Belmont Shore: Your Own Little Resort
Belmont Shore, Long Beach, CA 90803
Charming, relaxed, stylish and quaint...these are all perfect descriptions for the unique community of Belmont Shore. Bordered on three sides by water, Belmont Shore was originally called Belmont Shore Place in the early 1900s, became Belmont Shore in the early 1920s and is now fondly known as The Shore by locals.
Belmont Shore History
Belmont Shore was originally purchased by the Huntington family and was sold to developers McGrath and Selvir in 1921. Two thirds of what was sold was underwater and marshland. Second Street was a canal and had to be filled in, along with all of the area know representing Belmont Shore, Naples, Belmont Park and the Peninsula. This was a huge undertaking. There was 200 million cubic yards of mud dredged from Alamitos Bay. Along with the mud came an interesting assortment of bones, broken dishes, cans and the like. Who knows what treasures you may find if you dig under your home? This area became an overnight sensation, feeding the desires of homeowners who wanted to be close to The Shore and Long Beach's Wonder Beach. At the time of the original sale, the parcels could be purchased for $2,000. The first homes were built in the '20s as two bed room, one bath Spanish style, with very small detached garages. At that time, people didn't have much need for the garages, but the banks required them for financing, anticipating the wave of the future. Today, the neighborhood is a unique blend of architectural designs, including the original Spanish style homes built in the 1920s and '30s, charming beach bungalows, as well as individualized custom homes.
Quaint & Charming
Change was a constant between the late 1920s and 1990s, but Belmont Shore has managed to maintain its quaint charm even today. The fire station on Second Street is among the many historic landmarks in Belmont Shore. The brick structure opened in 1929 and was the first building of its kind to house two fire platoons and a police substation, representing the expansion of city services to the Belmont Shore neighborhood.
Belmont Pier
The Belmont Pier is another landmark. It was originally constructed of wood in 1910 and called the Devil's Gate Pier by most. After more than 50 years of wear and tear, a new concrete pier was constructed beside the old pier, and stands today as the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier.
Belmont Shore's Famous Second Street
The Shore is known today for its sandy beaches, calm bay, charming homes, and Second Street, a 15-block long shopping district composed mostly of small scale period revival buildings. It is an eclectic collection of restaurants catering to every palate, specialty shops and interesting boutiques.
Things to Do Everywhere!
There is so much to enjoy right out your front door. Besides the calm waters of Alamitos Bay for fun family swims, the bay offers kayaking, boating and stand-up paddle boarding. One can take a bike ride, or run or walk on the 3-mile bike path downtown towards the Queen Mary, or go for a plunge in the million gallon Belmont Pool, or fish for a day at the Pier, or launch your jet skis from the Granada Avenue launch ramp, or bring your dog to Rosie's Dog Beach. Not to mention water skiing or wakeboarding for an afternoon at Marine Stadium. The best entertainment might be to simply stroll down Second Street, meet friends and neighbors and watch the parade go by!
Belmont Shore Annual Events
A few noteworthy annual events for the whole family hosted by Belmont Shore are: Stroll 'n Savor, a summertime sampling of Second Street Restaurants; the Belmont Car Show, which is the largest one day car show on the West Coast, held in September; the Long Beach Sea Festival, held in August; and the Belmont Shore Christmas Parade in December.
