China From Above
China is a vast country with a seemingly endless variety of landscapes. From the modern skylines of Shanghai and Hong Kong to the ancient city walls of Xi'an, the former capital of the 'Middle Kingdom'. Imposing rice terraces contrast with stark desert scenery, massive coal factories rub shoulders with newly built cities.
I have been privileged to visit China a number of times in the last decade or so, usually with a photo- and or video camera in hand, trying to capture glimpses of this ever evolving nation. Earlier this year, I took the opportunity to travel across the country for another 3 months, focusing primarily on aerial photography and filming.
This little adventure took me from the Northern 'rust belt provinces' to the beautiful mountain landscapes of national parks like Zhangjiajie (often named as an inspiration for the popular Avatar movie) and Jiuzhaigou. I also visited some cities to gain an aerial perspective of China's urban development, and came across several major infrastructure projects. The rural backwaters in Guangxi province were a personal favorite to explore, with the surreal Dragon's Backbone rice terraces and karst scenery around Guilin.
I edited some of this material into one single clip, trying to show some of the diversity I came across. The drone I traveled around with was the DJI Phantom 4.
You will find footage from the following places in this clip (in no particular order): Zhangjiajie national park, the Yangtze River (Three Gorges), Dunhuang (sand dunes and solar panels), Guazhou (wind turbines), Hebei province (Great Wall of China), Dazhai (Dragon's Backbone rice terraces), Fujian province (Hakka 'tulou' round houses), Pingyao, Changsha (Mao Zedong memorial), Liaoning province (several industrial sites and 'ghost cities'), Guangzhou (Evergrande football stadium), Hong Kong, Shanghai, Jishou (Aizhai bridge), Hainan island, Chongqing, Guilin, Jiuzhaigou national park, Zhengzhou, Linxia (golden domed mosque), Zhangye national park, Macau, Hukou waterfalls, and Shenzhen.
Comments and suggestions are always appreciated, thanks for watching!

Colorful market town located in the mountains south of Lanzhou. Sometimes called the Mecca of China, many consider it a main center of Hui Muslim culture in China.

===================
Numerous mosques (qing zhen si) and Islamic mausoleums (gongbei). Start with Da gongbei (大拱北) of the Qadiriya Brotherhood near the Red Garden (红园), which displays mostly Sinified outlook, than proceed to Bijiachang Gongbei (毕家场拱北) and Huasi gongbei (华寺拱北) of Hufiya and Naqshbandiya Brotherhoods respectively -both are clearly more Arabicised.

