Lahemaa National Park, Estonia - Old Soviet Facilities and Beautiful Bog Walk!
Complete visit of Lahemaa National Park in Estonia - A tour with 5 main stops:
- The 1st stop is in a place called Nõmmaveski, following the river to the remains of a small power plant built in the 1930's, to supply power to a paper factory that eventually burnt down in the 1950's.
- The 2nd stop is at the Sagadi Manor, a 18th century manor that has belonged to various German families. It is today one of the best preserved and most visited manors of Estonia.
- The 3rd stop is at the village of Käsmu, after lunch you can see an old concret slab with various footprints. It used to be a training ground for Soviet border guards, and one of their first teachings was to learn how to recognize different footprints.
- The 4th stop is an abandonned demagnetizing submarine base in Hara Bay - More explanations in the video. A fascinating place to visit!
- The 5thand last stop is the number one attraction in Lahemaa National Park, the Viru Bog! This relatively small bog can be easily visited with a boardwalk and offers really nice scenery, particularly as you get closer to the small lakes inside the bog.

1. Majakivi-Pikanõmme trail (7 km circle )
UPDATE on public transportation! Unfortunately I made a mistake when marking that the trail is accessible with a bus. It's not, the bus times are very spare and not suitable for reaching the trail in normal hiking hours.

Lahemaa National Park, Estonia
Lahemaa National Park is a park located on Northern Estonia, 70 kilometers east from capital Tallinn. The Gulf of Finland is to the North of the Park and the Tallinn-Narva highway (E20) is to the South. Its area covers 725 km² (including 250.9 km² of sea). It was the first area to be designated a national park of the former Soviet Union. Given its size it is the largest park in Estonia and one of Europe's biggest national parks. Its charter calls for the preservation, research and promotion of North-Estonian landscapes, ecosystems, biodiversity and national heritage. The name Lahemaa originates from the most thoroughly studied and visited part of the North-Estonian coast, where four large peninsulas (Juminda, Pärispea, Käsmu and Vergi) are separated from each other by four bays (Kolga, Hara, Eru and Käsmu.) Lahemaa translates roughly as Land of Bays. The national park, established in 1971, is one of the main tourism drawcards in Estonia. Several Companies offer day tour packages from Tallinn, while many people drive themselves. With forests covering more than 70 per cent of Lahemaa, the area is rich in flora and fauna. The landscape has many raised bogs, including the 7,000-year-old Laukasoo Reserve. The park, marked by several trails, teems with wildlife, including a population of wolves, bear and lynx. There are four manors situated in the national park, Palmse manor, the picturesque Vihula manor, Kolga manor, and the baroque Sagadi Manor, Estonia’s most visited manor which together with the other three comprise one of the most unique group of manors in the country.

The 3 best multi-day hikes in North-Estonia in my opinion are:
1. The Kõrve Trail (also known as the first sections of the Oandu-Ikla trail). 78km / 48 miles one way. The first section passes thru one of the most beautiful national parks in Estonia –the Lahemaa National Park. Also there are some sections that are closed off for cars for super nice and remote trekking.
2. Aegviidu-Aravete trail (a section from the Peraküla-Ähijärve trail). 67km / 41 miles one way. The section passes thru 2 of my favourite bogs, the Kakerdaja bog and the Seli bog (on the Simisalu-Matsimäe trail). Some parts are a bit of dirt car-roads but other sections are amazing forest and wild nature experiences!
Transportation update: The buss from Aravete to Tallinn does not seem to go as often as I remembered it. It's like really rare now. A wiser way would be to take a bus to Tapa and then take a train to Tallinn from there. Use Google maps directions option with public transportation, it tells you the options pretty accurately.
3. Nõva Recreational Area. 64km /40 miles out and back. Combine two smaller trails with the first part of the Pearküla-Ähijärve trail for some picturesque pine forests and white sandy beaches. Also do not miss the „moving river delta“!
Transportation update: there are some busses going to Nõva, but you have to change buses and walk few kilometers to the trail head. Use Google Maps directions with public transportation option, it shows the possibilities very well!
BONUS TRAIL/AREA! One of the most rugged nature area in Estonia – the Northern Shore of Lake Peipus Recreation Area. The newest long-distance hiking trail that starts from Ida-Virumaa and definitely is worth checking out! Unfortunately the English materials are not available yet (as of October 2018).
