As soon as we turned the street from our apartment, we were greeted with the Old Town Hall.
The top attraction here is a row of buildings known as the Merchant Houses. They stand shoulder to shoulder and are painted in different patterns, adding a bright splash of colour to the town.
The Royal Castle dates back to 1249, though if you think it looks rather new, that’s because it was mostly destroyed during WW2 and it had to be rebuilt. After paying for our tickets, we made a beeline straight for the tower, to enjoy some views of Poznan.
After visiting the castle, we did some wandering around the Old Town and ended up at the Former Jesuit College. This is where young people were educated in theology and philosophy.
Today the college houses the City Council, so we couldn’t really tour the place, but they do have a nice courtyard and a cafe for visitors.
Another thing to do in Poznan is visit Fara Poznanska, a beautiful Baroque church located right next to the Former Jesuit College. We arrived just as they were setting up for the weekly concert, so we sat down for a bit of music.
From there, we walked west of the Old Town, where things have more of a modern look. We saw the Fontana Wolnosh-chi Wolności, had a quick peek inside the Imperial Castle, and we also discovered that Polish people have a big love for ice cream.
We later googled Kolorowa and discovered that it’s the best ice cream shop in Poznan, so maybe we should’ve stood in line!
After visiting Cathedral Island, we went past Śródka, which is a really cool neighbourhood with lots of street art. We then had a little break by Lake Malta, which looked to be a popular weekend spot.
Another cool thing to do in Poznan is to visit KontenerArt, which is part urban beach, outdoor bar, art space, children’s playground, food cart central, and herb and spice garden. This was an unexpected find and it was really nice to see people of all ages enjoying this space.
On a rainy afternoon, we paid a quick visit to Poznan’s Archaeological Museum. Admittedly, it’s mostly geared towards children, but it was a fun way to stay dry.

Trapani is a city in western Sicily with a crescent-shaped coastline. At the western tip, offering views as far as the Aegadian Islands, is the 17th-century Torre di Ligny watchtower. It houses the Museo di Preistoria e del Mare, with archeological artifacts. North of the harbor, the Chiesa del Purgatorio church holds wooden sculptures that are paraded around the city during Easter’s Processione dei Misteri.
Trapani is a city and comune on the west coast of Sicily in Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Trapani. Founded by Elymians, the city is still an important fishing port and the main gateway to the nearby Egadi Islands.Much of Trapani's economy still depends on the sea. Fishing and canning are the main local industries, with fishermen using the mattanza technique to catch tuna. Coral is also an important export, along with salt, marble, and marsala wine. The nearby coast is lined with numerous salt-pans. The city is also an important ferry port, with links to the Egadi Islands, Pantelleria, Sardinia, and Tunisia. It also has its own airport, the Trapani-Birgi Airport.
Much of the old city of Trapani dates from the later medieval or early modern periods; there are no extant remains of the ancient city. Many of the city's historic buildings are designed in the Baroque style. Notable monuments include:
The Church of Sant'Agostino (14th century), with the splendid rose-window
The Church of Santa Maria di Gesù (15th–16th centuries)
The magnificent Basilica-Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Annunziata (also called Madonna di Trapani) originally built in 1315–1332 and rebuilt in 1760. It houses a marble statue of the Madonna of Trapani, which might be the work of Nino Pisano, and with the museum Agostino Pepoli.

