The Karoo of South Africa

This video is about the Karoo of South Africa. The Karoo is a vast semi-arid region of central and southern South Africa, roughly twice the size of France. It covers 45% of South Africa itself and was traditionally exploited by low-intensity sheep farming. Today, expansive game reserves are returning some of the land to its pre-European condition and stocking it with indigenous wildlife. The Karoo is a tough landscape with hardy rural communities pitted against the harsh conditions of the near-desert environment. The geology of the Karoo is famous for its expansive, flat-lying outcrops of Permian and Early Triassic sediments. These rocks are host to some of the world's best fossil reptiles representing the early evolution of land animals.

Paarl in the Cape Winelands

In a sunny and fertile valley in the Cape Winelands lies Paarl, one of the oldest towns of South Africa. The name Paarl means Pearl - after the round granite boulders west of town. At a certain light, they shimmer like pearls.

Paarl is the centre of the Cape Wine industry, boasting numerous wine estates of world fame - like Nederburg, Graham Back or Laborie, which can look back on 300 years of wine making history.

Paarl played an important role in the development of Afrikaans as an autonomous language. As such it was proclaimed by the Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners in 1875. The Taal Museum in Main Street provides detailed information on the topic. And the Afrikaanse Taalmonument high above the town is also worth a visit.

Rhino poaching is a huge issue, so I went along to Aqulia Reserve 2hrs from Cape Town to check it out. The wildlife was amazing and the safari tour was incredible. There are so many things to do in cape town and Aquila is one of the top places to stay in Cape Town.

This is a definite weekend thing to do in Cape Town but the more important issue is the rhino poaching. Rhino horn is sold to the east for tons of cash and used as medicine. Please help stop Rhino poaching by donating to #savetherhino.

I took the Shosholoza Meyl train from Johannesburg to Cape Town solo. It took 31 hours. The good news is that was only a 5-hour delay.
