Where should you book your hotel when you visit Oahu? With so many hotel choices on Oahu, I'll help you narrow it down to a neighborhood that suits you best. We'll discuss all the options on Oahu including Waikiki, Ko Olina, Northsore, and the Windward side of Oahu.
Waikiki
Where most of the hotels on Oahu are located. And where most people stay. All the major brands. Oceanfront will be expensive, but you can get some good deals a couple blocks inland.

Ala Moana Hotel -- right next to Ala Moana Mall, and a 5 minute walk to Ala Moana beach. A bargain at $150-260
Kahala
The Kahala Resort On the other side of Diamond Head. Built in 1964 as a Hilton, then a Mandarin Oriental. Set on a semi-private beach. Not next to any other hotels.
Every U.S. president from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush has stayed at the resort. Runs $400-650
Around the airport
3 hotels around the airport… I don’t know why you’d want to stay here unless you are flight crew.
Ko Olina
A fairly new resort area with 4 manmade lagoons on the South West corner. The Disney Aulani hotel put this place on the map. My favorite place to stay. 4 Seasons, and Marriott Vacation Club.
Pros:
Beautiful protected beaches with snorkeling
Well manicured
Golf Course
Relaxing atmosphere
Cons:
Less choice than Waikiki (for everything, hotels, food)
Not much around Ko Olina (Costco, Target, Foodland, Zippys, 10min to Kapolei)
I like the Four Seasons: $600-1000
Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club: $300-700
Makaha
1 Hotel, the Hawaiian Princess -- right on Makaha Beach. Plenty of VRBO and AirBNB at the Makaha Valley Towers a bit inland. About $200/night

North Shore
Hawaii’s most famous surf breaks -- banzai pipeline. Easy going laid back atmosphere. Hawaii without the mega resorts.

Winter brings huge waves
Biggest hotel on the North Shore is the Turtle Bay Resort with 400 rooms. Basically at the Northern tip of Oahu. It has it’s own private beach, 2 golf courses… definitely a relaxing all inclusive kind of place. Basic rooms go for $250-$400+
Round the bend on the east side is the Courtyard by Marriott with 140 rooms. A bit cheaper around $200. The pro of this hotel is the proximity to the Polynesian Cultural Center.
East Side (Known as Windward)
Towns of Kailua, Kaneohe. Not much in the way of hotels out here. Mostly B&B. But really nice, quiet beaches. And only a 30 minute drive in to Waikiki.
If you’re just in Oahu for a short time… 2-3 days… do Waikiki. Easier to get around and most of the major attractions are there.
If you’re on Oahu for a week, I’d suggest splitting your time between Waikiki, and either Ko Olina, or the North Shore.

Oahu is a U.S. island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian island chain and home to the state capital, Honolulu. Highlights of the city include historic Chinatown and the Punchbowl, a crater-turned-cemetery. Waikiki is an iconic beach, dining and nightlife area. West of Honolulu is Pearl Harbor, site of the WWII's 1941 bombing attack and home to the USS Arizona Memorial. Known as “The Gathering Place,” Oahu is home to the largest population of people as well as the best nightlife in Hawaii. The Honolulu craft beer and food scene here is dynamic and always changing. For a taste of the local culture, check out the neighborhoods of Kakaako, Kaimuki, Kapahulu and Chinatown. Waikiki and Ala Moana Center are world-class shopping destinations, while boutiques in beach towns like Kailua captivate with their own charms.
From ancient stone heiau (temples) to 21st-Century high-rises, Oahu is an island of endless contrasts. Geographically only the third largest of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands, it is nonetheless home to nearly three-quarters of the state’s 1.2 million residents — 370,000 of whom are concentrated in urban Honolulu, the ultra-modern, south-coast cityscape kamaʻaina (residents) refer to simply as Town. Like the other islands, islets and shoals that make up the 1,600-mile Hawaiian Island chain, Oahu is believed to be the product of a single “hot spot” in the earth’s mantle. Over the course of millions of years, the earth’s crust drifted to the northwest across this hot spot, giving rise to each island. The bulk of Oahu was created nearly four million years ago, by two now-extinct shield volcanoes — the remains of which are today visible as the Koʻolau and Waiʻanae mountain ranges, running parallel to each other along the length of the island’s eastern and western coasts, respectively. As with the rest of the Hawaiian Islands, these mountain ranges separate the wetter windward shore from the drier leeward side, forcing rain clouds blown in off the ocean to leave their water on the east side of the island before gaining passage to the west.
More recent volcanic activity also created several of Oahu’s most visible landmarks: 761-foot-tall Diamond Head, located on Waikiki’s eastern border, is a “tuff cone,” formed some 100,000 years ago when an eruption of volcanic ash eventually hardened into solid rock. Southeast Oahu’s Koko Head and downtown Honolulu’s Punchbowl (the latter of which houses the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in its crater) are also tuff cones.
Vastly influenced by its reputation as a world-class travel destination, Oahu offers more of everything than the other Islands combined. Shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities here far eclipse those of neighbor islands. And visitor traffic, drawn to the island by its enticing beaches, big winter waves, super-sized collection of scenic golf courses and signature attractions — Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, the Polynesian Cultural Center — continues to exceed any neighbor island.
Still, Oahu’s storied past is very much alive. Hawaii achieved statehood less than 50 years ago, leaving its history as a U.S. territory and before that, a Hawaiian monarchy, very much in evidence. Walking tours of downtown Honolulu, Waikiki or Chinatown, as well as a visit to Pearl Harbor, are a good way to get in touch with the island’s unique past.
Many of Oahu’s most popular attractions are located outside the city. Hanauma Bay, a world-renown snorkeling destination, is a short drive from Waikiki, just past Hawaii Kai. Sea Life Park is not far from Hanauma Bay. The Polynesian Cultural Center, a unique and perennially popular attraction, is located in Laʻie, more than an hour’s drive from Honolulu. Kualoa Ranch, near Kaneohe, Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, near Kapolei, and the Arizona Memorial, the biggest visitor draw in the state, are all outside the city of Honolulu.
Tour operators provide transportation to and from Waikiki, making it easy to see the countryside on your way to adventures like helicopter and glider tours, ultra light and skydiving experiences, kayaking tours, shark excursions, ATV and horseback rides. If you want to take a drive, Haleʻiwa is a good bet. A surfers’ mecca, it has retained the character of its more than 100-year history.

