60163 hauling 'The Border Raider' 05-07-2014
It's been some time since 60163 last graced the West Coast Main Line, and on a glorious 5th July 2014 The A1 took to the rails once again, but for only it's 2nd main line tour this year. Clearly once again there would be an attempt at the Shap record and so with this on mind, there was only really one place to go: Shap Summit. Despite leaving Carnforth 5 minutes late, the tour reached Tebay just 1 minute behind, the start of an exceptional climb with 60163 roaring round the bend from Shap Wells barely 5 minutes later, cresting the summit at some 43mph, having covered the section from Grayrigg in just over 10 1/2 minutes. A small mistake on my part after panning; I absentmindedly moved the zoom toggle on the camera a little too far over resulting in a very fast zoom in to try and get a photographers arm out of the shot, but these things happen occasionally.
With nearly 4 hours until the return we headed into the Lune Gorge and Dillicar Common, passing the time by walking to the summit of Linghaw on the eastern side of the Valley on the edge of the Howgill Fells. returning to the car in plenty of time, we set up with about half an hour remaining before Tornado was due to arrive. In the event, the A1 was right on time but appeared with no warning making easy work of the level section over the site of Dillicar Troughs before the short climb to Grayrigg summit.
The 2 booked stops in the loops at Oxenholme and Carnforth meant that leapfrogging the tour was fairly easy, and so we headed to Galgate, which we had only checked out in the morning on the way north. The booked passing time was about 1815 but 60163 was slightly ahead of schedule, flying past running 3 minutes early. The A1 would come off the train at Preston then run light to Crewe before heading for Swanage a couple of days later.

The Fellsman at Preston Leander Part 1
I filmed Leander at various locations near Preston during August and September. In this video (Part 1) I've arranged the clips in order of location so you see her leaving the main line at Penwortham, climbing the Farington curve to Lostock Hall and arriving and departing Bamber Bridge. Brief return clips culminate in a memorable evening at Preston station (see Part 2) when Leander was joined by 45231 on the adjoining platform. Both are shown departing within five minutes of each other. When was the last time two steam locos in service were seen together at Preston station? Any suggestions?
