How to get from Budapest to Ukraine through the Chop border crossing

This is the main reason I am writing this travelpod. I have friends who are traveling to Ukraine through this route and I needed photos and a guide to explain how to do this route in great detail. I have been this way a few times now and it is one of the easiest ways into this part of Ukraine. There are also 2 crossings near Uzhgorod from Slovakia, but 1 is walking only and out of the way. The other is by vehicle only, and I can tell you that after waiting 3 hours to hitch over (most cars are full or they don't want the hassle) that Chop is the easier crossing.

The route is Ferihegy 2 Airport. Taxi to Ferihegy 1, Walk 8 minutes to Ferihegy Train Stop, Take an Intercity Train north to the Nyiregyhaza Train Station, switch to a regional train to Zahony which is on the border. Take the border crossing Zahony train to Chop, Ukraine. (You can also taxi over the border, if you have to). For the schedules try here.

Budapest Ferihegy 2 Airport.
Budapest Ferihegy airport is not too big not too small ... a just right airport. You cant get lost (well not unless you try really really hard) or feel like you just completed a marathon making it from one terminal to another.

They have terminal 2a and 2b but they are connected and 50 meters apart so don't let it worry you.So you arrive in 2b and proceed to passport control the photos I have will match exactly. It was an easy through for me, then check the sign for which carousel you need to collect your baggage. The wait will be quick as your plane and the now unloaded baggage are all quite close. Unless that is, your baggage decided to make an unscheduled stopover and spend some time alone in Paris (mine did... I'm sorry... was it something I said?). In which case you will be standing there wondering with a small group of other increasingly perplexed travelers (baggage likes to go AWOL in groups).

In which case just walk across the hall to the lost baggage counter and register your anxiety and concern, and then thank you foresight for always having a change of underwear and clothes in your cabin bag (no... what where u thinking). Don't necessarily believe the time the trying to be helpful staff say, just check later when the next flight from Paris (or wherever you baggage was last seen) and odds are it will be there. Do remember to get Hungarian currency from the ATM/auto-bank inside the terminal. This is not a eurozone country.

If you arrive late then I can recommend the Hotel Ferihegy nearby (5 min by taxi). It is not expensive, clean and tidy, English speaking staff and good wi-fi in the rooms. By the way, you cant really walk out of Ferihegy Airport, it is quite isolated which is why you need taxi or a shuttle to get around.

But, the good thing is that the Hungarian authorities have realized that rapacious taxi thieves are a major turn off for guests, so we have an excellent service from the Airport. Outside the exit is the Zona taxi kiosk. Their English might not be much (any why should it) but all you have to do is say where you want to go. They will print out a chit/voucher which gives the cost of the trip before you get into the first taxi in the line. If you want to go to a hotel try the info/shuttle office inside the terminal as their English is better. The drivers always seem a bit grumpy, but that is probably because they were hoping for the more lucrative trip into the center.

Ferihegy 1 Terminal
The taxi to Ferihegy 1 takes about 5-10 minutes depending on traffic. This was the original airport and doesn't take much traffic now. You will be dropped off directly outside. Enter through the main entrance and look to your right for the information office. They sell train tickets here as well. You want a ticket to Zahony. This will be intercity (many very fast trains each day) which takes 2:42 hours to get to Nyiregyhaza, you then have a transfer to Zahony on the border (about one hour ...
