Ierapetra is a laid-back seafront town and the commercial centre of southeastern Crete’s substantial greenhouse-based agribusiness. Hot and dusty in summer, it offers a low-key, authentic Cretan experience and is also the jumping-off point to the semitropical Gaïdouronisi Island (also called Hrysi).
The city's grey-sand beaches are backed by tavernas and cafes where the nightlife is busy in summer. Though little is left, Ierapetra has an impressive history with interludes as a Roman port and as a Venetian stronghold, as attested to by the harbour fortress. The narrow alleyways of the Turkish quarter recall its Ottoman period.

MIRTOS ON SOUTHEASTERN CRETE IS A SMALL-SCALED PLACE
Coming to Mirtos on holiday means you'll be staying in an attractive and hospitable village by the sea. Everything wihtin easy reach and all very Cretan.
The local people like holiday visitors coming, but they just carry on doing there own thing. This makes Mirtos unique.
There are no noisy discos, but you will hear Greek music being played here and there, in bars and restaurants. Mirtos has about ten restaurants, two supermarkets, a butcher's and a bakery.
In the last couple of years a few new shops have appeared wich sell things from different countries, for example, pottery, lanterns, lamps and rugs.
MIRTOS IS HEALTHY
Mirtos has, thanks to the protection of the Dikti Mountains, a fully subtropical climate. Dry, warm and totally clean air!
For a lot of people with muscle or joint diseases, this means that their stay in Mirtos will improve their condition quite a bit (rheumatism sufferers, for example ).
The particular light of Southeast Crete is very benificial. Good for people who suffer from depression.
MIRTOS IS ACTIVE

I Ierapetra känner man sig inte som en turist – utan mer som en välkommen besökare som bjuds in för att delta i det grekiska vardagslivet bland marknader, myllrande gränder och små caféer. Vill du utforska den mer okända östra delen av Kreta är Ierapetra den perfekta basen.
Många stränder att välja på
Stränderna i och runt Ierapetra är välkända för sitt klara, turkosskimrande vatten, och de flesta har fått EU:s Blå Flagg för rent vatten. Tillsammans utgör de hela fem mil av kusten! Nästan alla stränder täcks av finkornig, mörk sand med mindre inslag av sten. De tre citystränderna ligger på rad efter varandra. Mest välbesökt är Västra stranden med sitt gnistrande vatten, den ligger bara ett stenkast från citykärnans caféer och tavernor.
Long Beach vid byn Koutsounari, en halv mil från Ierapetra, är som namnet antyder en lång, härlig sandstrand med relativt grunt vatten, bara för att nämna någon av alla de stränder du snabbt når med bil eller buss. Det finns möjlighet till dykning och olika vattensporter på de flesta stränderna.
Bekvämt för barnfamiljer
Mitt på vackra Long Beach hittar du Apollo Mondo Family-hotellet Almyra Hotel & Village. Här erbjuds bland annat barnklubb, simskola, träningspass och restauranger med välsmakande menyer. Hela familjen bor bekvämt med All Inclusive och vid det stora poolområdet finns en barnpool med vattenrutschkanor.
Cityliv och sevärdheter
Stadens främsta landmärke är den vackra, venetianska borgen Kale som ligger bredvid hamnen, där fiskarnas färgglada båtar guppar ikapp under solen. Ovanför fiskehamnen ligger Kato Mera, den gamla stadsdelen med smala, vindlande gränder. Här hittar du också en moské och det hus där Napoleon lär ha övernattat på väg mot Egypten.
Både i centrum och längs den trevliga strandpromenaden finns gott om både tavernor och så kallade ”kafenion” – traditionella caféer där du utöver kaffe också kan beställa in goda mezes och ett glas raki. Varje lördag kan du köpa närodlade grönsaker och frukt, ost, honung, korvar, tyger och kläder på stadens gatumarknad.
Paradisön Chrissi Island
Missa inte en båtutflykt ut till Chrissi Island, eller Ön, som den kallas rätt och slätt av stadens invånare. Den obebodda ön, som en gång i tiden var ett piratnäste, ligger 45 minuters båtfärd bort från Ierapetra. Här väntar gyllene sand, tusentals rosa snäckskal och ett kristallklart hav – kantat av doftande cederträd. Glöm inte att ta med snorkeln, här finns nämligen en imponerande variation av marina arter också.
Himmelska höjder
Finns det något mer rofyllt än att vandra i bergen! Ierapetra är en bra utgångspunkt för natursköna vandringar till charmiga byar och utkiksplatser. Då och då bryts tystnaden av getternas bräkande, och det är svårt att inte bländas av kraften och skönheten i den kretensiska naturen.
Några vandringsmål att ta sikte på är Milonasravinen med sitt bildsköna vattenfall, ca 7 kilometer öster om Ierapetra, och den blombeströdda Ha-ravinen i norr, där du kan få syn på både örnar och gamar som svävar högt i det blå. I de små bergsbyarna är det gudagott att slå sig ner på en taverna, inandas den rena bergsluften och njuta av framdukade pilaffer och pajer.

Das Bergdorf Argiroupolis und seine Wasserfälle liegen nur wenige Autominuten von der Nordküste Kretas entfernt, auf einer kleinen Anhöhe und im hügeligen Hinterland. Im Zentrum des traditionellen Dorfes befindet sich die Kirche, neben der sich direkt eine historische Ausgrabungsstätte aus längst vergangenen Zeiten anschließt. Denn der Ort steht auf den Fundamenten der antiken Stadt Lapa. Gerade deshalb lohnt sich auch ein Spaziergang durch das traditionelle Dorf. Direkt gegenüber der Kirche liegt ein Shop, der ein hervorragendes Olivenöl, natürlich selbstgemacht, und sehr guten Honig vertreibt. Dort erhalten Besucher im Griechenland Urlaub auch eine kleine Skizze des Ortes, auf der sind all die historischen Bauten und Sehenswürdigkeiten eingezeichnet und warten auf ihre Entdeckung.
Doch nicht nur das Bergdorf Argiroupolis ist einen Besuch wert, auch die bekannten Wasserfälle, die sich nur einen gemütlichen Fußmarsch von dem Ort entfernt befinden, begeistern Gäste aus Nah und Fern. Die Hafenstadt Rethymno wird mit dem glasklaren Trinkwasser aus den Bergen gespeist. Die mächtigen Wasserfälle werden hier, unweit des Bergdörfchens Argiroupolis, gefasst und weitergeleitet. So ergibt sich ein faszinierendes Wasserspiel, einzigartig auf Kreta und in Griechenland. Zahlreiche Tavernen laden direkt unter den Wasserfällen zu feinen Speisen und frischem Fisch ein.