The Baroque Palazzo della Giudecca or Casa Ciambra.
The Cathedral (built in 1421, but restored to the current appearance in the 18th century by Giovanni Biagio Amico). It includes an Annunciation attributed to Anthony van Dyck.
Church of Maria SS. dell'Intria, another notable example of Sicilian Baroque.
Church of Badia Nuova, a small Baroque church.
Castello di Terra, a ruined 12th-century castle.
Ligny Tower, a 17th-century watchtower housing an archaeological museum.
Monte Erice is a cable car ride from the city and aside from the cobbled streets and medieval castle, there are views of Tunisia and Africa from up there on clear days. Several beaches run along the coast of Trapani, the best of which are at Marausa about 9 km (6 mi) south of the city.
Trapani-Birgi Airport is a military-civil joint use airport (third for traffic on the island). Recently the airport has seen an increase of traffic thanks to low-cost carriers from all parts of Europe (i.e. London-Stansted and London-Luton, Paris Beauvais, Dublin, Bruxelles, Munich, Frankfurt, Eindhoven, Stockholm, Malta).
The city is renowned for its Easter related Holy Week activities and traditions, culminating between Good Friday and Holy Saturday in the Processione dei Misteri di Trapani, colloquially simply the Misteri di Trapani (in English the Procession of the Mysteries of Trapani or the Mysteries of Trapani), a day-long passion procession organized and sponsored by the city's guilds, featuring twenty floats of wood, canvas and glue sculptures, mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries, of individual scenes of the events of the Passion. The Misteri are among the oldest continuously running religious events in Europe, having been played every Good Friday since before the Easter of 1612. Running for at least 16 continuous hours, but occasionally well beyond the 24 hours, they are the longest religious festival in Sicily and in Italy. Important also to the cult of the Madonna of Trapani. The city gives its name to a variety of pesto – pesto alla trapenese – made using almonds instead of the traditional pine nuts in Ligurian pesto. Trapani was also used, even if never mentioned by name, but only evidenced in movie scenes, as the base for filming the first serie of La piovra drama miniseries.

Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is just off the toe of Italy's boot. Its rich history is reflected in sites like the Valley of the Temples, the well-preserved ruins of 7 monumental, Doric-style Greek temples, and in the Byzantine mosaics at the Cappella Palatina, a former royal chapel in capital city Palermo. On Sicily’s eastern edge is Mount Etna, one of Europe’s highest active volcanoes. Sicily has a rich and unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, music, literature, cuisine, and architecture. It is also home to important archaeological and ancient sites, such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples, and Selinunte.

The Aeolian Islands feature whitewashed villages and black-sand beaches. Sicily’s melting-pot cuisine includes specialties such as caponata, arancini and cannoli, and its wine-producing tradition dates to ancient times.
There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites on Sicily. By the order of inscription:
Valle dei Templi (1997) is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture, The site is located in Agrigento.
Villa Romana del Casale (1997) is a Roman villa built in the first quarter of the 4th century and located about 3 km (2 mi) outside the town of Piazza Armerina. It contains the richest, largest and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world.
Aeolian Islands (2000) are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea, named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus.
Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto (2002) represent the culmination and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe. It includes several towns: Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli.
Necropolis of Pantalica (2005) is a large necropolis in Sicily with over 5,000 tombs dating from the 13th to the 7th centuries BC. Syracuse is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres and architecture. They are situated in south-eastern Sicily.
Mount Etna (2013) is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity and generated myths, legends and naturalistic observation from Greek, Celts and Roman classic and medieval times.

Palermo, Sicily, Italy. A Walk Inside the Church of St. Catherine
The Church of Saint Catherine (Italian: Chiesa di Santa Caterina or simply Santa Caterina) is an important church of Palermo located in the heart of the historic centre, between Piazza Bellini and Piazza Pretoria, in the same area of other well-known architectural landmarks like the churches of Martorana and San Cataldo(both of them are World Heritage Sites), the Fontana Pretoria and the Palazzo Pretorio, headquarters of the Palermo municipality.
The church is a synthesis of Sicilian Baroque, Rococo and Renaissance styles.
In 1310 the last will of the rich Benvenuta Mastrangelo determined the foundation of a female monastery under the direction of the Dominican Order. The new monastery was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Between 1566 and 1596 the church was rebuilt.
During the 19th century the church was damaged on several occasions: during the uprising of 1820-1821, the Sicilian revolution of 1848, the Gancia revolt, the insurrection of Palermo (1860) and the Sette e mezzo revolt (1866).
