Backpacking to Laurel Gap Shelter

Beech Gap trail is a real Son of Beech, but once at the top it's not so bad getting to Laurel Gap Shelter. The shelter is one of the nicest shelters in the Smokies IMO.

A couple of us dropped our pack here on the bear cables and slack packed up to Balsam Mountain Trail to the AT where we stopped for a break at Tri-Corner Knob shelter for water and snacks.
Once back at Laurel Gap shelter we meet up with Bill cooked dinner and fellowshipped with glasses of wine until bed time.
The next day we all had our breakfast and packed up and headed out for Gunter Fork Trail. This is a trail that has been labeled as the most dangerous trail in the Smokies. There were very few views. the trail maintenance group had been clearing back the limbs and undergrowth so thank you!!!
I had no idea that there was even a cascades or even a waterfall on this trail. so that was a pleasant surprise. I believe the brown books says that there are 7 water crossings. i may have counted some that wasn't really a creek that the book counted. the very last crossing is Big Creek. This is where Lisa decided to jump in head first into this small pool of deeper water. after that refreshing moment we continued on down the trail passing Mouse Creek Falls and Midnight Hole. This is where Lisa and I stopped off for a jump into the cold refreshing cold waters of Big Creek.

The State Of West Virginia, USA - Unravel Travel TV

The scenic rural state of West Virginia with its abundance of natural resources provides a perfect backdrop for a true American adventure holiday. West Virginia boasts seven wonders of the natural world, from beaches, waterfalls, high plains plateau to river and mountain trails, rock formations and gorges. There are several lake beaches offering swimming and boating in lush green settings. The 2,700-acre Summersville Lake and 1,500-acre Sutton Lake are great for mountain biking and hiking trails. Walkers can follow the Gentle Trail at Blackwater Falls State Park for a great view of the state's largest waterfall at 63-feet and one of its most photographed spots. Named for its amber-coloured water, the falls spill into the Blackwater Canyon and great for hiking and biking.

The New River Gorge is the perfect landscape for rafting, rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking along one of the world's oldest and scenic white water rivers. The second-tallest bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge is close by. A visit here can be elevated by taking a walk on this 876-foot-highNew River Gorge Bridge catwalk for stunning views of the gorge from one of the top ten steel structures in the world.

Dolly Sods is a 4,000-foot high plains plateau in the Monongahela National Forest. Here blueberries and huckleberries can be picked and where mountain laurel and other flora bloom. Hike or ride horses along the trails near West Virginia's highest point, Spruce Knob. From its observation tower at 4,863feet, there are great views.

Walk the moderate Seneca Rocks Trail up to the summit for amazing scenery atop the 900foot rock formation overlooking the confluence of Seneca Creek and the North Fork South Branch Potomac River. The Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area offers world-class climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Or for a more relaxed pass-time, there's fishing for bass or trout at one of the state's many fishing hot spots: Williams River, Cranberry River, Cherry River, Cheat River, Birch River and Beech Fork Lake.

West Virginia is convenient to reach from Washington Dulles Airport, being just over one hour's drive to its eastern panhandle where Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located, the heart of civil war history in this state, when back in1863, West Virginia became the 35th State in the Union, the only state born out of the Civil War and today celebrates its culture, beauty and independence.

What three words would you use to describe the charming town of Weaverville, NC? A local business manager gives her answer.

Three words that come to mind. One of them is “Mayberry”, because it’s sort of like that small town feel, kids and young people, old people walking down the street. There’s like holiday parades and candlelight strolls, and it just feels really cute. I think “eclectic” too, just because there are the old timers who have been here a long time. This area is attracting new people all the time, and so it’s really sort of becoming a little melting pot of lots of great, wonderful people of all walks of life—artists, professionals, families, it’s really kind of everyone.

Then maybe just like, not one word but like, small little mountain town—super cute. Main Street has this very small town feel. It’s not very big. There’s tons of great restaurants and cafes and bakeries, little small town florists, cool art galleries, Mangum Pottery is here on Main Street. It's wonderful to walk around Lake Louise, play with the kids in the park, so there’s tons of fun things to do.

Not only do you have the small, quaint, beautiful little Main Street in small town of Weaverville, but then you have the whole surrounding areas. Reems Creek, for example, which is a great farming community, the Blue Ridge Parkway is just minutes away, there’s lots of beautiful, beautiful really country around here. You can drive 10 minutes away and you can be in the country.

Weaverville is just about 10 minutes north of Asheville, so very, very close to that city kind of feel, two hours from the big city of Charlotte. Then if you’re heading sort of north, Madison County is right there, Hot Springs Spa, all these beautiful little mountain oases with lots of really, really rural areas and beautiful countryside and farms. It definitely is a little slice of paradise in the mountains, that’s for sure.

Upstairs, the large open loft includes a comfortable washed denim sofa with chaise sectional, a lounger and ottoman, window reading nook, antique card/puzzle table, and 40 HDTV with DVD player as well as a sleeping nook with two additional extended-length twin beds. A third bedroom with a King bed and full bathroom are off the loft.

The lower level large mudroom allows direct entry from the ground level, and leads into the recreation room where you can enjoy the regulation newly restored pool table and 48 HDTV. This level also includes a set of bunk beds as well as a half bath with laundry, and access to the single-car garage.

Besides offering many great features indoors, Mountain Laurel Lodge offers outdoor experiences too! Step out onto the lower deck and soak away your cares in the brand new 4-person hot tub or relax in the large hammock, both overlooking the year-round mountain views. Or, enjoy roasting marshmallows at the fire pit just beyond the drive. Rustic laurel benches add to the ambience! Also, early risers, be sure to experience the beautiful sunrise over Willow Valley while rocking on the main level covered deck, or relax in the porch swing with a good book. Don't forget to enjoy outdoor dining and the large gas grill.
