14 Tips for visiting Greece!
It's no secret that Greece is often ranked as one of the most beautiful places in the world, so we were excited to finally check it out. After 10 days of island-hopping, I can comfortably say that it easily lived up to the hype. With its natural beauty, ancient archeological sites, and incredible beaches, food, and nightlife, Greece is an easy country to fall in love with.
Taking a slightly unconventional route around the country, we started our trip with a three-day road trip through Albania, before taking a 30-minute ferry to Corfu. From there, we flew to Athens, flew to Santorini, and took a ferry to Mykonos, before flying home. Altogether, we spent 1 night in Athens, 2 in Corfu, 4 in Santorini, and 3 in Mykonos. All of the inter-island travel was super easy and inexpensive, and we highly recommend taking the ferries whenever they are available.
Some of our favorite Greek moments included relaxing at a hammam in Athens (which was highly recommended to us and entirely arranged by our amazing taxi driver), getting lost in Oia and Firostefani on Santorini, experiencing the Mykonos nightlife, and taking in the beautiful sunsets on Corfu.
My advice? Get yourselves to Greece, but make sure to avoid peak season. We heard from all of the locals that Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit the Mediterranean when the water is warm enough to swim, but neither the temperature nor the crowds are too overwhelming. We visited in May, and found it to be perfect.

This Travel Bite comes from “Greek Islands: Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes,” a brand new episode of Rick Steves’ Europe Season 10. Check your local public television station for this new episode or watch it on
The island of Delos was one of the most important places in the ancient Greek world, with temples honoring the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. Delos was important in three different ancient eras for three different purposes: as a religious site, as the treasury of the Athenian League, and as a commercial port.

Château de Fontainebleau France • A Walk through the History of French Chateau
Château de Fontainebleau France. A Walk through the History of French Chateau. During our Upper Loire and Burgundy cruise we visit Château de Fontainebleau. To walk through this palace is to walk through the history of France.
It is the only royal and imperial château to have been continuously inhabited for seven centuries and every French royal family added its own architectural style and features when in residence.
Fontainebleau was once one of the residences of the sovereigns. It was home to almost 30 kings of France through eight centuries between Louis IX and Napoleon III. Starting as a 12th century château, Fontainebleau saw many additions and renovations over the centuries. However, it was during the Renaissance that the palace underwent its most spectacular transformation. Francois I (1494 - 1547) brought together extremely diverse collections of art work and made Fontainebleau an artistic centre attracting people from all across Europe. It is world-renowned for its extraordinary Italian Renaissance art and architecture.

Meet Crossrail's giant tunnelling machines
Crossrail will use eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to construct the new tunnels under London. These huge machines will work 24 hours a day beneath the streets of London, excavating large volumes of ground and erecting the concrete tunnel lining.
Each machine has a rotating cutter head at the front, and a series of trailers behind, housing all the mechanical and electrical equipment required for the excavation of material.
To construct the 42km of tunnel required for Crossrail the tunnel boring machines will undertake ten individual tunnel drives to construct the 6.2m diameter rail tunnels.
Each TBM weighs approximately 1000 tonnes and will be up to 140m in length with an external diameter of 7.1m. This allows for an inside tunnel diameter of 6.2m once the concrete tunnel segments are in place.
Each TBM will be operated by a 'tunnel gang' comprising of around twenty people - twelve people on the TBM itself and eight people working from the rear of the machine to above ground.
