Arbroath or Aberbrothock is a former royal burgh and the largest town in the council area of Angus in Scotland. Arbroath lies on the North Sea coast, around 16 miles ENE of Dundee and 45 miles SSW of Aberdeen.
While there is evidence for settlement of the area now occupied by the town that dates back to the Iron Age, Arbroath's history as a town begins in the High Middle Ages with the founding of Arbroath Abbey in 1178. Arbroath grew considerably during the Industrial Revolution owing to the expansion of firstly the flax and secondly the jute industries and the engineering sector. A new harbour was built in 1839 and by the 20th century, Arbroath had become one of the larger fishing ports in Scotland.
The town is notable as the home of the Declaration of Arbroath, as well as the Arbroath smokie. The town's football team, Arbroath Football Club, hold the world record for the highest number of goals scored in a professional football match. They won 36–0 against Aberdeen Bon Accord in the Scottish Cup in 1885.
Arbroath is located on the North Sea coast in eastern Scotland 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Dundee, within the Angus region. Geologically, Arbroath sits predominantly on Old Red Sandstone. Lower-lying parts of the town were below sea level during and immediately after the last ice age.
Arbroath is located 98 miles (158 km) northeast of Glasgow, 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Aberdeen and 77 miles (124 km) from Edinburgh. The neighbouring villages of St Vigeans, Carmyllie, Friockheim, Colliston and Inverkeilor are considered part of Arbroath for the purposes of council representation, and together with Carnoustie, share the 01241 telephone area code with Arbroath.
Tourism plays some part in the Arbroath economy, with Arbroath Abbey attracting over 14,000 visitors each year. Attractions during the summer months include the Seafront Spectacular, which includes an airshow, and the Seafest which is themed around Arbroath's maritime heritage. There is also a re-enactment of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath
Arbroath is home to Kerr's Miniature Railway, the oldest miniature railway in Scotland, which has been operating since 1935 and which at its height, in 1955, saw 60,000 visitors. The town also features a multimillion-pound Harbour Visitor Centre, located close to the Town Quay.
The A92 road connects Arbroath to Dundee and Fife to the south west, and Stonehaven in the north east. Arbroath has a modest public bus transport system, with the Arbroath Bus Station serving as the town's main terminus.

Montrose is a coastal resort town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. Montrose is situated 38 miles north of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. Montrose is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times.
The skyline of Montrose is dominated by the 220-foot (67 m) steeple of Old and St Andrew's Church, designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1832 and 1834. Montrose is a town with a wealth of architecture, and is a centre for international trade. It is an important commercial port for the thriving oil and gas industry.
Montrose is known for its wide thoroughfare and high street which leads to picturesque closes containing secluded gardens. The town has a view of a 2 mi (3 km) square tidal lagoon, Montrose Basin, which is considered a nature reserve of international importance. Montrose is the largest inland salt water basin in the UK, and an important habitat for the mute swan. Just outside Montrose is the 18th-century House of Dun, designed by the Scottish architect William Adam and built in 1730 for David Erskine, 13th Laird of Dun.
Montrose occupies a position on the North Bank of Montrose Basin at the mouth of the River South Esk on the East Coast of Scotland, The expanse of the town extends to the villages on its fringes; Hillside and Ferryden. It lies close to the hamlets of Lunan and St Cyrus. The rural location ensures that the air quality is good, with low levels of nitrogen dioxide and PM10.
The Montrose Basin is a shallow estuary approximately three miles in diameter. Montrose is situated where the River South Esk meets the North Sea. During the 16th century, local landowners desiring more arable land considered reducing its size, but their plans were never carried out.
The 3-mile-long (4.8 km) sandy Montrose Beach has been awarded a Blue Flag for its eco credentials. The surrounding Traill Pavilion and Seafront Splash! facilities with an arcade, a playground, a café and an ice-cream stall is popular amongst locals and visitors alike. North of the town the River North Esk enters the North Sea across the Montrose Beach .

Black 5 pair 44871 & 45407 on GB III railtour Kinclair viaduct, Pinmore, Ayrshire
On Saturday 10th April 2010, a pair of Black 5 class steam locomotives took the Great Britain III railtour from Glasgow to Stranraer, via Ayr.
This is a view taken from the A714 below Kinclair viaduct ( The locomotives are running Tender first, with 45407 (Paddy's Engine) leading 44871 Northbound about 1 hour late.
This video shows the Black 5 pair approaching the impressive viaduct on a 1/80 uphill gradient with some great sound.

We join GB IV over looking the Forth Bridges and follow it as it heads up the East coast of Scotland and across to Inverness.
There is on the a brief look at the engines at Wick and a variety of locations on the way back down to Inverness, again.
Steam on the Kyle Line and back to Glasgow Central.
The T-bird comes along as we rejoin the GB IV as it races through Penrith.
By public transport we follow GB 2down the line to Bristol.
Many people enjoyed chasing the 'train' so thanks guys for putting on the show. Wedo ride trains as well as chasing.
