In 2003, the local government in Kamikatsu, Japan decided to require that all residents comply with a new, rigorous recycling program - perhaps the most rigorous in the world.
Since then, the town composts, recycles, or reuses 80% of its garbage. It may not technically be 100% zero waste, as the remaining 20% goes into the landfill, but it's a remarkable achievement for an entire community, in such a short amount of time. The impacts have been positive - cutting costs for the community drastically, as well as improving the conditions of the lush and beautiful environment that surrounds the town in Southeast Japan.
Residents must wash and sort virtually anything that is non-compostable in their household before bringing it to the recycling sorting center. Shampoo bottles, caps, cans, razors, styrofoam meat trays, water bottles...the list goes on and on (literally) into 34 categories. At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer.
All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors.
And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items.
At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea, says resident, Hatsue Katayama. If you get used to it, it becomes normal.
Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste.

Ringing of the bell at Chion-in temple in Kyoto on New years. It is rung 108 times for around 2 hours on new years eve. Unfortunately, the bass sound of the bell is too a low frequency for the camera microphone and the bell's deep tone & resonation is not so clear in this video.

The Iya Valley (Iya Keikoku) region in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan is a scenic area known for its dramatic mountain valleys and old vine bridges. The Iya Valley and the inner parts of Shikoku have historically been remote and difficult to enter, making them a favorite retreat for refugees and defeated Heike warriors although access has improved in recent years.
Mount Tsurugi ( Tsurugisan) is a 1955 meters high mountain that stretcha out the eastern end of the remote Iya Valley. Mount Tsurugi is the highest mountain in Tokushima prefecture and the second tallest one on Shikoku Island. It is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains and a center of Shugendo, a Japanese folk religion based on mountain worship.
Mount Tsurugi is a popular hiking is popular as hiking destination and, despites its name which means Sword Mountain, is not difficult climb.
A comforting chairlift brings visitors to a station near the summit while looking down (up) picturesque scenery. From there it takes about 30 minutes to hike the most direct route to the peak, although there is an another route via Otsurugi Shrine which takes just a few minutes longer. At the top you will find a shrine, mountain huts, weather towers, and wooden boardwalks designed for those people who enjoy hiking that lead to various viewpoints with panoramic views out over the surrounding mountains.
More enthusiastic hikers can climb the entire mountain from the trailhead at Mi no Koshi near the lower chairlift station. The hike crosses the chairlift at one point and takes about two hours one way.
Hours: 9:00 to 16:45 (8:00 to 17:45 during summer holidays)
Closed: Late November to early April
Admission:1030 yen (one way), 1860 yen (round trip)

1A rental car is recommended for visiting Mount Tsurugi.
Rental car stores are available around Oboke and Awa Ikeda Stations.
A rental car is recommended, particularly for visiting the less traveled Oku Iya area. Note: The roads are very narrow and have frequent blind curves, which make driving both hazardous and slow.
2. Via Bus
From Awa Ikeda Station to Kubo (2 hours, 1790 yen, 4 buses/day), transfer to another bus bound for Mi no Koshi and get off at the final bus stop (50 minutes, 1350 yen, 2 buses/day) near the lower chairlift station.
Buses from Kubo to Mount Tsurugi operate only on weekends and holidays from late April to November.

Here, spring water from the outer mountains of Mt. Aso trickles out of Kikuchi Suigen and forms the Kikuchi River and the Koshi River, both of which flow through the city.
This pure water nourishes the earth, which allows farmers here to produce a wide variety of crops.
But there is more to Kikuchi than just natural beauty.
The city was known as a vibrant and busting castle town from the Heian period through to the Muromachi period.
Even today, the city offers glimpses of medieval history and culture through its numerous historic sites, temples and shrines.
With its vast natural environment and rich history, Kikuchi truly is an idyllic garden city.

Сегодня большинство исторических достопримечательностей Нары находится в центральном Нара Парке. Не забудьте на станции взять карту парка. Никаких денег с вас за это не возьмут.
Благодаря древним храмам и гуляющим по городу оленям в Наре царит совершенно особая атмосфера. Нара принципиально отличается от остальных своей способностью умиротворить, успокоить. Хочется часами стоять и созерцать разноцветных рыбок в искусственно созданном водоеме, созерцать богатое убранство храмов, смотреть на Эма таблички с желаниями. (Ema) дословно означает рисунок лошади или нарисованная лошадь, это небольшие дощечки из дерева светлых пород, на которых посетители храмов записывают свои прошения или молитвы. После заполнения эма оставляют в святилище для того, чтобы боги-ками получили обращённые к ним послания. Доходы от продажи табличек идут на поддержание храма в должном виде. Если желаемое осуществляется, принято возвращаться в храм для того, чтобы отблагодарить ками. В некоторых святилищах, посещаемых туристами, можно увидеть эма, заполненные на разных языках.
Кто-то попросил успеха на экзаменах, а тут прошение о финансовом благополучии, поступлении в Стенфорд и долгую жизнь.
А это Бинзуру. По преданию он был одним из 16 архатов - учеников Будды. Cчитается, что он был мастером оккультизма. Японцы верят в то, что если, например, у человека больна правая рука, то нужно потереть правую руку Бинзуру, а затем свою правую руку и недуг уйдет прочь.

Рецепт японского мороженого:

350 мл жирных сливок (не менее 33%)
350 мл молока (жирность от 3,5%)
1 яйцо + 2 желтка
180 г мелкого сахара
1 ст. л. чая матча
3 ст. ложки кипящей воды
ПОШАГОВЫЙ РЕЦЕПТ ПРИГОТОВЛЕНИЯ
Шаг 1
Молоко со сливками довести почти до кипения в сотейнике с толстым дном, но не кипятить.
Шаг 2
Пока нагревается молочная смесь, взбить яйцо, желтки и сахар.
Шаг 3
В чашке растворить матча в 3 ст. ложках очень горячей воды. Чайную смесь влить в сливки, хорошенько перемешать.
Шаг 4
Тонкой струйкой вылить почти кипящее молоко со сливками в яичную смесь, постоянно взбивая на высокой скорости. Перелить обратно в сотейник с толстым дном и готовить на маленьком огне до тех пор, пока ложка не будет обволакиваться кремом. Если провести пальцем по обратной стороне ложки, то останется четкий след.
Шаг 5
Перелить содержимое в миску и поставить ее в ледяную баню (вода-лед 1:1). периодически помешивая, чтобы предотвратить образование пленочки. Когда остынет, закрыть пленкой и убрать в холодильник на час, а потом перелить в мороженицу и готовить согласно инструкции. Или убрать контейнер в морозилку и мешать каждые полчаса-час до готовности.
