Cycling Vietnam (The North) - Sapa to Lai Chau, Mu Cang Chai & Yenbai, ending Hanoi
After crossing over from China, I took a bus from the Vietnamese border town of Lao Cai up to the hilltown of Sapa. After around 24 hours or pretty unexciting weather there (with almost no views of Fansipan - Vietnam's highest mountain), I started cycling.
Day 1: Lao Cai to Sapa (bus).
Day 2: Sapa to Lai Chau
Day 3: Lai Chau (waiting out bad weather)
Day 4: Lai Chau to Than Uyen, taking the southerly route to Tam Duong at the start so that I didn't double up on the route from Tam Duong I'd taken on the day coming from Sapa.
Day 5: Than Uyen to Mu Cang Chai.
Day 6: Mu Cang Chai to Nghia Lo
Day 7: Nghia Lo to Yen Bai
Day 8: Yen Bai to Hanoi (by bus)

Legendary O Quy Ho pass in Vietnam’s northwest
O Quy Ho is one of the 4 most daunting passes in Vietnam’s northwestern region. The other three are Ma Pi Leng in Ha Giang province, Khau Pha in Yen Bai, and Pha Din between Son La and Dien Bien province. The beauty and magnificence of O Quy Ho pass inspires adventure lovers.
The 50-km long O Quy Ho pass, also known as Hoang Lien Son or May (Cloud) pass runs through the Hoang Lien Son range connecting Lai Chau and Lao Cai province. The pass is associated with a legend about the Love waterfall, where a fairy and a lumberjack named O Quy Ho met and fell in love.
Because they could not get married, the fairy turned into a bird and flying over the mountain, called out his name “O Quy Ho”. The pass is also called “Cloud” pass because it is obscured by clouds the year round. Vu Truong Giang of Sa Pa township says that from the pass, visitors can admire the imposing panorama of Fansipan mountain, the highest mountain in Indochina: “O Quy Ho pass, called the Sa Pa heaven’s gate, is the highest point of Vietnam’s roads, 2,000 meters above sea level. At the top of the pass, you can see Lai Chau’s beautiful valleys below. When it is sunny in Lai Chau, the passes of Lao Cai province are often shrouded in clouds.”
The climate on either side of O Quy Ho pass, in Lai Chau and Lao Cai province, is often very different during the year. When it’s warm and sunny in Lai Chau, it’s cold and cloudy in Lao Cai and vice versa.
Ms Hong Anh of the Sao Viet Travel Company says: “We organize tours of O Quy Ho pass to explore a number of scenic spots there like Thac Bac (Silver) waterfall, one of Lao Cai’s 10 most beautiful waterfalls. The road over O Quy Ho pass has been upgraded making the trip easier for tourists. At 2,000 m above sea level, you can see an ocean of clouds.”
As one of the most difficult and winding passes in Vietnam’s northwestern mountains, O Quy Ho inspires a lot of adventure tourists. Minh Trang is a visitor from Hanoi: “I have crossed O Quy Ho pass by motorbike twice, once in the daytime and once under a full moon. I had two very different experiences. Under the full moon, the view from the pass was extremely beautiful and romantic.”
O Quy Ho is one of the most attractive destinations in northwestern Vietnam. Blessed by nature, its beauty offers tourists a majestic landscape.

Lai Chau province in Vietnam’s northwest is famous not only for its scenic spots but also for its cuisine.
Farming and livestock production are the main jobs of the Lai Chau people. Their daily meals involve home-grown vegetables and domestic animals.
The small indigenous pig, 10 to 15 kg, is a local specialty. The pig is so small that the locals can carry it with their arms to the market. That’s why they call them “carried-under-arm” pigs.
The pigs eat only tree leaves and roots so the pork is delicious and lean. Steamed-pork, grilled-pork, and smoked-pork are typical food.
Nguyen Thanh Trung is a Lai Chau local: “Smoked-pork is a traditional dish of the mountain region. It is made only in winter because in other seasons, it’s not easy to dry pork.
Pork are cut into pieces and marinated with salt, chilies, and nuts for several days. After that, the pork is dried on the hangers in the kitchen until its fat comes out.”
Local markets are also popular destinations for visitors to Lai Chau, where they can sample purple sticky rice.
To make this dish, the locals soak rice for 2 to 3 days and then dye it with a local leaf called “Khau cam” to give the rice that distinctive purple color. The rice is cooked in a wooden steamer over charcoal and then is served with pork, grilled fish, and cinnamon grilled pork paste.
Grilled freshwater fish is also a popular dish in Lai Chau. Fish is marinated with local nuts called “mac khen”, herbs, lotus seeds, chilies and green grasses and then fixed to bamboo sticks before being grilled over charcoal.
In the villages of the Thai in Lai Chau, visitors are invited to sample bamboo shoot and bauhinia flower salads. Local people prefer to make salad from bitter bamboo shoots.
They soak the bamboo shoots for 30 minutes and then boil them twice. Bauhinia flowers, a typical flower of Vietnam’s northwest, are also used to make the salad.
Fresh flowers are selected and mixed with grilled fish, boiled bamboo shoots and sauce made of lemon juice, garlic, chilies, and herbs. Nguyen Phuong Anh is a tourist from Hanoi: “The salad is eye-catching with white and purple bauhinia flowers. It has a special taste with the combination of grilled fish, buttery bauhinia flowers, bitter bamboo shoots, and sweet-sour sauce. I really like it.”
Lai Chau also offers tourists other unique food made of moss. Moss soup, and grilled fried moss are often served at wedding parties.
Corn wine, known as Mong Ke wine, is indispensable with the meals of Lai Chau people. The wine is made of corn fermented with leaves and millets and cooked with water of the Sung Phai stream.
After distilling, the wine is shared into small jars and kept underground for 2 years which gives the wine a natural taste.
After exploring the magnificent landscape of Lai Chau, sampling local food will ensure visitors an unforgettable experience
