Perrott's Folly - The Two Towers of Birmingham
Perrott’s Folly towers above Edgbaston in Birmingham. Built in 1758 by John Perrott as a gazebo overlooking parkland - a place for entertainment and relaxation. The tower is 29m tall and built from warm red brick in Strawberry Hill Gothic style. There are 7 levels connected by a spiral staircase.
The fortified chimney of Edgbaston waterworks is a close neighbour.
Many people think these two towers were the inspiration for Tolkien’s towers in the Lord of the Rings as he lived and studied nearby. There is no reference to them in the Tolkien archive so it is, perhaps, a Middle Earth myth.
Birmingham landmarks and the countryside beyond, can be seen from the round and arched Windows. Birmingham Oratory is to the south east of the folly. Tolkien was an altar boy beneath the gilded dome. To the north, high rise buildings of Birmingham city centre. Old Joe, Birmingham university clock tower, is due south.
Perrott’s Folly is a Georgian delight entwined in legend.

Discussing the MSC Seaside With My Friend Emma
Even though we're separated by 5,000 miles and 8 time zones, I got to have a great chat with my new friend, Emma Leteace, about cruising.
After the introductions, we discussed our very different reactions to our cruises with MSC cruise line. She had sailed on the Meraviglia recently and I had been on the MSC Seaside... but our difference in opinions about MSC was as wide as the Atlantic ocean!
After a few minutes discussing MSC, we move on to a discussion of other matters... such as Emma's cruise on Independence Of The Seas, including how she conquered the FlowRider... our mutual appreciation of Norwegian Cruise Line... the extremely formal cruise she took with Cunard... and her upcoming Princess cruise from Singapore to Tokyo.
The video ends with a shameless attempt on my part to try to get some of my 177,000 YouTube subscribers to subscribe to Emma's channel so that she'll reach the 1000 subscriber threshold that will allow her to start getting a cut of the advertising revenue that YouTube gets from her channel.
Talking to Emma was just a complete delight for me. What's not to like? She's absolutely gorgeous, totally charming, and has the a voice that would melt just about any man's heart. I'm a fan.
By the way, I managed to mangle the title of the Barbra Streisand song that I mentioned in the video. It's All I Ask Of You, not All I Ask For You. Sorry!

Best Motorcycling Routes: East Sussex, Pevensey Bay to A25
On a sunny morning in June 2013, I took a recommended ride out from Pevensey Bay on the south coast in East Sussex, up to the A25 near the M25/M26 junction. I found this route here: but I did it in reverse.
