St. John's, Newfoundland - Canada HD Travel Channel
Newfoundland is the easternmost province of Canada and for millennia settlement area for various ethnic groups. The earliest known settlers were maritime archaic Indians, approx. 8000 years ago. Around the year 1000 Leif Eriksson and his Vikings arrived. They were probably the first Europeans who settled in North America. In 1978 the reconstructed settlement in L'Anse-aux-Meadows at the northern tip of Newfoundland was declared as World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Above the harbor entrance on Signal Hill is the Cabot Tower. The signal which you remember here is the first transatlantic radio message from Europe received by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901.
Heavy gun batteries show the high importance of this place in times of war.
The colorful facades of the houses are a trademark of St. John's. They are nestled in the picturesque slopes and shape the image of the city. Men run shirtless through the area. The temperature is at -4°F, which is seen as summer for the cold-resistant Newfoundlander.
In the spring gets lost sometimes an iceberg from Greenland here. In recent years, but have grown less.
The heavy icebreakers of the coastal preservation stand out in the port. Sometimes in spring icebergs goes astray from Greenland here. However in the last few years they became less.
In addition, St. John's is port of call for the supply ships of the oil platforms off the coast of Newfoundland. Next to fishing boats older boats are moored, for example, a paddle steamer which is used for tourists now.
