The church of San Isidoro el Real is a church and parish of the city of Oviedo, Principality of Asturias, Spain, located in the Plaza de la Constitución, next to the town hall. The church was part of the foundation of the disappeared college of the Order of the Jesuits of St. Matthias. Founded by order of Magdalena de Ulloa, widow of Luis Méndez Quixada, in 1576 its construction was completed in 1587. The school was demolished in 1873 for the construction of the market of Fontán annexed to the church thus leaving the church as sole witness of the Previous complex. On June 2, 1645, the Archbishop of Granada, who had previously been Bishop of Oviedo, Martín Carrillo Alderete (who is buried in the church), signs the founding document of the College of Saint Matthias. The complex was built during the seventeenth century and between 1646 and 1681 was the time of greatest work. In 1681 the works are concluded being inaugurated the church. The construction works of the church were led by several architects of which the outstanding architect Francisco Menéndez Camina can be highlighted. The church has a single nave with a Latin cross plan and the only outer tower, although the initial project was two. It is a Historical Artistic Monument. Apart from its added value as a cultural interest, one of the movements that push the most is the Confraternity of the Holy Burial and Our Lady of Sorrows, not only with the two processions that are organized, but with the great Number of events that are being held throughout the year.

Trinidad Highlights

Trinidad is a town in the province of Sancti Spíritus, central Cuba. Together with the nearby Valle de los Ingenios, it has been one of UNESCOs World Heritage sites since 1988.

The buildings surrounding the plaza (central square) date from the 18th and 19th centuries when trade in sugar from the nearby Valle de los Ingenios and the slave trade brought great riches to the area. Many of the buildings surrounding the plaza belonged to the wealthy landowners of the city.

When the trade in sugar diminished and the slave trade ended in the mid-19th century, Trinidad became a backwater and little building work occurred until the 1950s. As a result, many of the historic buildings and streets were preserved, especially the grand colonial edifices in the immediate vicinity of the Plaza Mayor. Today, most of the former houses surrounding the square serve to house museums.
