Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is just off the toe of Italy's boot. Its rich history is reflected in sites like the Valley of the Temples, the well-preserved ruins of 7 monumental, Doric-style Greek temples, and in the Byzantine mosaics at the Cappella Palatina, a former royal chapel in capital city Palermo. On Sicily’s eastern edge is Mount Etna, one of Europe’s highest active volcanoes. Sicily has a rich and unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, music, literature, cuisine, and architecture. It is also home to important archaeological and ancient sites, such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples, and Selinunte.

The medieval hill town of Taormina, famed for its chic Film Fest, is a popular base for touring Etna and the baroque city at its foot, Catania. Nearby Siracusa is known for Greek ruins and its historic island center, Ortigia. The southeastern coast has sandy beaches and calm waters, while Agrigento is home to the Valley of the Temples. The Aeolian Islands feature whitewashed villages and black-sand beaches. Sicily’s melting-pot cuisine includes specialties such as caponata, arancini and cannoli, and its wine-producing tradition dates to ancient times.
There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites on Sicily. By the order of inscription:
Valle dei Templi (1997) is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture, The site is located in Agrigento.
Villa Romana del Casale (1997) is a Roman villa built in the first quarter of the 4th century and located about 3 km (2 mi) outside the town of Piazza Armerina. It contains the richest, largest and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world.
Aeolian Islands (2000) are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea, named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus.
Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto (2002) represent the culmination and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe. It includes several towns: Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli.
Necropolis of Pantalica (2005) is a large necropolis in Sicily with over 5,000 tombs dating from the 13th to the 7th centuries BC. Syracuse is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres and architecture. They are situated in south-eastern Sicily.
Mount Etna (2013) is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity and generated myths, legends and naturalistic observation from Greek, Celts and Roman classic and medieval times.
Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedral churches of Cefalù and Monreale; includes a series of nine civil and religious structures dating from the era of the Norman kingdom of Sicily (1130–1194)

The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is a small palazzo in Venice, Italy, best known for its external multi-arch spiral staircase known as the Scala Contarini del Bovolo. The palazzo is located in a small, less-travelled calle (street) near Campo Manin, about half-way between Campo San Bartolo, at the foot of the Rialto, and Campo Santo Stefano.
The staircase leads to an arcade, providing an impressive view of the city roof-tops. This palazzo has been visitable since February 2016. The palazzo was designed and built in its current form in the 15th century by the architect Giovanni Candi as one of the city residences of the Contarini family. Giorgio Spavento is believed to have been responsible for the addition of the grand spiral staircase on the exterior in 1499.
The Palazzo del Bovolo was chosen by Orson Welles as one of the main locations (Brabantio's house) for his 1952 adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello, and the staircase is prominently featured in the film. The staircase was closed to the public for restoration work which began in August 2015 but is now open.

Day trip to Capri - Hiking to the Arco Naturale
Come with me for a day in Capri!
We catch the 10am ferry from Positano and on arriving in Capri port we walk up to the town centre, avoiding the crowder Funicular train. Starting in the Piazzetta we walk through the town and follow the signs towards the Arco Naturale (the Natural Arch).
Along the way we spot the newly launched Sailing Yacht A, designed by Phillipe Starck, moored in the bay.
The hike we did is about 2 hours long so remember to bring sunscreen and water!
The cave I knew nothing about is the Grotta Matermania, a large natural cave with the remains of a Roman Nymphaeum inside.
We went for lunch at just off the main square in Capri centre. I highly recommend the Capri picnics that you can book through the website!

E' impossibile non innamorarsi di San Vito Lo Capo e dei suoi dintorni, soprattutto per chi come noi ha deciso di visitare San Vito Lo Capo in Maggio, un periodo davvero perfetto per scoprire e vivere questo angolo di Sicilia senza essere stressato dalla valanga di turisti che la affollano durante i mesi di Luglio e Agosto.
E' stato un viaggio all'insegna del cibo alla scoperta dei migliori ristoranti di San Vito Lo Capo, che abbiamo trovato davvero di altissimo livello. Ma siamo andati oltre: siamo entrati nelle loro cucine per assistere a show cooking che ci hanno mostrato le ricette e i segreti di alcuni dei piatti tipici di San Vito Lo Capo e del Trapanese come il cous cous.
E poi c'è il mare che fa sognare, in special modo quello della Riserva dello Zingaro, uno dei luoghi a parer nostro più belli d'Italia.
A pochi chilometri si trova un altro gioiello al quale non abbiamo potuto resistere, nonostante l'avessimo già visitato: il sito archeologico di Segesta.

The Teatro Regio di Parma, originally constructed as the Nuovo Teatro Ducale, is an opera house and opera company in Parma, Italy. Replacing an obsolete house, the new Ducale achieved prominence in the years after 1829, and especially so after the composer Giuseppe Verdi, who was born near Busseto, some thirty kilometres away, had achieved fame. Also well known in Parma was the conductor Arturo Toscanini, was born there in 1867.
As has been noted by Lee Marshall, while not as well known as La Scala in Milan or La Fenice in Venice, the city’s Teatro Regio....is considered by opera buffs to be one of the true homes of the great Italian tradition, and the well-informed audience is famous for giving voice to its approval or disapproval – not just from the gallery.
The 1,400-seat auditorium, with four tiers of boxes topped by a gallery, was inaugurated on 16 May 1829 when it presented the premiere of Vincenzo Bellini's Zaira, a production which was staged another seven times, although it did not prove to be popular with the Parma audiences. Initially Rossini had been invited to compose a work for the inauguration of the house, but he was too busy and so the task fell to Bellini. However, that inaugural season saw three Rossini operas staged, including Moïse et Pharaon, Semiramide, and Il barbiere di Siviglia. Today, the company stages about four operas each season from mid January to April and, since 2003, it has presented an annual Verdi Festival each October.
The façade of the theatre was built in the neoclassical style, which has remained unchanged over the years. With a colonnade of ten Ionic granitic columns at the base, which created an arcade, this supports five imperial-style windows above, topped by a tympana and decorative elements enrich the highest part of the facade with one central semi-circular window, besides bas-reliefs by Tommaso Bandini of two muses at one lyra in the central and lateral position.
Verdi, who was born and who grew up only 20 miles from Parma, was perhaps quite naturally soon adopted by the city as its native son, especially as his fame grew after the success of the 1840 Nabucco. His operas have had a special place in the Regio's programming after 17 April 1843, when Verdi came to direct his Nabucco. Since that time, the Regio has staged every one of his operas, including adaptations of original versions such as I Lombardi of 1843 which became Jérusalem for Paris in 1847 or the 1847 Macbeth which was revised in 1865.
