The Canal du Midi is a 240 kilometres long canal in Southern France.
Originally named the Canal royal en Languedoc and renamed by French revolutionaries to Canal du Midi in 1789, the canal was at the time considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century.
The canal connects the Garonne River to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean and along with the 193 kilometres long Canal de Garonne forms the Canal des Deux Mers, joining the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
The canal runs from the city of Toulouse down to the Étang de Thau near the Mediterranean.
Strictly speaking, Canal du Midi refers to the portion initially constructed from Toulouse to the Mediterranean - the Deux-Mers canal project aimed to link together several sections of navigable waterways to join the Mediterranean and the Atlantic:
first the Canal du Midi, then the Garonne which was more or less navigable between Toulouse and Bordeaux, then the Garonne Lateral Canal built later, and finally the Gironde estuary after Bordeaux.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert authorized the start of work by royal edict in October, 1666, with the aim of developing the wheat trade, under the supervision of Pierre-Paul Riquet, and construction lasted from 1666 to 1681, during the reign of Louis XIV.
The Canal du Midi is one of the oldest canals of Europe still in operation (the prototype being the Briare Canal).
The canal is a long ribbon of water stretching through the landscape and attracts many animal species.
Several species of fish such as bream breed in the canal, and others reproduce in its feeding rivers and spend part of their life in the canal.
The canal is also a very vegetated place. In the beginning Pierre-Paul Riquet planted trees to stabilize the banks of the canal especially where it overlooked the surrounding lands.
In the 18th century the trees planted along the canal become a source of income.
So mulberries were planted for rearing silkworms.
Then, with the end of the silk culture in 1772, the mulberry trees were replaced by the poplar from Italy which was the most productive wood.
The Canal du Midi was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The Canal du Midi
The 300 year old Canal du Midi skirts the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean before meandering inland through ancient villages, Roman fortifications and famed vineyards. This canal is defined by its beauty, lined with plane trees and crossed by pretty arched bridges. The Mediterranean weather and pace of life is relaxed and lulls you into unwinding as you cruise sedately along.
This is the perfect place for cycling or walking along scenic tow paths, or simply watching the scenery pass by as you relax on deck with a cool drink. In the distance you can see the Pyrenees, whereas closer to hand are the vineyards that stretch for thousands of square miles. Enjoy private wine tastings at chateaux en route, locations that vary with your choice of barge.
You will discover a marvellous blend of ancient Gallo-Roman and traditional influences reflected throughout this region of historical importance. Explore this further with your tour guide when you visit the walled city of Carcassonne, the most complete medieval fortified city in existence.
Our Hotel Barges
Our classic Canal du Midi cruise is aboard our pretty 8 passenger vessel Anjodi, which has been cruising the Canal du Midi for more than 25 years. Anjodi has never been more popular since Rick Stein brought her to the attention of the world in his very successful TV series 'French Odyssey'.
Our ultra deluxe Canal du Midi cruise is aboard the 8 passenger Enchanté. This is the only double-decker hotel barge on the Canal du Midi, providing room for large cabins and additional facilities whilst still able to squeeze through the waterway's old locks.
We also offer the 10 passenger Athos for larger groups.

Aigues-Mortes Travel Guide
Travel video about destination Aigues-Mortes in France.
One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. In the 13th century King Louis The Ninth was in search of a suitable location for a harbour on the Mediterranean that would serve both trade and military purposes. The Aigues-Mortes region was far from ideal as it was a swampland on which it was almost impossible to build, however, the orders of the King had to be obeyed! The seventeen hundred metre long town wall consists of ten gates and five defensive towers, a true masterpiece of mediaeval architecture. King Louis The Ninth and his army embarked from Aigues-Mortes to conquer the Holy Land for Christianity and in 1246, two years before the king's crusade to Egypt, the town's inhabitants began to prepare the machinery of war for this great adventure. However, the crusade was unsuccessful, the king having been taken prisoner. Even so, this was not to be his final military expedition and following his liberation and return to France he was encouraged to mount a new crusade in 1270, one which he did not survive. The harbour also suffered a terrible fate: it silted up! Thus the town's inhabitants experienced a difficult period in their history. But thanks to its splendid town wall Aigues-Mortes still manages to capture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

Child trailer on Canal Du Midi is not recommended.
Here a small group of German cyclists who stopped by the store. They used their own bikes and equipment to cycle from Toulouse to Beziers (and probably farther) along the Canal Du Midi. We often get requests for baby trailers to do a multi-day trip along the Canal Du Midi. The towpaths are however not wide enough in many places, plus they are also too bumpy in other places. However, people do not believe us when we tell them a baby trailer is not a good idea. Hence, I decided to ask these people about their experience.