Hike up the escarpment of the loess plateau north of town, to the pagoda of Wanshou Guan, a Taoist temple, for the great views of the Daxia River valley in which Linxia City is located.
Buy in Linxia City, China
===================
Bank of China branch exchanges currency.
Throughout town there are vendors that sell the skullcaps of the local Muslim Hui ethnic minority in a variety of styles.
Antique Market, (Along one of the main streets). Has real and fake antiques. The selection there includes locally made bronze teapots, Tibetan metal and leather products, and porcelains. One product that travelers should NOT BUY are the furs. The skins of spotted leopards, an endangered species, appear on open display in the market. Leopard skins and other fur products have been poached in China or in neighboring countries. Asia's wildlife is quickly disappearing as China's appetite for illegal animal products increases. Please do not contribute to this crisis.
Transport
=========
Linxia City is the main transportation center of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture. It is the junction of the prefecture's two main roads. China National Highway 213 (G213) runs from the northeast to the southwest, from Lanzhou via Yongjing County and Dongxiang Autonomous County to Linxia City, and then continue via Linxia County to Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Provincial route 309 (S309) comes from Lintao County in Dingxi City (to the east of Linxia Prefecture), and crosses Guanghe County and Hezheng County on its way to Linxia City; it then continues further west to Jishishan Bonan, Dongxiang and Salar Autonomous County. Because it connects in Lintao County with a Lanzhou-bound expressway, it actually provides a faster way to travel from Linxia City to Lanzhou than G213 does.
Another important route, not yet designated as a national or state highway, allows for an alternative connection between Linxia City and Liujiaxia Town (the county seat of Yongjing County). It goes north from Linxia City, crosses a section of Linxia County and then, using ferry, the Liujiaxia Reservoir, and arrives to Liujiaxia Town from the west.
There are three bus stations in Linxia City.The South Bus Station, situated near the Daxia River bridge over which S309 enters the city from the southeast, is served by for frequent (hourly or half-hourly service) buses to Lanzhou, Xiahe, Hezuo, Kangle, Hezheng. The same South Bust Station and the West Bus Station (located on G213 in the northern part of the city) also have a number of departures every day to major cities throughout Gansu and to Xining in the neighboring Qinghai. The East Bus Station, located on G213 on the northeastern outskirts of the city, is primarily the hub for shuttle buses serving major towns in nearby counties.
There are no railways, airports, or navigable waterways near Linxia City, but the popular Lianhua Tai (莲花台) dock, also known as Lianhua Gudu (莲花古渡, Lianhua Old Ferry), at the Liujiaxia Reservoir in the neighboring Linxia County serves as Linxia City's marine gate of sorts.
The city is served by a local public bus system with 13 routes.
Most Beautiful China: Bingling Temple // This is Western China
This is one of the most beautiful places we've visited in China. Gansu province's Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture is the home to one of the most beautiful natural scenes in China. The Yellow River spreads itself out in the Liujiaxia Reservoir. We caught a boat across the reservoir to the Bingling Temple, where there are 183 caves or grottoes with statues and sculptures carved into them. The sandstone cliffs are an attraction enough, but the walk along the elevated catwalk through a gorge while viewing 1000-year-old artwork, makes this place even more special.
Bingling Temple, or Bǐnglíng Sì (炳靈寺) is remote. It can only be reached during summer and fall when the water levels are high enough to take a boat across the Liujiaxia Reservoir. We took a share van from the bus station in Linxia to Lianhua Tai. It may be difficult to find other people to share with, in which case you might have to pay for the whole van yourself. When you arrive in Lianhua Tai, walk down to the reservoir where the boats are parked. Someone will likely approach you. A private boat will cost around 600 RMB, but if you find people to share with, you can probably get it for a lot cheaper. We shared with one other couple and the cost was 150 RMB each. The boat ride, which is very beautiful, takes about a half hour. You'll be dropped off at Bingling Si where you'll have a few hours to wander around before getting back on the boat and heading back. The cost of Bingling Si is 50 RMB. Overall, it's an expensive day, but one that will surely be a highlight of your vacation.

The mosque of Linxia / La grande mosquée de Linxia (Gansu - China)
(EN) Linxia City is a county-level city in the province of Gansu of the People's Republic of China, and the capital of the multi-ethnic Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture. It is located in the valley of the Daxia River (a right tributary of the Huanghe), 150 km (by road) southwest of the provincial capital Lanzhou.
The population of the entire county-level city of Linxia (which includes both the central city and some rural area) is estimated at 250,000; of which, 58.4% is classified as urban population. According to the prefectural government, 51.4% of Linxia City's population belongs to the Hui nationality, i.e. the Chinese-speaking Muslims. Some members of Linxia Prefecture other minority ethnic groups, such as Dongxiang, Bonan, and Salar, live in the city.
For centuries, Hezhou/Linxia has been one of the main religious, cultural, and commercial centers of China's Muslim community, earning itself the nickname of the little Mecca of China.[2] [3][4] [5][6] In the words of the ethnologist Dru Gladney, Almost every major Islamic movement in China finds its origin among Muslims who came to Linxia disseminating new doctrines after pilgrimage to Middle Eastern Islamic centers.[3] It remains the main center of China's Qadiriyyah[7] and Khufiyya Sufi orders;it was also the home of Ma Mingxin, the founder of the Jahriyya order, although that order's center of gravity has shifted elsewhere since.

Beijing 2018 - family trip to China
The capital of China was the place we stayed the longest at as it offers plenty of sights to visit and traditional culture to absorb. The highlight of those days was definitely the Great Wall which left us wishing that we could come here again in the future.
