Macau Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go
10 things YOU need to know before you go to Macau. A comprehensive travel guide to bring you up to speed on the Language, Food, Casinos, and more! First, some basic knowledge on Macau: Macau was a Colony of Portugal from 1557-1999, and now it’s a Special Administrative Region of China just like Hong Kong. Macau is small -- 30 sq km, or 11 sq miles. 640,000 people live there. In 2017 Macau had 30 million visitors… lots of people for such a tiny place. 64km (40 miles) west of Hong Kong. A great day trip from Hong Kong, but easily worth 2 nights
Macau is best known as a gambling and shopping mecca, but it also has a really neat historic portuguese center
Macau is the only place in China where you can gamble legally. It generates more revenue from gambling than anywhere else on the earth including more than about seven times the revenue generated by “The Strip” in La Vegas

Macau or Macao (/məˈkaʊ/ (About this soundlisten); Chinese: 澳門, Cantonese: [ōu.mǔːn]; Portuguese: Macau), officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the western side of the Pearl River estuary in East Asia. Along with Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and several other major cities in Guangdong, the territory forms a core part of the Pearl River Delta metropolitan region. With a population of 650,900[3] in an area of 30.5 km2 (11.8 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.
Macau was formerly a colony of the Portuguese Empire, after Ming China leased the territory as a trading post in 1557. Originally governing under Chinese authority and sovereignty, Portugal was given perpetual occupation rights for Macau in 1887. Macau remained under Portuguese control until 1999, when it was returned to China. As a special administrative region, Macau maintains a separate political and economic system apart from mainland China.[5] The People's Republic of China's obligation to run Macau as a special administrative region, per the Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau, expires on 20 December 2049.
A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging on a short-term basis. Facilities provided may range from a modest-quality mattress in a small room to large suites with bigger, higher-quality beds, a dresser, a refrigerator and other kitchen facilities, upholstered chairs, a flat screen television, and en-suite bathrooms. Small, lower-priced hotels may offer only the most basic guest services and facilities. Larger, higher-priced hotels may provide additional guest facilities such as a swimming pool, business centre (with computers, printers, and other office equipment), childcare, conference and event facilities, tennis or basketball courts, gymnasium, restaurants, day spa, and social function services. Hotel rooms are usually numbered (or named in some smaller hotels and B&Bs) to allow guests to identify their room. Some boutique, high-end hotels have custom decorated rooms. Some hotels offer meals as part of a room and board arrangement. In the United Kingdom, a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks to all guests within certain stated hours.[citation needed] In Japan, capsule hotels provide a tiny room suitable only for sleeping and shared bathroom facilities.

10 Best Places to Visit in Portugal
The richness of Portugal’s heyday – when it used to rule a huge empire from Brazil to Macau in China – is something you can definitely see in its architecture. Elegant and drenched in opulence, the buildings of Lisbon and Porto – especially in their respective Old Towns – certainly reflect the wealth of Portugal’s imperial days.

5 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Macau
Macau (also sometimes known as Macao, or Àomén in Chinese) is just 60 kilometers west of Hong Kong and was, until 1999, under Portuguese administration. Now a Special Administered Region of China and a popular tourist destination, the city takes its name from the Chinese A Ma Gao, meaning the Bay of A Ma, the Chinese water goddess and patroness of seafarers and fishermen. Blessed with a subtropical climate and a constantly blowing cool sea breeze, this small territory shows its Portuguese influences everywhere - hardly surprising since the area was first settled by traders from Portugal as far back as the 1550s. The city's rich past is seen everywhere, in its fine architecture and well-preserved colonial buildings, and is so important that the Historic Center of Macau has been included in the list of China's most significant World Heritage Sites

Macau Travel Guide - Macao Day Trip from Hong Kong
Come join us for a day trip from Hong Kong (香港) as we visit Macau covering the best things to do in one day in our Macau Travel Guide (澳門 - 澳门).
We started off our day waking up early in Hong Kong to get to the ferry terminal to take a TurboJET ferry to Macao. *Important* remember to take your passport as you're crossing one special administration region in China to another (Hong Kong to Macau) and you'll need to go through immigration on both sides (it doesn't take long).
After arriving we took free transportation (provided by the casinos and hotels) to check out the Venetian Casino and Parisian Hotel. Then we were off to Taipa to mostly eat Macau street food and enjoy the old colonial architecture.
We then made our way to Senado Square, the ruins of St. Paul's and Forte Monte while munching on plenty of Macanese street food before heading back to Hong Kong on a TurboJET ferry.
As you can see you can do a lot in just one day in Macau but a few things we didn't get to do included gambling at casinos, going up Macau Tower or checking out the A-Ma temple. For more of the things we missed out on but are worth considering doing in Macau see our two lists below.

Portuguese Colonial Landmarks Of Macau,
Macau; A Unique Blend of Chinese and Portuguese | Macau Travel Vlog (Day Trip from Hong Kong)
Macau truly does bost a unique blend of Chinese and Portuguese/Mediterranean cultures, influences, foods, and architectures. Although Macau is mainly famous for its Las Vegas-style Casinos and gambling, there's actually loads more to do and explore in Macau. I'm personally not into the whole gambling and Luxury shopping culture, which is why I took advantage of the day trip from Hong Kong to Macau, to adventure the ancestral, historic culture of the city, exploring the old Portuguese Colonial, visiting the Casa do Mandarim and enjoying loads of Pasteis de Nata.

DestinAsian - Portuguese Food in Macao
It's all too easy to skip Portuguese colonial influence in Macao these days as the lights of the island's casino strip become bigger and brighter. But Lisbon's legacy remains entrenched in Macao's streets, from Catholic architecture and influences to cooking. As a seafaring nation and principal spice trader, Portugual is known for cod, cinnamon and the ubiquitous piri-piri chili and black pepper that complement dishes such as squid and sardines. DestinAsian's video team went off in search of three of the island's Portuguese restaurants.
