Madeira: Machico em festa 2016
O município do Machico estava em festa em honra ao Senhor dos Milagres quando por lá passámos.
Consta na Wikipedia que em 1803, um terrível aluvião destruíu a capela, que a destruiu quase totalmente levando o crucifixo da capela para o Oceano Atlântico. O crucifixo acabou por ser recolhido por uma galera americana, quase intacto. Nessa altura a ermida passou a ser dedicada ao Senhor dos Milagres. Em 1862, por ameaçar ruína, a capela foi totalmente destruída. É de novo construída e em 1883 é finalmente inaugurada.
Realiza-se agora anualmente uma festa no mês de Outubro.
Walking in Madeira on an Exodus holiday - 60km in 5 days (September 2017)
This walking holiday (Walking in Madeira by Exodus Travel) started with a night in Hotel Dom Pedro in Machico, the second largest city on the island. There were 5 walks totalling 60 km. Our guide, André took us to a supermarket to buy the lunch for each day. Our first walk explored the rugged eastern extremity of the island starting at Vereda da Pnta de Sao Lourenco. We stopped for lunch at a deserted information post called Casa do Sardinha before a swim in a cove. Our second walk was to Porto da Cruz along Levadas followed by a spectacular track cut into the cliff. We stopped for 2 nights in Santana, famous for small stone houses with steep, triangular-shaped thatched roofs. Our third walk was to the village of Ilha started with a short transfer to the Queimadas natural park where all the unusual plants and trees such as huge heather and lily of the valley. Our 4th walk starts early to see the sunrise at Achada de Teixeia and took us to Madeira's highest mountain Pico Ruivo (1862m). We stayed overnight in a nice hotel in the remove village of Encumeada. Our 5th and last walk took us to the wind farm at Bica da Cana (1620m) and then by bus to the capital Funchal.
