The Austrians built Karlovac from scratch in 1579 in order to strengthen their southern defenses against Ottoman encroachments. It was founded as a six-pointed star fortress built on the Zrinski estate near the old town of Dubovac Castle. The original star shape can still be seen around the town. The forces of the Ottoman Empire laid siege to Karlovac seven times, the last time in 1672, but failed to ever occupy it.
Hostel Na putu Karlovac is inside of a row of historical buildings built for noblemen and merchants. It lays opposite of the Karlovac Star and was built after it had become a royal free town. Being the oldest residential district in Karlovac, this area has always been the center for cultural events.

Plitvice Lakes National Park (Croatian: Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera, colloquial Plitvice, pronounced [plîtʋitse]) is one of the oldest national parks in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia. In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register.
The national park was founded in 1949 and is situated in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The important north-south road connection, which passes through the national park area, connects the Croatian inland with the Adriatic coastal region.
The protected area extends over 296.85 square kilometres (73,350 acres). About 90% of this area is part of Lika-Senj County, while the remaining 10% is part of Karlovac County.
Each year, more than 1 million visitors are recorded. Entrance is subject to variable charges, up to 180 kuna or around €24 per adult in peak season.

What to do and see in Croatia: Rastoke
A visit to Rastoke, a place alternative to Plitvice lakes and not very far from Zagreb. Definitely worth a visit and you can use it as a rest point on your way to the Adriatic sea.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia.
In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register.
The national park was founded in 1949 and is situated in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The important north-south road connection, which passes through the national park area, connects the Croatian inland with the Adriatic coastal region.
The protected area extends over 296.85 square kilometres.
About 90% of this area is part of Lika-Senj County, while the remaining 10% is part of Karlovac County.
The Plitvice Lakes national park is heavily forested, mainly with beech, spruce, and fir trees, and features a mixture of Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation.
It has a notably wide variety of plant communities, due to its range of microclimates, differing soils and varying levels of altitude.
Scientists have so far listed 1,267 different plants out of 109 species that can be found within the area of the national park.
A great number of these plants and species is protected by law.
Within the national park area 55 different species of orchids can be found.
Rare fauna such as the European brown bear, wolf, eagle, owl, lynx, wild cat, and capercaillie can be found there, along with many more common species.
The area of the national park is home to an extremely wide variety of animal and bird species.
The rich fauna of the Plitvice Lakes can be summed up as follows:
As a whole, there exist about 50 species of mammals.
At the moment, scientists have discovered 321 different kinds of butterflies.
Furthermore, 12 amphibian species, as well as some species of reptiles have been ascertained.
As regards bird species, 157 species have been counted, of which 70 have been recorded as breeding there.
The Plitvice Lakes are also home to many kinds of bats.
