El Camino Primitivo, Ribadiso - Pedrouzo - Monte del Gozo, 27 marzo 2010..wmv
Today, weather improved, we unexpectedly walked 37kms. Intending to stay the night at Pedrouzo albergue, took the left fork in the woods (shown) by mistake and, 2 kms later having asked someone, found out the albergue was 2 kms behind us!! Fortunately, we had bought baguettes in Arzua, a town 2 kms after leaving Ribadiso, for lunch so, after discussing what to do, decided to go on. Knowing there were very steep and long ascents ahead of us leading to Monte del Gozo, wasn´t an easy decision. No turning back. Forward.... (feet???!)
It was good walking weather all day, not too hot nor cold. After Arzua we walked through woods most of the time, crossed stony bridges, (passing Manuela), streams full of rushing water, banks of violets, lovely lane lined with camelias and May blossom...wonderful.
There are several country bars in the woods along the way if you want a snack/drink. We didn´t, the going was good and all fine till we realised we´d missed the Pedrouzo albergue! We sat on a stone bridge over a stream, and had lunch, felt better to carry on.
From there we walked steeply up some hard ascents. I thanked God it wasn´t summer as no way could I do that in heat and sun which is why we had chosen March. The track became a mountain path ascending, with brambles, bracken, heather, moss, fewer trees, and we saw a red squirrel run across infront of us.
The only disturbance was being aware Santiago airport is nearby and hearing the planes.
At the top there´s a T path junction (shown) where you turn R. The path leads you to and alongside the road to Santiago. Santiago! So close yet still so far! It seems an eternity getting to Monte del Gozo. Up and down and along roads (repeat..). FEET!!!!! Sang songs to keep up flagging spirits and feet. Avoid singing Raindrops keep falling on my head.. and walking in time to it, from our experience it then rains. Still had enough energy to threaten Mika w my walking stick (shown)!
Collapsed on a bench upon arrival at Monte Del Gozo. The albergue is enormous with lots and lots of buildings, all dorms and showers, and a fully operative kitchen. Couldn´t find the entrance so left Mika to it and took off rucksack, boots and socks. I didn´t know my feet were attached to my legs, they looked awful, red and swollen -but no blisters at least. Mika returned and I hobbled into the room designated and fell on the bed. That was that. Complete physical and mental exhaustion.
A good hot shower later helped recovery and we went to the nearby (basic) shop for some eggs, peas and spuds which we cooked up for dinner. The best! A hot drink and we talked about the next day. We were going to arrive, finally, at Santiago de Compostela!!! AND we were one day ahead of our plans (plane due back to Reus nr Barcelona on 30th). José from Madrid had already phoned us having arrived at Santiago first but he would be gone by the time we arrived. He told us, if you are in the first 10 pilgrims to arrive at Santiago cathedral you get a free meal. Good! Our budget being practically at rock bottom by then this was a good idea! We went to bed early, deciding to get up at 5 a.m.
