Travel France - Paris Stop-Over
On this short stay in Paris we decided to concentrate on just a few things:
Seine, Quai du Louvre, Pont Neuf -
The Pont Neuf, ('new bridge) is actually the oldest remaining old bridge across the Seine. Bastions give the bridge a fortified appearance that complimented
adjacent military-style architecture.
Louvre -
Roman antiquities, Italian paintings, German, Dutch & Flemish paintings.
Medieval Louvre exhibition displaying foundations of original palace construction.
(We have to spend a day here each time we visit Paris.)
Conciergie, Palais de Justice -
Located in the Ile de la Cite, the Palais occupies the site of the formal royal palace. The Conciergeries was previously a prison, notable in part for the imprisonment of Marie Antoinette.
Notre Dame -
One of the finest French Gothic cathedrals. Restored, like many other French
monuments by Viollet-le-Duc. Roman Catholic, but like other French churches,
the property is owned by the state.
Construction spanned almost the entire Gothic period, and shows a distinct emphasis
on naturalism, (particularlyin the stained glass), a clear departure from the Romanesque.
Hotel de Ville -
In 1357 Etienne Marcel, provost of the merchants, arranged for the purchase of the maison aux piliers and the site became the effective city hall. In the 16th century,
King Francis I removed the old house of pillars and built a prestigious City Hall.
Sainte-Chapelle -
The Holy Chapel) is a Gothic chapel on the Ile del la Cite
It is perhaps the high point of the full tide of the rayonnante
Period. Largely reconstructed, but windows are 2/3 originals.
Le Marais district -
Marshy area on right bank cleared by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Aristocratic homes were constructed here since the 16th century when Henry IV created the Place Royale, (later to become the Place des Vosges). The district entered a period of decline when the court was moved to Versailles.
The area around the Rue des Rosiers became the Jewish district during the late 19th century, and a target for the Nazis during the French occupation. In 1969 the area became the first protected sector, and a significant transformation/restoration began. Today the neighborhood is home to several hotels (mansions), and fine museums. The architecture is considered to epitomize Parisian aristocratic design.
