Commune située à 40 km au sud de Barcelone, Sitges a longtemps été enclavée. Encerclée par les collines et la mer Méditerranée, elle est aujourd'hui accessible par autoroute depuis Barcelone mais, très longtemps, seules une petite route de bord de mer et la route traversant les montagnes par Sant Pere de Ribes ont permis de la rejoindre. La ville, cosmopolite, est l'une des stations balnéaires espagnoles les plus branchées de Méditerranée, lieu de villégiature des grandes familles d'Espagne (l'Infante y a une villa), lieu de fête de la jeunesse dorée de Barcelone (multiples bars et clubs renommés), capitale gay européenne.
