Moldova, Transnistria and its relationship with Russia
How is the relationship of Moldova and Transnistria with Russia? What happened in Moldova after a change of regime and the cooperation agreement with the EU? Are Moldova and Transnistria depending on Russia and if so, why? A documentary about Moldova, Transnistria and its relationship with Russia.
In this eight-part travel series, the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Moldova seems to stand still. There are still Soviet buildings everywhere. And since the change of regime, the streets have not been serviced. Until 2009, the Communists still had the say. Recently, a pro-European coalition is at the power, signing a cooperation agreement with the EU. Russia was not pleased about it so that no Moldavian wine could be exported anymore. Wine is one of the most important export products in Moldova. Everywhere you go, you can see vineyards.
The two largest wine cellars of the world are in Moldova. In Cricova you can find a tunnel system of 120 kilometers. During the Second World War, Jews were hidden in the wine barrels. Today you can find wine collections that belong to personalities such as Putin, Angela Merkel or John Kerry.
Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. No wonder that many young job seekers are leaving the countryside. The remaining Moldovans have to be satisfied with the money from abroad, even though the pressure from Russia is as big as their dependency. The oil and gas come for example mainly from Russia. Jelle visits the territory of Transnistria, which freed itself from Moldavia after a bloody war in the 1990s and now wants to join Russia.

Rick Steves' The Story of Fascism
In this one-hour special, Rick travels back a century to learn how fascism rose and then fell in Europe — taking millions of people with it. We'll trace fascism's history from its roots in the turbulent aftermath of World War I, when masses of angry people rose up, to the rise of charismatic leaders who manipulated that anger, the totalitarian societies they built, and the brutal measures they used to enforce their ideology. We'll see the horrific consequences: genocide and total war. And we'll be inspired by the stories of those who resisted. Along the way, we'll visit poignant sights throughout Europe relating to fascism, and talk with Europeans whose families lived through those times. Our goal: to learn from the hard lessons of 20th-century Europe, and to recognize that ideology in the 21st century.
Kazakhstan: big country, great leader?
Where exactly is Kazakhstan and who is the leader of this big country? How do people live in Kazakhstan and how does the population live around the nuclear test site Semipalatinsk? How does the leader of Kazakhstan, president Nursultan Nazarbayev, lead the country? A documentary about Kazakhstan, his leader and the still visible legacy of the Soviet Union.
In the ice-cold steppe, where labor camps used to be, lies Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan. The city was built out of nowhere using huge oil and gas reserves found in the Caspian Sea in the 1990s. Where you would expect nomads and yurts are futuristic buildings designed by the famous architect Norman Foster. In the Soviet era, Kazakhstan was a kind of backyard, where hundreds of labor camps were created and where millions of Russian prisoners were found.
Since Kazakhstan has become independent one man is in power, Nursultan Nazarbayev. He is probably longer President than anyone else in the world. All elections are manipulated and an opposition does not exist. Putin is a Democrat if you compare him to Nazarbayev. He governs the country as if it were his property. Parks are named after him, statues of him are everywhere and children born on his birthday receive a gift.
Kazakhstan is as big as Western Europe, but only few people know this big country. Most have heard of the nuclear weapons test site Semipalatinsk, where a total of 468 nuclear bombs were detonated. We visit the test site and meet people that live in that area. The local population is still struggling with health problems. It`s the legacy of a Soviet Union, of which some fear it will return.

