Halle, an example of the belgian ice winter
Halle, Belgian city and municipality in the district Halle-Vilvoorde of the province Flemish Brabant. Something more than 30.000 inhabitants in a city situated on the flemish-wallon boundary. Halle is in fact close to Wallonia. The city is situated on the Charleroi-Brussel channel, that we see here in this video. These images show how the temperature is cold during the winter: the huge ice sheets suggest the north pole landscape.

In this video I eat delicious grub at Foodhallen in Amsterdam, an artisanal food court offering tasty international cuisine. Foodhallen can best be described as a high-end food court, but don't worry it's not pretentious or overpriced. This food court is dominated by the many bars that are set up around the restaurants catering to the hoards of people looking for a icy glass of craft beer.
Once inside, you can stroll around the many food vendors to see what strikes your fancy. I remember being extremely overwhelmed not just by the quantity of food vendors, but by the quality of the food. As soon as you step foot inside, you'll be confronted with the leg of Iberico ham set up on a pedestal at a Spanish joint. The variety of food is endless, choose from Turkish, Vietnamese, Dutch, Korean, Japanese, Mexican, Indian, American, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Syrian, and the list goes on!
I decided to try out three different places at Foodhallen that looked the best to me. The first place I stopped at is called Maza and they excel at cooking up delicious Middle-Eastern fare. I went with the mezza plate which offers a mix of different hummus dips, and includes a generous portion of falafel and flatbread. As soon as I received my food, I was in awe of the brilliant colors on my plate. The three dips were various shades of the rainbow, and one was even covered in fresh pomegranate seeds!
My favorite dip is called muhammara, and its made from roasted red peppers and walnuts. The flavors that arose out of this red paste were heavenly! The falafel was perfectly flash fried. My plate was garnished with peppers, olives, and fresh herbs which made this dish extraordinary.
The next place I tried out at Foodhallen was Soto & Sate. This restaurant offers Indonesian cuisine, street food style. As their name implies, their specialty is skewers of meat with sate sauce. Luckily for me (as I was craving a dose of veggies), they have an option to select chargrilled tofu with tomatoes.
Having come from Bali over to Holland, I didn't have high expectations for this place. I was simply craving asian food, however, I thought this place was pretty decent! The peanut sauce was yummy and the tofu was extra firm which allowed it to crispy up on the edges nicely. I also though the portions were quite large for only $5 EURO.
The last place I tried at Foodhallen was The Rough Kitchen, which serves traditional American food. We got the pulled pork sandwich and boy was it a beast! It tasted as spectacular as it looked. Served on fresh bread, and piled high with pork, this was one heck of a sandwich. Although I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw (because I'm not a big fan of mayonnaise), I thought the meat was intensely delicious!
All in all, Foodhallen was a great experience! I had a blast eating at these places and I can't wait to go back and try out more stalls. The prices are pretty decent considering the high quality of the food, and the atmosphere is very lively.
