Comunidad Agua Blanca in Machalilla National Park - and the sulfuric mud that I accidentally tasted.
Montañita - the party town where one afternoon was perfectly sufficient for us old broads.

Yoga: For yoga (and home-baked bread!) in Ayampe, we went to the wonderful Otra Ola
Getting there: From the Oriente, we took a bus to Quito, flew to Guayaquil on Avianca Air ( and then took a bus from Guayaquil via Jipijapa to Puerto Lopez (and returned from Ayampe to Guayaquil by bus from Olón, near Montañita).
Isla de la Plata: For day tours of Isla de la Plata (an island which is part of Machalilla National Park), arrange with any of the tour businesses along the Puerto Lopez malecón. Our tour was part exploring the island and seeing blue footed boobies and part snorkeling, though during whale season the snorkeling is replaced with humpback whale watching! Tours are generally between 30 and 40 USD per person.
Surfing: Though we were not brave enough to try surfing, there are lots of opportunities to learn to surf in Montañita, Ayampe, and Puerto Lopez, and of course, lots of opportunities for experienced surfers to enjoy the waves as well!
Mostly, in conclusion: visit Ayampe!!!

Boobies in Isla de la Plata?
A group of adventurous travelers from Salinas took a trip up the coast of Ecuador to Puerto Lopez back in August 2016. The small fishing town of Puerto Lopez is well known as one of the best whale watching destinations in all of Ecuador, with thousands of humpback whales migrating off the shores of Isla de la Plata. Isla de la Plata is a small island, better know as the Poor mans Galapagos Island, inside of Machalilla National Park. Established in 1979, Machalilla National Park near Puerto Lopéz rests along the Pacific coast. It incorporates beaches, fog forest, dry forest, small islands and two larger islands, Salango and Isla de la Plata, the latter named for a legendary hoard of silver left by Sir Francis Drake. Many exotic bird species can be found on this island including the blue footed boobies with magnificent and picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. The tour operator Piman Travel S.A (PimanTravel.com) took care of all of our travel and whale watching needs for our group. Always very organized which definitely makes our adventure exciting. Thank you Ecuador for giving us an abundance of adventures. Janis and I will continue to travel and document our travels in Ecuador so everyone can come and see your beauty.

Charming guesthouse up on a hill overlooking Machalilla beach. Carlos is a really friendly and helpful host. He goes out of his way to make sure you make the most of your visit and will help you find all the best activities and places to see.
Villa Machalilla is also only a 5-10mins away from the famous Los Frailes beach. If you want to go the long way you can take the scenic trek which takes only 1.5 hours.
We really enjoyed our stay and would have stayed longer!

Episode 16.
We made it Ecuador. We arrived after a long tired and uncomfortable bus journey. We stayed 4 nights in Montañita, well known as party beach town with really good vibes and incredible beach. We stayed also in Puerto Lopez, a really tiny spot on the coast perfect to visit the National Park Machalilla. The most famous Spot of this National Park is Isla de Plata, known as The Poorman Galapagos where we had the chance of seeing a lot of wildlife, the day after we did a trekking around the beaches, including the famous Los Frailes beach.
On these days we spent a budget of 26 euros per day, leaving us with a balance of 2.795 euros left to continue the adventure.

ATERRIZAMOS A ECUADOR!!. Llegamos después de un largo viaje de autobús, cansado e incómodo. Nos alojamos 4 noches en Montañita, conocido como un pequeño pueblo en la costa con mucha actividad nocturna e increíbles playas. También nos quedamos en Puerto López, un lugar realmente pequeño en la costa, perfecto para visitar el Parque Nacional Machalilla. Uno de los puntos más famosos de este Parque Nacional es Isla de Plata, conocido como The Poorman Galápagos donde tuvimos la oportunidad de ver mucha vida salvaje, al día siguiente hicimos un trekking por las playas, incluyendo la famosa playa Los Frailes.