Latvia: Is Russia still the enemy?
In Latvia the Soviet era is still visible, although the government tries to let the past be past. How is the relationship between Latvia and Russia nowadays? How is it for people in Latvia to live with a heritage that has become a burden? A documentary about Latvia and its past and new relationship with Russia.
The Baltic states still have a clear memory of the Soviet Union domination. Although Latvia is a NATO country, the fear of the Russians can be felt. Jelle visits a Latvian partisan, who fought the Soviets from the dense forests for years. And we visit the city of Daugavpils, where ninety percent of the people are Russian. How do they see Putin?
In this eight-part travel series the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between the powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Latvia is probably the only country where the SS still gather every year. The veterans of the Latvian Legion fought alongside the Nazi`s in their own SS brigade. On March 16 they celebrate a battle in which they defeated the Red Army. For Latvians Germans are the liberators. Corstius meets veterans and explains why Latvian are still called `fascists` until a real fight on the street rises around this question.
One of the Soviet´s prisons in Latvia is now a museum, which draws thousands of visitors every year. The building has been left as it was. As a tourist you can book a tour and experience life as a prisoner. An Interrogation Russian style is included in the ticket, if you pay extra you can spend even a night in an isolation cell. How is it to experience such a tour and why are people doing it? While Russia is glorifying its Soviet past, Latvia is banishing it or making an attraction of it. In Europe, the Baltic states are the fiercest opponents of Putin´s Russia. Cortsius meets Sandra Kalniete, founder of the Latvian Popular Front, who fought for Latvian independence and became the first Foreign Minister.

Cambodian Genocide - Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge
The photographs of the victims from the Cambodian genocide are what really haunt you.
There's a huge discussion of this topic on my blog,
Here's an entry I wrote about this:
Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge, and Genocide in Cambodia
During their three-year, eight-month, and 21-day rule of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge committed some of the most heinous crimes in modern history:
- The entire population of Cambodia's urban areas was evacuated from their homes and forced to march into rural areas to work the fields.
- Every man, woman, and child was forced into slave labor for 12-15 hours each day.
- An estimated two million people (21% of Cambodia's population) lost their lives. Many of these victims were brutally executed; many more died of starvation, exhaustion, and disease.
That these crimes were committed so recently (1975-1978) makes them all the more sickening. The country's scars are still plainly visible:
- The population is suspiciously youthful (50% is under the age of 15).
- The economy is in shambles. This is partially thanks to the Khmer Rouge's execution of the upper and educated classes. The fact that they destroyed most of the vehicles and machines in the cities can't have helped.
- New human remains turn up around the exhumed mass graves of the Killing Fields of Cheoung Ek on a daily basis. Silent reminders of the tragedy, these bones and teeth are ceremoniously placed into makeshift shrines in tree hollows and cement planters.
It's hard to comprehend the motivations behind an atrocity like the Cambodian genocide. What could have been going through the minds of the Khmer Rouge officers and their leader Pol Pot?
Hey Pol, I've got an idea, man. Let's turn the country upside down and get real primitive. Evacuate all the cities, march everyone out to the country. And then start farming, man! Big time. And if anyone resists, let's execute them. In fact, let's kill a whole lot of people. I'm talking hundreds of thousands. Maybe millions. And do it real cruel-like. Bash their heads against trees, electrocute 'em, drown 'em in vats of cold water...
Fear must have been the prevailing motivator in the regime. How could an officer commit such monstrous crimes against his own countrymen? For fear that something even worse would happen to him.
The Khmer Rouge atrocity seems to follow a time-honored recipe for genocide: the obsessive desire to reach a religious or political ideal coupled with a healthy dose of madness.
Why don't we learn? It seems as if past atrocities of genocide haven't served as a warning, but instead as a blueprint for how to repeat them.
But if history has proven human beings to be intrinsically fallible, it has also proven us to be extraordinarily resilient. Pol Pot cast a heavy shadow over Cambodia, but the people have managed to persevere, begin anew, and find joy in life again.

Yalta was first mentioned in the 12th century as a port and fishing settlement... The Russian Empire annexed Yalta in 1783, along with the rest of Crimea.
In the 19th century, the town became a fashionable resort for the Russian aristocracy and gentry. Leo Tolstoy spent summers there and Anton Chekhov in 1898 bought a house (the White Dacha) here, where he lived till 1902.
In 1889 Tsar Alexander III finished construction of Massandra Palace a short distance to the north of Yalta and Nicholas II built the Livadia Palace south-west of the town in 1911.
During the 20th century Yalta was the principal holiday resort of the Soviet Union. In 1920, Vladimir Lenin issued a decree On the Use of Crimea for the Medical Treatment of the Working People which endorsed the region's transformation from a fairly exclusive resort area into a recreation facility for tired proletarians.
