China Heritage: Overseas Chinese Towns - Tai Shan & Kai Ping
Visit the UNESCO-listed Kai Ping Diao dou (開平碉樓) and the beautiful spots like Mei's Grand Courtyard (梅家大院) in the historic towns in Taishan (台山) in Southern China!
Many people in the once-underprivileged region were sold to foreign country, particularly America, for gold rush. They later brought back their wealth to their hometown and converted them into gorgeous western-influenced towns that remain until today even though they appear to be partly abandoned since 1940s. Towns like Tai Shan and Kai Ping has the finest surviving examples of western-influenced pre-war Chinese tenement, which was once common in Hong Kong.

Mastering Calligraphy in Suzhou, China
If you haven't heard of Suzhou, you need to this. This is the artistic center of China and it has been that way for 2500 years. The traditional culture of China is still so alive and vibrant in this lovely, well preserved ancient city, which has famous gardens, impressive IM Pei Suzhou Museum and of course, many master craftsman still practicing the arts of their forefathers.
I visited the city to learn more about the traditional culture from the skilled locals of Suzhou themselves. In this episode, I learn more about calligraphy from a master calligrapher and even get to try it out myself. Suzhou was famous with calligraphy, with one of the most well known art schools, the Wu School, being based right here many centuries ago.
We set up in a teahouse in the stunning Garden of Cultivation and stroke by stroke, I attempt to understand more about this art that was considered one of the highest arts in China.

With 86% of total retail sales generated from cities, rapid urbanisation continues to stimulate consumption, says Billy Wong, Principal Economist, Greater China, HKTDC. He says stylish, middle class mainland consumers are driving sales, with many influenced by Hong Kong trends.

During summer 2011, I traveled in China. I decided to call it 1 month, 7000 km, 10 different places in China! This video was recorded in Wutaishan, Xi'an and Chengdu (五台山，西安，成都). I tried to capture typical Chinese way of life. It was my first backpacker journey.