Lanikai Beach is located in Lanikai, a community in the town of Kailua and on the windward coast of Oahu, Hawaii. The name Lanikai means heavenly sea. This small ½ mile strip of beach is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world. Adjacent to Lanikai Beach is a primarily upper-class residential area because of this it is accessible through public beach access paths. Although the beach itself is public property, it is not state land and is not a county beach park like many beaches in Hawaii. There is no public parking lot and the area lacks facilities like restrooms, showers or lifeguards. As of July 1, 2014, parking violation fines have increased from $35 to $200 in an effort to keep people from illegally parking in the residential area surrounding the beach accesses. Parking violations are strictly enforced and include, but are not limited to, no parking within four feet of a driveway entrance or apron, blocking the unimproved pedestrian right of way (where a sidewalk would normally be), within 30 feet of a stop sign, within ten feet of a fire hydrant, or on or within 20 feet of a crosswalk.
During the weekdays, the beach is less crowded compared to the weekends, although it is still very difficult to find parking close to one of the public beach accesses. On weekends, the beach becomes extremely crowded and during vacation seasons such as winter and summer, the beach is almost completely packed every single day. Lanikai is a popular spot for photo shoots as renowned models and photographers frequent the place on nice days. What makes Lanikai Beach popular for photographers is having the two Islands in the background called the Na Mokulua or mokes. Kayakers will often row out to land on the larger northern island, but no one is allowed to land on the southern island as it is a bird sanctuary. Water temperatures are generally 75–80 °F (24–26 °C) so you can spend plenty of time in the water. It has extremely soft powdery clean white sand.
Lanikai Beach is regularly voted as one of the best beaches in America and is the only beach in the USA that was voted as one of the best beaches in the world. Due to its position on the Windward or east side of the island, Lanikai is recognized as being great place to watch the moonrise over the Mokuluas, especially during the full moon. Occasionally during the year the sun will rise directly between the Na Mokulua islands.

Island of Oahu - Hawaii. The most visited and well known touristic destination. However to experience Hawaiian spirit you have to escape the crowds. Coming to Hawaii is definitely a special to me. I could stay 24 hours a day and absorb the scenery. It is never enough. Part of my trip I spend on North Shore to explore less known spots. To capture some beautiful sunrises and visit amazing, tranquil places. Love when it rains. There is always rainbow somewhere. On one day I catch six (6) in a row! My personal record:)
Capturing Supermoon was one of my highlights. Horizon was a little cloudy but moon appeared so large and bright, almost as daylight. This lifetime experience under the palm tree? I call it - spectacular.
There is always not enough time to see it all and capture it but my camera was ON all the time. I explored all sides of the island and number of beaches, waterfalls, beautiful hikes, overlooks, the others village from movie LOST. I feel like this place is so special to me, I wanted to dedicate my whole project to the People of Hawaii, their Land and their Culture as a THANK YOU.
It has been amazing journey from first day on the island to final touch in my project. Of course there is a lot of scenes from South Shore Honolulu - couldn't miss that. Sunsets on Waikiki are one of the best known attractions and visiting Pearl Harbor is a must for everyone. Even the rainbows in the city are magical.
This project took longer then I thought but it was fun to make. I captured over 60K stills in 100 + time lapses. Used Canon 5D MK III with Promote Control, Syrp Genie Mini, Manfrotto tripod. Pictures processed in LR Time Lapse, Lightroom 5 and edited in Sony Movie Studio 13.
