Roskilde Cathedral, in the city of Roskilde on the island of Zealand in eastern Denmark, is a cathedral of the Lutheran Church of Denmark.
Roskilde Cathedral is a large brick-built aisled Gothic-style basilica, with twin spires and a semi-circular gallery within.
Placed on a small hilltop overlooking the Roskilde Fjord the Cathedral is a very significant landmark.
Around it, in its setting, the structure of the medieval town is still visible, within which, some medieval buildings and a number of fine 17th and 18th century houses remain.
Built about 1170, the original Cathedral structure was in Romanesque form but, when half-built, the plan was changed under the influence of the incoming Gothic style from France.
In the following centuries, chapels, porches, and other structures were added, each in the current architectural style of the time.
As a result, the Cathedral has emerged as an epitome of the history of European architecture in a single structure.
As with many early structures, the bricks in the external walls vary in size and colour.
The interior walls were originally left bare, apart from the vault and arch soffits, which were plastered.
The entire interior was subsequently coated with a greyish-yellow coloured smooth stucco, and most of the rich original wall paintings have disappeared.
Until the 20th century, it was Zealand's only cathedral.
Its twin spires dominate the skyline of the town.
The cathedral has been the main burial site for Danish monarchs since the 15th century.
As such, it has been significantly extended and altered over the centuries to accommodate a considerable number of burial chapels.
Following the Danish Reformation in 1536, the bishop's residence was moved to Copenhagen while the title was changed to Bishop of Zealand.
Coronations normally took place in Copenhagen's Church of Our Lady or in the chapel of Frederiksborg Palace.
The cathedral is a major tourist attraction, bringing in over 125,000 visitors annually.
Since 1995, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A working church, it also hosts concerts throughout the year.

Entry Title: Short Study Tour: Egeskov Slot
Entry:
First off, Egeskov Castle isn't nearly as cool as the other castles I've been too. It's pretty but it's not nearly as big and half of the castle is closed off to visitors. Why? Because people still LIVE there. Isn't that weird? In fact, on our tour we had to move out of the way as some baby sitter or someone came past us carrying a baby back into the house. Some earl or duke...or someone important and royal...lives here. Deciding that the property just takes too much upkeep, they turned it into the biggest tourist attraction on the island of Funen. Now, I can't quite decide whether he's using the tour money to simply upkeep the castle or to buy himself fancy antique cars and build stupid **** everywhere. Anyways, back to the tour. The first room you enter is the hunting room. This is where the dukes dear old dad hung up all the skins and heads of dead endangered animals that he killed for enjoyment in Africa. It was apparently quite the thing to do at the time. As an extra added touch to the room, he also mounted dozens of knives, swords, and other fun weapons all around the dead animals. He also still holds the record for killing a gazelle with the biggest horns...most likely because doing that now is illegal. You also get to see this creepy doll that's hanging out in the attic. The tour guide tried to convince us of the whole creepy old haunted castle thing. If you move the doll, the whole castle would fall down. Sounds like an awesome prank to me. Outside the castle is where the duke got REALLY carried away. There's lots of gardens (mostly original) but then there's a giant hedge maze. AND a huge playground. AND tree top walking...because every duke needs to walk through the tree tops. He also has a museum filled with antique ford cars and vintage metal signs for Firestone and Goodyear. This is also where you can find the gift shop with cheesy castle t-shirts, shot glasses, and the duke himself on a postcard in front of his castle, dressed in his very own knight's armor that was specially fitted for him. There were even other attractions that I must have missed, including the simulated tomb/coffin of dracula, designed to scare the **** out of all the little children. So what do you think? Is the duke really going broke? Also, it's by far one of the most expensive (and disappointing) tourist attractions in all of Denmark at $30. Remember, you only get to see half the castle. It's almost as much of a rip off as Tivoli accept that Tivoli is actually much more fun.
