Dungloe County Donegal

The bustling town of Dungloe is the capital of The Rosses area of West Donegal. The area is bounded in the south by the Gweebarra River and by the Gweedore River to the north. The eastern boundary is defined by the Derryveagh Mountains, where Glenveagh National Park and Mount Errigal are located. The landscape of the Rosses area is rugged and is studded with a myriad of lakes and inlets of the sea. It includes the towns and townlands of Dungloe, Kincasslagh, Doochary, Loughanure Lettermacaward, Ranafast and Annagry, and the inhabited island of Arranmore Island. Other small islands are Inisfree, Iniscaoragh and Owey Island. Cruit Island is linked to the rest of the region by bridge and it boasts a challenging and vey scenic nine-hole golf course

Dungloe hosts a number of festivals and other organised events throughout the year catering for almost every taste. These include the internationally renowned Mary Form Dungloe Festival which takes place each summer. During this 10-day event visitors to Dungloe are treated to a fantastic programme of music, song, dance and street entertainment. There is also a festival dedicated to the local writer Peadar O'Donnell each autumn. Nearby Burtonport has an 8 day summer festival in July each year catering for all age groups.

One of the main reasons why people come to the Dungloe area is its reputation as a great place for fishing. This is due in no small part to the work of the Rosses Angling Association. With over 130 lakes, the area is renowned for both lake and river fishing. It is also a good base for sea angling with several charter boats based in nearby Burtonport

This fabulous and totally unspoilt beach runs along the Rosapenna Golf Club. It faces out onto Sheephaven Bay and is an ideal venue for a bracing walk. For those who prefer their beaches a little quieter there are numerous beaches dotted along the length of the renowned Atlantic Drive

The holiday home is an ideal base for the keen golfer. The Rosapenna Golf Resort is 2km from the front door. It features two superb natural links courses -- Sandy Hills and the Old Tom Morris Course. There is also a driving range and pitch and putt course. The top class Portsalon links course is 22km away via the Mulroy Bridge and Dunfanaghy Golf Club is a similar distance to the west.

There are plenty of opportunities for ramblers and hill walkers in this beautiful part of Donegal -- coastal walks around the spectacular Rosguill Peninsula, woodland walks in the enchanting Ards Forest Park near Cresslough and hill walking in the North Donegal Highlands. Carrick Cottage is tastefully furnished and decorated throughout. There is a cosy living room to the front of the house with an open fireplace( turf supplied. Double french doors lead to a bright modern kitchen and dining area. To the side of the house there is a lovely sun room with a full furniture suite and a second dining area. Three of the four spacious bedrooms are ensuite and there is also a large bathroom with bath and separate shower. There are relaxing sofas on the spacious ground floor hallway and on the first floor landing.
Carrick Cottage is ideally situated to take advantage of the many amenities in the Derrybeg, Bunbeg and general Gweedore area. Just 1.5km from the front door, along a quite laneway, is the fabulous Port Arthur Strand- a beautiful and totally unspoilt beach that looks out towards Gola Island. This is just one of several fine beaches on the stretch of coastline -- a coastline that also features a number of quaint harbours. To the south is the wonderful Magheraclogher Strand in Bunbeg, just a 5 minute drive from the holiday home.
Derrybeg is a popular destination for water based activities. Selkie Sailing is a local outfit that that offers tuition and practical guidance for sailing, kayaking, boat handling and watersports in general. Fishing is available on the Clady and Crolly Rivers and at nearby Loughanure (14km). The newly expanded Dunlewey Centre has activities for all the family and is just over 15km away. Not to be missed is a trip to Glenveagh National Park in the heart of the Donegal Highlands (25km). Indoor leisure facilites are available at the nearby Ostan Gweedore Hotel and at An Chuirt Hotel overlooking the Clady River (8km)
