Boats in fishing village decorated by international artists
(11 Oct 2018) LEADIN:
Artists have descended on an Egyptian fishing town for a festival dedicated to decorated boats.
It's the fifth year Burullus has hosted the Symposium for Drawing on Walls and Boats.
STORYLINE:
There's an explosion of colour at the waterfront in Burullus.
Artists from across the world have come here to decorate boats in an array of imaginative designs.
This fishing town has been hosting the Symposium for Drawing on Walls and Boats since 2014, and every year it brings creativity and colour.
Italian Giulia Losca is transforming her boat with a gentle blue and deep red design.
She says the festival is a great experience where she can work with others to create something very, very special.
There are 42 artists here, representing 18 different countries.
Painters from Portugal work alongside those from Macedonia.
Jommana Nemry is from Jordan and has drawn plants and flowers on her boat - with the figure of a woman nestled amid the design.
Drawing on boats is a new experience for me. We are used to a flat surface but now I have to paint on a different shaped surface, not an easy task but enjoyable and challenging, she says.
Festival organisers say they want to spread a message of peace with the event.
It's not just boats that are touched by the colourful creativity - the walls of buildings in this town are also decorated by the artists.
Burullus is located in Kafr el-Sheikh governorate.

إدكو: من غير موافقتنا، بريتش بتروليوم مبنية على ورق Idku: No BP gas project without our consent
The oil companies have polluted Idku and the Mediterranean Sea for years, destroying people's lives. Then BP came along and wanted to make it even worse. But the people of Idku had had enough, and said No More - we're not going to let you build here. Without our consent, your gas plant only exists on paper.
BP's oil deals are returning Egypt to an era of oil colonialism. Egypt already benefited less from its oil than any other country in the region. Then BP renegotiated its contract, taking all control over the oil project away from the state, guaranteeing greater profits for the company and reduced revenues to the government. Mubarak signed the weakened contract. But today the Brotherhood is continuing this neocolonial process, handing over control of Egypt's public resources to private companies.
Idku: an Egyptian town beat the odds & stopped BP
European oil companies have polluted Idku and the Mediterranean Sea for years, destroying people's livelihoods. Then BP came along and wanted to build a new gas plant on the Egyptian coast.
Both the Brotherhood and the military continued this process, handing over control of Egypt's public resources to private European companies, without recognising the social and environmental destruction these fossil fuels projects would cause.
This video explores how European governments, institutions and companies engaged with Egyptian elites while excluding the Idku communities from the decision-making process, and how the people of Idku nonetheless managed to intervene to defend their livelihoods and environment. Now BP are trying to build the same gas plant further east, near the village of Burg Mighazil.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
Alexandria ( or ; Egyptian Arabic: إسكندريه Eskendereyya; Arabic: الإسكندرية al-ʾIskandariyya; Coptic: ⲁⲗⲉⲝⲁⲛⲇⲣⲓⲁ Alexandria or ⲣⲁⲕⲟϯ Rakote) is the second-largest city in Egypt and a major economic centre, extending about 32 km (20 mi) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the north central part of the country. Its low elevation on the Nile delta makes it highly vulnerable to rising sea levels. Alexandria is an important industrial center because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez. Alexandria is also a popular tourist destination.
Alexandria was founded around a small, ancient Egyptian town c. 332 BC by Alexander the Great, king of Macedon and leader of the Greek League of Corinth, during his conquest of the Achaemenid Empire. Alexandria became an important center of Hellenistic civilization and remained the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and Roman and Byzantine Egypt for almost 1,000 years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in AD 641, when a new capital was founded at Fustat (later absorbed into Cairo). Hellenistic Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its Great Library (the largest in the ancient world; now replaced by a modern one); and the Necropolis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Alexandria was at one time the second most powerful city of the ancient Mediterranean region, after Rome. Ongoing maritime archaeology in the harbor of Alexandria, which began in 1994, is revealing details of Alexandria both before the arrival of Alexander, when a city named Rhacotis existed there, and during the Ptolemaic dynasty.
From the late 18th century, Alexandria became a major center of the international shipping industry and one of the most important trading centers in the world, both because it profited from the easy overland connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and the lucrative trade in Egyptian cotton.
