Horseshoe Bay to Burnaby: Then and Now (1966 & 2017)
The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has been providing some amazing film footage of BC's highways from 1966, including the drive from Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) to New Burnaby. Thanks to them for making this footage available for us to enjoy.
I thought it would be fun project to shoot the same route in 2017, and highlight the differences between 'then and now'. So, I created a side by side view showing a comparison of the route, about 51 years later years later.
Some notes:
- The 2017 video was shot on November 4, 2017.
- The 1966 video is unedited, however small sections of the 2017 video have been cut (mostly due to so much traffic slowing down the drive).
- I did my best to sync the video wherever possible using landmarks and road alignments (bridges, streets, buildings, etc) as freeze frames, allowing for a great visual comparison of the old and new footage. The speed of the video varies throughout, slowing down for our landmarks.
- If you wish, you can slow down by clicking on the gear shaped icon in the bottom right corner of the video screen, then click “Speed” and choose your desired speed.

Located on the West coast of Canada, Vancouver is one of the world's most captivating places to visit. Big city atmosphere mixed with nature and mountains, this city won't disappoint. Downtown Vancouver is vibrant and filled with urban coffee shops, restaurants and international cuisines. The locals are many different nationalities and friendliest people you'll ever meet!
Nature is present pretty much everywhere you go in the Vancouver area. Even from downtown you'll be able to see those mountain views. Just a short drive from the city you can go hiking and exploring the beautiful forests and parks that the area has to offer. Vancouver is ideal for people who love the outdoors and never get tired of mountains and the possibility to explore new places. The best part is the climate: it doesn't get too cold in winters and summers are not too hot. The average annual temperature is about 11 degrees celcius.
The city has many activities and attractions to see, but here is my list of the top 8 places to visit in Vancouver.
1.Canada Place
Canada Place is one of the best Vancouver tourist attractions. Take the SeaBus from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver
2. Cleveland Dam & Capilano Lake
Go hiking in this amazing setting surrounded by beautiful mountains and Capilano Lake.
3. Grouse Mountain
Near Capilano Lake you'll find Grouse Mountain. Take the Skyride up to the mountain and see an amazing view of Vancouver. Go skiing, hiking or snowboarding or in the winter explore the Light Walk.
4. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
Out of all Vancouver tourist attractions this garden is one of the most unique ones making you feel like you're in a different country.
5. Granville Island
Walk around this pretty island near downtown Vancouver. Go visit the Grandville Island Public Market and buy food, produce and handcrafted products.
6. Queen Elizabeth Park
This popular park is must see in Vancouver. Take a stroll in this beautiful park that is also the highest point in Vancouver city area. You'll be able to see downtown Vancouver.
7. Bowen Island & Snug Cove

Vancouver Stanley Park to Horseshoe Bay - YouTube
Pretty well every time we come to Vancouver we go for a drive around Stanley Park, it's one of the iconic sights in Vancouver. At one time there used to be a variety of animals in a zoo like setting here including monkeys and polar bears, but those animals are now long gone. Still the beauty and quiet oasis that Stanley Park is in the busy city makes it for a perfect escape. You can bike around on the sea wall, in the summer there are beaches to relax by and then there is the Vancouver Aquarium that has many things to keep your interest. All in all not a bad place to spend a few hours.
From Stanley Park we headed over the Lions Gate Bridge to North/West Vancouver and on to Horseshoe Bay, just a short drive away.
