STORYLINE:
Italian Premier Romano Prodi on Tuesday denounced Hamas militants for breaking a truce with Israel, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, after talks with Prodi, described the violation as an exceptional
act.
Abbas also met the Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema, who pressed for the release of a captured Israeli
soldier, Gilad Shalit, and with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican, who was encouraging the resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
I do not hide my concern for the breaking of the truce by Hamas which I firmly condemn, Prodi said at a news conference with Abbas after the two men met in the evening at the Premier's office.
I hope it is temporary. We cannot talk about peace if there are missiles and bombs which break the truce, Prodi
said, referring to the cease-fire that Hamas agreed to along the Gaza-Israel border in November.
Hamas militants fired rockets and mortar shells toward Israel on Tuesday and said they considered the truce to have come to an end.
In Rome, Abbas called on Israel to exercise self-control.
As far as violence is concerned, I want to stress that exchanging accusations will lead to results that we can't and we don't want to accept, he said.
Abbas also commented on the fate of an Israeli soldier who was seized in June after Hamas-allied militants had tunnelled from Gaza into Israel.
As far as Gilad Shalit is concerned, I can say that there are many efforts taking place and an intense exchange of communications among Israel and the kidnappers, as far as I know he is still alive and in good condition.
Gaza militants have demanded the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners for Shalit.
Earlier this month, the captors handed Israel a list with names of prisoners they want freed, but no progress has been made since then.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Romano Prodi (Italian: [roˈmaːno ˈprɔːdi] (listen); born 9 August 1939) is an Italian politician who served as the 10th President of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004. He served twice as Prime Minister of Italy, first from 17 May 1996 to 21 October 1998 and then from 17 May 2006 to 8 May 2008. He is considered the founder of the Italian centre-left and one of the most prominent and iconic figures of the so-called Second Republic. Prodi is often nicknamed Il Professore (The Professor) due to his academic career.A former professor of economics and international advisor to Goldman Sachs, Prodi ran in 1996 as lead candidate of The Olive Tree coalition, winning the general election and serving as Prime Minister of Italy until 1998. Following the victory of his coalition The Union over the House of Freedoms led by Silvio Berlusconi in the April 2006 Italian elections, Prodi took power again. On 24 January 2008, he lost a vote of confidence in the Senate house and consequently tendered his resignation as Prime Minister to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, but he continued in office for almost four months for routine business, until early elections were held and a new government was formed. Until now, he is the first progressive candidate to ever come first at legislative elections since 1921 and to manage to form a government without the need of opponents' parliamentary support.
On 14 October 2007, Prodi became the first President of the Democratic Party upon foundation of the party. On 12 September 2008, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon selected Prodi as president of the African Union-United Nations peacekeeping panel. He is currently serving as the United Nations Special Envoy for the Sahel.
